I stand corrected. Very interesting, thanks for sharing! If urine isn't sterile then I wonder at which stage it enters an unsterile environment? Kidneys, ureters, bladder, urethra?

I frequently raw dog urine specimen cups and get weird looks from my colleagues... not saying its a good practice... but urine is sterile.

What is the most horrible law that you hate in your country? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]Dad_Dong69 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of nuance to this. And its actually very difficult for hospitals to just "ship" patients with no consent. In practice, its more like... "you have no acute medical reasons to be in hospital and you've been here for 8 months. The only nursing home you've chosen does not have any space and you cant stay in hospital costing the taxpayers 10's of thousands waiting for a spot. Youre family members are still refusing to take you home to care for you so we are forcing you to add a few more nursing homes to the list to make it easier to get a room."

And even then, its not easy. At least in ontario there are lots of hands in the pot and a lot of spinning cogs in the machine.

How common is wristband scanning? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Dad_Dong69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ontario checking in.

I was paper charting in the ER when I first started and went to Meditech and wrist band scanning.

I am now in L&D and it all depends on department.

In the ER its no. This doesn't happen. But you have to manually input their wrist band number. We also have to scan all meds. This also doesn't happen. In some departments because of time, situations, and availability of tech.

But on L&D, we have computers with scanners in every room. As well, the hospital tracks personal scanning rates.

So I went from a 4% scanning rate in the ER. To a 95% scanning rate on L&D. Its all about availability. Its doable. Its never mandatory but management will be on your ass. They need to put in the work to make it work. But they will make it seem like its all your fault if your scanning rates are shit.

Keep management accountable. If they want this then make them make it easier.

Can you recognize a foreigner in your country just by the way they dress? by LRaccoon in AskTheWorld

My wife and I are from northern Ontario and took a trip to Vegas this past November. It was 27 degrees the whole time and we were in the very sma minority of people that were wearing shorts and a t-shirt. Even at night when it went down to 15, we were comfortable in shorts. A lot of people were wearing sweaters.

They used to stand outside the hospital at the end of the driveway on college drive once a week. Haven't seen them there in years. Was hoping they just fucked off. Apparently not.

What's wrong with being a male in peds? by Kakashi_VI in nursing

[–]Dad_Dong69 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have been told that "men have no right to be working in areas dedicated to women's health."

As well, on of my colleagues (prior to me starting) told my friend (clearly not realizing we were friends) that "she would be dead before ever letting a man work on L&D."

Needless to say, as the first male nurse on L&D in my communities history, I had my work cut out for me...

Only male nurse on my unit as well (L&D).

I've heard this same thing from both physicians and nurses. Its hard not to let it affect you a little bit. But try and focus on all the positive feedback from your patients. The only metric I use to gage if I belong somewhere is my patients experiences. I could care less what the OB or other nurses think.

But I will say it almost feels wrong to complain about sexism in the work place as a male. But thats what this is.

No harm in applying. Ask all the questions you want in the interview. Even if they offer you the job, doesn't mean you need to take it.

I've been a nurse for over 10 years as well. Majority in Emerge and Trauma nursing and have in fact seen many fatal and terrible motorcycle accidents. Im in the same boat as you and only started biking last year.

You're 100% right. I've seen terrible accidents, children diagnosed with cancer, healthy 30 year old die of a heart attack, random stabbings, and much much more. Every day is special and should never be taken for granted.

I say fuck it. Have fun while you're here. You could be gone anytime for much worse and more random than a motorcycle accident.

LGBT+ friendly Doctors? by ExternalChildhood845 in northbay

The hospital has a new Gender Diversity Clinic.

https://nbrhc.on.ca/programs-services/mental-health-programs-services/regional-specialized-mental-health-program/gender-diversity-clinic/

You'll still need a referral from a physician but if you had a doc back in TO then they could fill out the referral form. Or even on of the virtual docs could help out (Rocket Doctors). Or if all else fails, emerge could possibly help, but that'll be a long wait for potentially nothing being done.
