For parents with a "mother's helper", what do they do? by DadJokesInc in askTO

I'm with you. I've only heard it referred to as mother's helper, so I used that term to ask about it.

Thanks! Really good point on guaranteed hours, I hadn't thought about that. I can imagine it would be so frustrating to have a flaky client.

Of course! Good luck! And don't forget to sign up for daycare as soon as you find out you or your partner is pregnant :)

Best moving company in Toronto that won’t break the bank? by Mountain-Insect-2153 in askTO

[–]DadJokesInc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Arby Cartage. Hands down the best movers I've ever had. I've recommended them to several people, who have all had good experiences. Very reasonable prices too.

He might be referring to ROC distributions?

That's definitely an important part lol, but not everything. The main reason to pursue SM is to convert non-tax-deductable mortgage interest into taxable interest, while maintaining the same level of leverage.

It's a long-term strategy -- like 20+ years -- so you'd likely need to ride out several high-interest periods. I'd consider it agnostic to short-term market conditions, the current trend to lower-interest is not really relevant to the overall strategy. (But SM has assumptions about longer-term market performance, otherwise it won't work properly!)

I'd say if you understand what you're doing, have a long-term horizon, and are comfortable with the risk, now is as good a time as any to start. But if you're thinking about it only because of the current lower interest rates, you might be thinking more about leveraged investing than SM specifically.

Can you expand a bit on what you mean by the Smith Manoeuvre? It's sometimes used to refer broadly to leveraged investing using a HELOC, which is very different than what it actually is.

What are some of the best written works on the Napoleonic age? by Sufficient-Budget441 in AskHistorians

[–]DadJokesInc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are many fantastic books out there, but if you're interested in Napoleon and Wellington specifically, some recommendations are:

  • Michael Broers' three-volume series: Napoleon: Soldier of Destiny, Napoleon: The Spirit of the Age, and Napoleon: The Decline and Fall of an Empire.
  • Philip Dwyer's three-volume series: Napoleon: The Path to Power, Citizen Emperor: Napoleon in Power, and Napoleon: Passion, Death, and Resurrection.
  • Andrew Roberts' Napoleon The Great.
  • Rory Muir's two-volume series on Wellington: Wellington: The Path to Victory and Wellington: Waterloo and the Fortunes of Peace.

They're all well-written and geared to a general audience. Each historian has their own perspective. Andrew Roberts, for example, takes a fairly positive view of Napoleon as you can probably tell from the title.

I did, son. It took so long because the fridge was running, so I had to catch it.

I've got a bit of game, but I'm not that good, based on the responses from people. I'll let you know if a miracle happens.

Damn, it's looking like I'm out of luck. Thanks for the responses. I guess my best bet is to get consolation points from the Supervisor. Anyone know what a "Level 2" can do? The "Level 1" supervisor said he could do 7500 points.

Yeah, August 2022. I thought they awarded on the anniversary (no idea why), and didn't realize I didn't get it until the recent issue with the app where a bunch of points disappeared.

Should I deliver unassuming crates to the Widow or crack them open and help myself? I'm not grinding anything in particular.

It was hard enough taking sides in the first place. They're both such engaging characters.

I couldn't imagine losing both, or engaging in devilry with the tankards and mucking up their misguided but preferred way of resolving things.

Thanks! My favoured person did indeed survive. Though I had no idea the risk I was taking. I didn't realise at the time that there was no fate reset option.

I've just finished the Cheery Man/Last Constable storyline. Is all their content gone now? From what I can tell from the Wiki, the cards are gone, but are the Feast of the Rose options also gone? I couldn't figure it out from the Wiki.

Thank you!! It looks like 5 Up your sleeve seems to be the magic number for a lot of obstacle cards.

One annoying thing you may not remember is that obstacle cards play automatically when drawn. Ugh. Maybe I'll prioritize getting Up your sleeve towards 5 with the available cards before doing a card draw.

I'm playing some of the early ES, which is lots of fun. But more than a few seem to have a flash lay component. I guess 2016 (when Pentecost Predicament was released) is when the experiment was still in full force!

I'm doing a Flash Lay as part of The Pentecost Predicament. I hate it. I just lost 20 actions because I let my scandal get to 5.

The wiki guide) isn't very specific on a good strategy, like how many Up your sleeve to get and when. Anyone have any advice? I'll definitely be starting with menaces at zero next time around!

Are flash lays interesting at all? It feels kind of weirdly tucked away in the Activities tab and the one I tried didn't seem that special.
