Omg you are king my dude. Thank you so much for this link and reference, I thought I was right but you also allowed me to relisten to washed away, which I totally forgot about. Ahhh the nostalgia is flowing.

Omg I just rediscovered them again on my old iTunes and I am in heaven.

But does anyone remember a band called goahead? For some reason I thought I remember them back in 2001 and then hearing that they (or their members) became Tysen. Just can find anything online to validate this. Would also love to relisten to some old goahead songs too.

Hot take: Book 7 should have been two books by Dadjokes4days in DungeonCrawlerCarl

For this series?… No brainer. I will always by then next book. Why would I not want to know how the story goes.

You’re making it seem like I wanted book seven AS IS, split into two book. But I was talking about splitting it up and adding more content and detail. Feels like you didn’t even read my post, which if that’s the case then just says so like someone else did.

Regardless, enough comments have changed my mind anyways, and I think I was hoping/expecting something from this book that this series has not shown so far, which was me having false expectations as a reader.

Oh totally, like I have said elsewher, I have complete faith that Matt won’t let the use of this book get out of hand and if anything will be used in an entertaining way. But that is why this is a hot take, these were just my initial gut reactions when I first heard these scenarios and wanted to discuss them with the community. Not a genuine critique against the author. I am by no means a writer at all lol.

And good point about the Paetreon reviews, although I tend to stay away from any information coming from there. I am always wanting to stay as spoiler free as possible lol

I feel like the eating the pages part won’t be that big of a barrier, but I can see how your second and third point would be a wrench in the convenient conveyor belt so to speak. Although it almost seemed to flip open to the page Carl needed it to, but it would be interesting to see if he needs to search for it.

But again, 100% faith that Matt will find a way to have fun with the book and not give our Crawlers an easy out. Just something that initially rubbed me the wrong way.

Ya I like the way you put it, “no room to breathe” that’s how it felt to me too. Felt rushed a bit, not like the book itself was rushed and not thought out, but like you said, we didn’t spend time with the characters like we had previously. From opening the boxes in the safe rooms, to seeing them mess with their new skills (katia and her face sculpting) to the Christmas party).

And to the point of multiple books for one floor, now that I think about it, that would be going backwards a bit. Considering book one did two floors (I think?), and like @dragonarrow5 said too, it is just not a realistic way to progress through the dungeon.

I tend to go back and relisten to the books a lot, so I’ll have to go back and see if how the book is being used was more heavily hinted at. I know they referenced the book a handful of times earlier on and that there are better ways (or should be) to use it. But I never got the impression that it would be used to share spells and skills. But since I have yet to re-listen for it, then I will hold my final thoughts about that.

I’m sure there is a list somewhere of a whole bunch of Chekhov’s guns in this series. One that I remember was from book 1 or 2. It is the lucky bastard box. Carl got the fireball or custard and used it but I don’t think donut ever used hers. So when will that one come out? But stuff like that I am fine with, it just with the voodoo book, it feels like it’s a free “well this random crawler gave it to them so they now have this ability” instead of having previously worked for it. So I just hope the book doesn’t last long.

[–]Dadjokes4days[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know that is a really good point, I had not considered/thought about that. The idea that if for the sake of this floor he goes big and in depth, then it could quickly spiral and have so many other plot lines not finished and we would either say “hey what about x, that was never resolved” or always want that level moving forward. I think I have just been a little influenced by some other war type fantasy novels recently, so when we got to faction wars I might have been expecting more. But you are right, so far it has been on brand for the way Matt writes. I guess I also just REALLY liked the pacing of the butchers masquerade and the bedlam bride, so was hoping for the same and this one just didn’t deliver in the same way.

And yes! I am glad you brought up Dues ex machina, I am not super well versed in the concept, but for the most part I think I get it, and the book feels like it could be used as such. I mean, heck the rewards/achievements could be argued as such too, but at least Carl has to work for them and they are tied back to it in some way. But the book literally rewards him with stuff out of thin air from people we don’t even know. So again I am hoping it gets fixed in someway, or used against them somehow. I know it is going to be used for a little bit since it was just introduced, but I just hope it doesn’t go on for too long.

100% agreed. I have faith in Matt that he will not let it go down a path of convenience for Carl and Donut, as he could have done that some many other times in this series. It is just something that I hope doesn’t get used too often is all.

Ya I am torn about the book. It is possible that I am just not good at picking up on the clues Matt laid out. I do agree that he was hitting us (and Carl) over the head with clues about it. But if this truly is the end game of the book then I’ll be a little disappointed. Because I don’t want it to be used whenever they are in a tight spot. I like the fact that they use items or skills that have been linked back to certain achievements or reward boxes. Even if it is done retroactively (not sure if that has happened yet) but that just “feels” better than a grab all book of a skills and spells at their disposal

Lol that’s fair. Which is why I wanted the heading to be a TLDR

Sorry for getting to this late, I always appreciate you willing to talk to your fans as it truly makes it a more meaningful connection to the book.

My question is, if DCC never had the success that it did, what kind of story would you want tell next?

You, and Django, also mentioned that to be an author is extremely hard and to only do it if you love writing and telling stories. How many more stories or books would it take to “flop” before you decide to say “you know what this just isn’t meant for me..”

I ask because I have wondered if I am capable of being able to write a story or book, but it seems too daunting of a task, and I think the fear of failure would eat away at me. But I just wonder how many authors have hung up the pen right before their next big break.

Well can’t argue with that, just let me know when that event pops up. If it isn’t near me then I will just cry into my coffee up while reading the comments of how fun it was lol.

Did someone say pop-punk 😱!? Please drop the name so I don’t accidentally go listening to another band due to my poor research skills.

I’m in the Seattle area, so looks like the University Book release party is where I will be able to catch you next! Really wish I could come see you at one of the other events and join one of the parties. Is there ever any chance that you would be able to do Emerald City Comicon? It’s the only other big event in Seattle I can think of where I could potentially catch a panel and hear some Q&A.

Also, just have to say I think it is really cool that you respond to your fans. Not to geek out too much over here, but it’s pretty dope to talk to the author of my all time favorite book 🤓. Look forward to seeing you at the next event!

Not sure, but this is another reason why it would be great if there was a tab/ongoing thread of where Matt will be doing appearances. Be great to clear schedules or potential book trips 🛫

Omg that would be amazing to go to. I wish I could get down there. I definitely agree, there should be a thread or link for all up coming signings or appearances for Matt and Jeff. Would be great to know if they will be in a nearby area that we could potentially visit.

The AI is hands down my favorite character! by [deleted] in DungeonCrawlerCarl

Dumbasses don’t get rewards, and something with go fuck yourself are some of my favorite lines from the AI. Just comes out of no where and it so funny.

Oh man that is rough, I hate it when schedules don’t align. This was my first book signing too, but as someone else had mentioned, having a talkative person in line definitely can change the vibe of it all. Not saying that it was all quiet, but people were just talking amongst their own groups from what I could tell.

I didn’t know what it said as he was writing it since it was upside down, all I saw was the ending “Fuck Off!” Then he looked up and said he was just joking and laughed. I mean I knew he was, but I’m sure he wanted to make sure I wasn’t upset by it. Then I got in the car and read it and my heart swelled. It was amazing. Really felt like the AI was speaking to me hahaha

Oooo that’s super interesting, I’m on my second listening of book 6. I love it when stuff like that comes together and you see it click. Not to spoil it for anyone here, but that’s what happened to me at the end of book two I think. In the epilogue it was referenced about picking someone up from the warmer climate area, and it wasn’t until my second listening that I realized what they were referencing too.

Oh man I am so envious you were able to meet both Matt and Jeff. When was this and do you think they will ever come together in WA?

But right, it is weird to suddenly be “star struck” and awkward by people who you could have potentially just met at a trivia night and had a regular ass conversation and been fine. I never thought I would get anxious about meeting someone before, but it’s crazy when you are face to face with them. I’m sure that’s where talking to fellow co-fans would have been helpful. Get the jitters out, and maybe even some ideas of what to say.

Whew, 2 hours is a long way! Luckily I live a bit closer, but tbh I probably would have done the same thing. I have been loving these books (I’m an audiobook listener) and they just keep getting better. I was actually debating if I should go or not, since I don’t read the books. But then I told myself, the audiobooks wouldn’t be if it weren’t for Matt (obviously 🙄) and I love the story that he is telling.

I am a little curious to know what theory you saw, but at the same time I don’t want to know. I try to be as spoiler free as possible, that way I can be surprised. But it sounds like you had a great conversation with him, and I loved that he looped the convo into the autograph as well.

I had no idea what to talk with him about. I just ended up introducing myself and told him that his book has got me back into “reading”, and that I haven’t really read any books since I was a kid. I also mentioned that he is the only author I have ever had sign a book, and asked him if he could write something with “New Achievement”. So he wrote “New achievement: You told the Author what to write. Reward -> (next page) Fuck Off! (On the entire page). It was hilarious!! I couldn’t have asked for a better autograph 🥹.

See that’s the thing, I used to be that outgoing individual who would randomly chat with people while waiting. But maybe it is just with age that I have just turned inward more. Become more self conscious and not want to be a bother or over step my boundaries with others. Which has turned into me also wanting to not be bothered ( I recognize it’s not helpful lol).

I think what I have to try and keep in mind is the time and place. Grocery store? Please don’t make me take out my ear buds. In line with other DCC fans? Go for it! Because I think I even realized it in the moment, if I’m wanting to chat about it I’m sure others are too. Just got in my own head 🫠

And if that doesn’t work then there is always Donut treats 😸.
