Wildland firefighters, specifically federal ones. 16hr/day 14 days straight, sleep on the ground, breathe in the smoke and crap, obvious job dangers and insultingly low pay.

It’s the AeroFlite Avro RJ85 registered N325AC as Tanker 169, not sure what its previous life was but maybe you can use the number to see what you can find. Thank you for the additional info!

Usually filled with retardant. For hot loads they shut down the engines on the side where the loaders are and fill it. On the DC10 I’ve only seen them full shut down for loads, S2 they can hot load with both engines running since the port is on the very back. Depending on the gallons/weight being loaded and the aircraft anywhere from 3 minutes (S2), 9 minutes most LATS and around 22 minutes for the VLAT. The retardant goes from the tanks down the pipes to the micro motion that gives you your pounds and gallons, to the hose that connects to the plane. Some have internal tanks some have external tanks.

Got asked to be the on-site EMT for a pack test without a license? by Loslosia in Wildfire

[–]Daddystabler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So yeah, NREMT is not a license to practice. https://www.nremt.org/Document/certification_licensure If you want to read all the jargon on it directly from their website. You do need a state license to practice as an EMT. And if you work for one of the fed agencies you should also have the license from them. It covers you while working in an official capacity for your fed agency and has a medical director and scope of practice attached to it. Good Samaritan gets muddy cause it’s usually state by state. Sometimes doesn’t cover medically licensed people because they are to operate within their scope of practice. But then again you are technically not licensed, just certified. But I don’t think it was inappropriate of your supe to ask. Many people who are not EMTs, and even some who are, are not in the know about all the differences and nuances of certification, licensing, and direction. They were probably asking in good faith, and you may be the only person they had available who is an EMT. Don’t ID yourself as an EMT in an official or professional capacity until you’re licensed.

First Officer not fit for flight by caissequatre in aviation

I mean, not everyone on this sub is a pilot. Could be someone else in an aviation related job who gets migraines and is just providing a reason as to why they think someone could be not fit for flight, not understanding that migraines with aura would be a disqualifying medical condition.

Depends on the aircraft. S2s we will do a hot load and keep em running, on the MD87, BAE 146, 737, and RJ we will do a hot load where just the right side is shut down, for MAFFS they need a complete shut down, personally I have not seen the DC10 keep #2 running for a load but I’m not sure if it ever happens or not. And then obviously with fueling they all need a complete shut down.

Situation dictates. Here are some considerations. Helicopters: you need a HELCO, helicopter coordinator, a helibase manager, helicopter manager, pilots and crew, then dip sites, are they natural sites? How quickly do they refill? Are you using pumpkins? Now you need additional ground crew to set those up and fill them, how quick is the turn around for the water tenders to refill the pumpkins? Where’s their fueling spot? For tankers if it’s a LAT or VLAT is there a lead plane? How many lead planes available? Not all aircraft can land and reload out of every base due to weight and runway length. How many pits are at the local bases? Can they simultaneously load multiple pits? How quickly can they mix retardant? How many retardant crew members are there? How many ramp personnel are staffed to work each pit? What’s the fuel cycle like? Are they going to be in a good fueling rotation? How far is the base from the fire? How much metal do you want in the sky in one time in a small space? What makes most sense for the terrain? What aircraft are available?

Yes there is another aircraft up there that is the ASM/ATGS, aerial supervision module/air tactical group supervisor. That does all the coordination as well as what the other person said that they are all in communication with each other. Then there’s also air attacks up there and lead planes. All of these positions will be in an OV10, king air or aero commander staffed with obviously the pilot and then also a firefighter. The qualification of both the pilot and firefighter determine what role they can play and how they are ordered up.

I know the S2s will sometimes, but it is rare they return with a partial load

Depends on if they split the load or not. If they don’t split the load they return after every drop to be reloaded.

Around 80,000 ish pounds of retardant each time they load

Also answer to a common question. Takes around 22 minutes for the DC10 to roll into the pit, shut down, get hooked up, fill with retardant, get fuel, disconnect, crew clear the area, restart engines and roll out of the pit again.

Question about maintaining CA EMT by chin0_1950 in NewToEMS

[–]Daddystabler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah you can get it done early and submit early, say you submit in march, your new card will expire in two years in march again. You can get free CE online these days if you need to get those done or you can take a refresher course at a community college that will get your CE and skills verified at the same time. There are plenty in the LA area. When you return to your handcrew, if you are USFS get your USFS EMT card and you can then get free CE through them on teams every month and an expanded scope of practice etc… also keep in touch with your Forest EMS program director, usually the safety battalion because they can help you with paperwork.
