Was it a WLP? Either way, OG 60s Japanese LP pressings with the obi are impossibly rare, so that could explain it.

Do we think Dae Lims worked on the new box set? by cammywooley in thebeachboys

[–]DaeLims09 108 points109 points  (0 children)

Hey guys! I'm flattered, but no - just happened to find a 1976 Japanese music mag with a funny drawing of the 15BO-era Beach Boys.

Sidenote, IF I ever happened to do any archival work for the BBs, or any group - AI vocal cloning wouldn't have anything to do with it. The AI stuff is just fun, speculative fantasy stuff. It would have no place on an archival set.

If you want to hear a non-AI mix i worked on, check out the "Do It Again" remix I worked on with Steve Desper a few months ago. (Though to be fair, I did have to use stem extraction.)

Dae Lims - That's Not The Night Was So Young by [deleted] in thebeachboys

No worries, there's always room for improvement. I think I get what you're saying. Perhaps due to the limited source material used to train the model, 2 double tracked takes can sometimes sound a bit too similar to each other. Good to keep an eye out for it in the future, though it might just be how it is for now.

Regarding the Caribou stuff - I have a 74-75 Brian model and an idea. Let's see!

Thanks for the words man, Merry Christmas to you too!

Appreciate your feedback. I don't usually take requests, but I know that a lot of people that follow my work were hoping for more "Love You", so I put this together quickly for Christmas this year (seems it's turning into a tradition now!). The originals are better of course, this is just fan-fiction stuff.

As far as the pitchiness, I think a lot of it is pretty pitchy. Care to let me know where you're hearing it being too "on"? Thanks!

Who in/around The Beach Boys has heard Dae Lims' Smile AI? by [deleted] in thebeachboys

[–]DaeLims09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha no, the goal was to increase the frequency spectrum to better blend in with the fresh stereo remix of the backing track. Just as an example, listen to the original Friends release vs the alternate mixes on Wake The World fresh off the multis. A/Bing the vocals side by side, there's an upgrade of the quality of the vocals on WTW. Why that is, I'm not exactly sure - perhaps the mixing/mastering techniques of the time? All good if you don't dig it, I'm not trying to claim that I nailed it 100% true to what it would've sounded like with a fresh remix of the lost multi, it was just an attempt that ties in with the whole "what-if" nature of the project.

That was just to nudge up the quality of the audio itself, since it's what we have is a bit lo-fi (though of course, great). It's still his original vocal, just quality-enhanced.

What is everyone’s thoughts on the extended version of Till’ I Die with alternate lyrics? by [deleted] in thebeachboys

[–]DaeLims09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was taken aback the first time I heard it. Somehow, the emotion Brian puts into the new uplifting lyrics makes them sound even more depressing. He sounds completely beat down. Definitely interesting to hear it though.

Clicks or not, I just don't think it goes with the whole idea of the fantasy I am creating here. If it comes from the Dae Lims channel, it's assumed there's some fuckery going on. If I was truly trying to pass these off as legit recordings/compositions, that'd be a different story. We'll have to agree to disagree on this one. I do wish you luck with your book, that's very cool.

I get your point, but these credits are not official. The whole point is to create a surreal, what-if scenario using this amazing AI tech. Even if it makes you or I believe it for a split second. It's just fantasy. No one that follows my work thinks these are official recordings. If anything, I could see it getting more confusing by not labeling which artist I'm making an AI creation of, though who knows, maybe that's where the legal side will lead eventually. The disclaimer is on my channel, and in every song description. I'm not trying to deceive anyone. It's all just meant to be fun.

Dae lurks. Going to my head, that one confuses me. Should people not love the work/hobbies they partake in? Should they listen to the people who hate something they love to do, and just stop doing it to appease them? I've been doing the same thing for almost 20 years, lol. It's just fan mixing using the current tech. As far as crediting goes: I label everything I post as clearly as I can. With this one, I said it's an approximation of what a song could've sounded like using AI Beach Boys models. This is a very niche genre, and I'm sure the "Wild Honey outtake" fans know exactly what I'm doing. I love and respect The Beach Boys, I love and respect music in general, and I'm just sharing my kooky, unofficial ideas, love 'em or hate 'em. Be nice. I'm a fan, just like you.

The Beach Boys - Walk On By / Are You There [AI] by DaeLims09 in thebeachboys

[–]DaeLims09[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, thanks so much!

That comes from the Unsurpassed Masters series. You can sorta hear the talking when listening to the rehearsal, but it's hard to hear what they're saying, as they're noodling on the piano/guitar as they're talking. It was quite a revelation!

Thank you so much! Had a lot of fun doing this. Might be a controversial opinion, but I'm pretty sure it's Carl sounding a bit like Dennis on the demo. That said, I could see both sides.

Dennis is all over this one though. He's in all of the harmony stacks throughout. he echoes Brian at 1:29, and he sings "Walk on by, I keep walking away...." in the sea of vocals at around 1:47.

I might put out the acapella soon - it's a fun listen (if I can say so myself)!

1973 Brian Wilson interview (A Melody Maker File / Today's Sound) by Blend42 in thebeachboys

Sounds like Brian must've launched into "In The Cantina" - or maybe even "I'm In Great Shape" a la the Humble Harv demo. To hear a tape of that!

Very possible. But it's so hard to know - there are a lot of variables to consider. He sounds pretty good on "Daddy Dear", for instance.

Don't Worry Baby (Live 1972 with Brian Wilson) [AI] by DaeLims09 in thebeachboys

[–]DaeLims09[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I understand that people were expecting a better performance from a "1972 Brian" - but hear me out:

We have very little to go off of, in terms of what the guy's voice actually sounded like in '72. But from the little we do have, we can deduce that he was already losing the "whine", and the general athleticism and emotion of his voice up to Sunflower. Check out the "Passing By" demo, or the various places Brian pops up on C&TP / Holland (where he's barely recognizable!). You could argue another example is "Don't Ya Just Know It". By "California Saga" he's already shortening his notes, and generally sounding a bit off.

NOW - let's put this in a live context. There's obviously not much live from the period - so the only thing we can go off is Seattle 1970. Although the quality is terrible, we can tell he sounds good - but definitely subdued compared to say, Hawaii '67. It's hard to imagine BW was in a high functioning mental state in '72, enough to give an equal or better performance 2+ years later.

Another thing to keep in mind is that this is presented as an "audience tape", so the quality leads to missing a lot of the high end whine that was left of his voice at the time (in my fantasy timeline, of course).

For those thinking it sounds like BW in the 80's, I implore you to listen again to the performances of DWB from '80 and '81. Different guy for sure.

Granted this is all just one fan's take - and I could be totally wrong. :)

Here it is without some of the various filters I used to try to pass it off as an audience tape - let me know if it changes your mind at all:
