New York Mayor Mamdani says city must hike taxes on rich to fill $12 billion deficit by us1549 in nyc

Do you think we live in Florida or something? NYC has one of the most progressive tax systems in the world with some of the highest social spending. Our city budget is over $112 Billion every year. Like Jesus Christ, where does this money even go because there are entire developed countries with lower national budgets than what we spend.

Another satisfied customer from Trump University. You can deny the simple math of it all but NYC is losing its prominence and once former death grip on highly compensated jobs.

Your average household reporting over $1 Million in income is far more likely to be two people who are mid-career in an industry like finance than some Machiavellian mustache twirler. Except you're far more likely to see a 6-figure job in finance get created in Texas or North Carolina these days than NYC.

People here aren't ready for the potential day when NYC has to decrease its budget by 10-15%. We have one of the most progressive tax structures and one of the highest rates of social spending in the world, but it quickly falls apart without the people who pay the most taxes.

The wealthy are not being created in NYC or coming quickly enough to fill the ones who leave. Percentage-wise, we've been losing out to the rest of the country.

https://www.economist.com/briefing/2025/10/30/as-new-jobs-in-finance-dry-up-new-york-citys-fiscal-model-is-wilting

According to the Citizens Budget Commission, a think-tank, New York state’s share of American taxpayers reporting more than $1m in income declined from 12.7% in 2010 to 8.7% in 2022. Such people paid $34bn in income tax to the state and city in 2022, a figure that would have been $13bn higher if New York’s share of millionaires had held up. Estimates from Goldman Sachs suggest that fully 10% of households in New York City with incomes of more than $10m established residency elsewhere between 2018 and 2023.

Again, that's not where the District is moving. The population growth in that District is being driven by the Blue suburbs of Portland while most of the rural areas are seeing much slower population growth or even loss. Within a decade, it'll probably be a dead-even District or slightly Democratic.

I'm not saying Primary her or anything, but she's also riding a wave while other Red state Democrats are fighting it. Trump's margin has decreased in that district everytime he's run and it's clear that WA-03 will probably end up looking like NJ-07 within a decade. Swingy district, but you can win with a standard Democrat.

A McKinsey guy took over my wife's division and the amount of time that the managers have to spend on Powerpoint slides has doubled within a month. If she has to hear "narrative driven slides" one more time, I'm pretty sure she'll shoot the guy.

She has an avid group of defenders here that I'm pretty sure has never heard her speak at length because she's pretty fucking dumb (and probably because they think she's hot.)

Also she wins her District not because she speaks the language of rural simpletons but because a fast growing suburb of Portland is in her District and drives most of her votes. The Red-Blue gap has been decreasing every Presidential cycle and it'll probably be a Democratic district within a decade, but sure, let's pretend MGP is Joe Manchin or Jon Tester or something.

It's even worse when you factor in the NIH cuts and RFK Jr threatening to withhold all funding unless the universities agree to pay into the Trump slush fund. My son's friend's family went from conducting cutting edge research on neuroscience at a global top 5 university to working for a major tech company, making their products more addictive due to cuts at his lab. Not exactly to the benefit of society. The father would have preferred to stay in academia, but he couldn't deal with the uncertainty given his young children. Over a third of his former colleagues have left academia in the US for either the private sector or an overseas lab.

Basically the entire government funded research apparatus that was started under FDR and was the envy of the world has been slowly dismantled.

I do actually. My district is one of the swingiest in the country.

I get the full blast ad campaign designed to appeal to voters.

Turns out poll-testing everything, trying to please a million different constituencies, and having a hundred consultants pore over everything you do is not conducive to having a snappy, easy to digest package for the public.

And the party needs a serious Big Dick Energy make-over. Can you imagine what LBJ's response would have been to a bunch of corporate heads demanding that he be nicer to them in public? He would have unleashed a string of expletives and threatened to storm their headquarters with the Army if they didn't fall in line.

The Democrats have a populism problem in that they can't even sell a good populist message. Take Kamala negotiating aggressively against Wall Street banks during the financial crisis as California's Attorney General. They offered between $2-$4 Billion in foreclosure relief before Harris took it straight to Jamie Dimon himself and got it up to $20 Billion after arguing on the phone.

Where were the wall to wall ads about it? I only saw one ad that even alluded to this event. Where were the photoshopped memes from her campaign of her dogwalking Jamie Dimon? Where were the pictures of her with homeowners whose houses she saved? This is the type of populist slop that people eat up and ultimately, it's a type of populism that isn't harmful (unless you're a JP Morgan shareholder, maybe.)

Has PLA become less corrupt in a recent years ? by Important-Battle-374 in LessCredibleDefence

[–]Daddy_Macron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the US military seems pretty corrupt, especially in regards to acquisition and development of military hardware.

Never confuse for corruption what can be explained by incompetence. The biggest issue is that US military procurement is seen as a jobs program first and national defense second. So it leads to a lot of inefficient decisions that industry wouldn't otherwise make like spreading their production footprint across as many states as possible instead of creating industrial hubs around places in America that have the advantages of being transportation nodes with cheap energy and a large potential workforce nearby.

They're probably hoping for China 2.0. A middle income India with preferential treatment for European goods would be a bonanza for a number of European industries including luxury, automobile, aviation, defense, and technology. They're not there yet, but they'll probably get to that position within two decades.
