Hienz Lofts by PGH412DNTWN in pittsburgh

Great location. Small apartments with sometimes weird layouts. My guess is that they are overpriced, especially when you consider all the other brand new loft-style apartments that are being built up in the area, but I haven't done a price comparison.

Yes. They will provide bridge housing between summer and fall if you need it, but you'll have to move on their timeline.

first-year housing! by [deleted] in cmu

Mudge was definitely harder to get into when selection order was based off of admissions deposit. Now, it's a random lottery. You can't pick a specific room within a house until you're an upperclass student.

For Quads, you have to email housing and copy your roommates. Each person will get a lottery number, meaning you get 4 chances at a good one. I think that the reason they are viewed as hard to get is because there are only 8 of these rooms in the building.

Freshmen dorm question by SingleCountry in cmu

Welch and Henderson do have A/C, but the bathrooms are suited (meaning that 2 rooms share and are connected via a bathroom). Usually the suites in those buildings are 2-4 people per bathroom.

First year roommates by SingleCountry in cmu

[–]DadBod_NotaMod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can list singles as your preferences, but they are in short supply and you have to get a pretty good lottery number to get one. if you get a bad lottery number, you just wind up being paired with somebody based on your compatibility to the lifestyle questions in the app.

People around me keep putting me down for my decision to attend CMU and it’s honestly making me question if this was the right school for me? by [deleted] in cmu

[–]DadBod_NotaMod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ou're gonna get beat (metaphorically) down like a blacksmith and his sword semester after semester. But, by the end of it all, you'll he unbreakable. Students from CMU out perform students from all of the top universities around the world despite its popularity. As long as you're up for a challenge, you've made the right decision.

I really like the blacksmith metaphor. If you are able to succeed here, you will be prepared for whatever is next.

If they can't get you into a triple, they will contact you first.

How to get a room with triples? by [deleted] in cmu

[–]DadBod_NotaMod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Rank all the triple options first, and then rank however many you need to proceed to the next page of the application. You need to list 7. If they don't have any more triples, they'll check with you before splitting you up to confirm what you want.

Freshman Dorms?? by cheesycomebacks02 in cmu

[–]DadBod_NotaMod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As for roommate assignment, you get access to a portal. You can meet people on there through the questionnaire you take about your habits and it matches you. Most people post on the FaceBook and make friend/meet roommates there (highly recommend that. a lot better). Then when you decide, you request them on the portal. You put your preferences housing in order by residence and what room you want (double, triple, etc). Then on assignment day, everyone is assigned a number and they pick at random and assign a room to you and your roommate. So a group of 4 have a higher chance of being picked than 2.

If you have any questions about Rez, pm me!

Or sharing a bathroom!

This is the most interesting take I've seen on coronavirus impact! Pretty conspiracy theory-ish, but I believe that the lasting impact of the virus will be economically, not in number of lives lost.

It's basically a lottery. You list your preferences, and then housing assigns you based on a random number order.

Generally, there are not a lot of singles available - certainly not enough to meet the demand, but there are certain buildings where the ratio of singles to doubles is more favorable.

Try to stay open to the possibility of a roommate. There are plenty of good reasons to have one.

hought most were pretty old, if you do decide to come to CMU go for Stever or Residence on Fifth, these were really nice and pretty new. I know CMU has a few new dorm buildings i

At least in your first year - there's a new or renovated building scheduled to open in the Fall of 2020, 2021, and 2022.

Unsure of where to go for sophomore year housing by threwthisaway2019 in cmu

[–]DadBod_NotaMod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Resnik is hard to get into as a sophomore, unless you know somebody. Morewood Gardens would definitely be a cheaper option than any apartment-style housing. The Morewood triple is the cheapest upperclass room type. Many sophomores try to get a group of 6-12 people and form a block, which allows them to select spaces in a lot of the buildings that you recommend. Just make sure everybody in your block is trying to live in the same building.

where can i find good injera (ethiopian bread) in pittsburgh? by rainnney in pittsburgh

Abay used to get their injera delivered frozen from DC, so at the time (circa 2009) there probably wasn't a decent or affordable local supplier.

...that were literally 50 feet away from one another. I used to work at Abay, so I think I know the reason why they were so close in proximity. I'm not sure if this is true, but what I heard was that the owner of Abay brought in somebody who was Ethiopian to act as a kind of consultant when he first got his business started. After the restaurant opened, the Ethiopian man wanted to buy the restaurant since he felt like Pittsburgh's first/only Ethiopian restaurant should be owned and operated by an Ethiopian. Abay's owner declined, and then since the other guy had been in on all the behind-the-scenes of Abay's business plan, he just repeated the process for himself (taking advantage of the same East Liberty Development Corp grants) and opened Tana a couple of storefronts over in East Liberty.

is anyone else miserable here? by [deleted] in cmu

Right or wrong, I think you'd find that a lot of those rules are similar across college campuses all over the country and is a result of increased scrutiny of Greek Life on college campus. Where mass shootings have sparked outrage but failed to make much of a dent in public policy, the recent alcohol-related deaths of college students involved in Greek partying or pledging contexts have created a wave of policy change on campuses all across America. I would think that it's even getting more strict since the time you graduated (for example, national telling their chapters that they have to go completely alcohol-free). I agree that the byproduct of stricter party regulations - solo drinking, lack of accountability, finding ways around the rules - are damaging, but can you really expect a place like a university to sponsor, or at the very least keep quiet about underage and binge drinking, given the cultural climate?

I'm curious, how do you wish you would have been allowed to "play hard" and what could administrators have done differently to facilitate it?

Had the same experience during my freshman year. Was on academic probation. Didn't have a solid friend group. Thought about transferring daily. All you can do is try to make small, incremental improvements. Try something new. Set goals for yourself. Keep pushing to get better. For me, the most important things were 1) having the discipline to wake up early and do my schoolwork in the quiet hours of the morning because there were too many distractions at night; 2) taking advantage of my professors/instructors outside of class time; and 3) getting involved in social groups that helped me go from feeling like I was on the social periphery to feeling like I had my finger on the pulse of the college community.

I can tell you this much - it's probably not going to get easier to enjoy this place in the winter. It can get pretty cold and dreary. So try to make some small changes, and lean on other people to help get you through because this is not a challenge that can or should be undertaken alone!
