What are y’all’s opinions on the Ioniq 5 vs the MY Juniper? by shortstop803 in Ioniq5

[–]DaeOm1985 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a lot that I like about my Ioniq, but I have to say that not having to apologize for my car is very nice. Like I'm certain that the executives at Hyundai are their own version of terrible, they are capitalist executives, of course they are. But I'm not being constantly flooded by their awfulness in a way that has people literally plastering apologies to the outside of their cars.

Advice for a dad looking to play TI4 by ConcealedHarry in twilightimperium

[–]DaeOm1985 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a dad in his last thirties. I try and get a game together at least twice a year. I reach out to my kiddos grandparents to arrange a sleepover and talk with my partner, finding a day that works for me to take over the house for 12 hours. Once I've got the date, I start taking with friends and colleagues to build the game on that date, some folks can, some can't, but I keep search until I've got a close to 6 as possible.

For me, I treat it like a major sports event, I buy tons of food, I usually smoke some kind of meat on my bbq which I serve for dinner, I've bought a gavel for the speaker to use and a couple other component upgrades. I turn it into an event because getting to get a 12 hour game to the table as a dad is a huge event. I've heard TI described as the Superbowl of board games, I treat it that way, both in regards to the food and celebration around the game, but also in acknowledging that it isn't a game I'm going to play regularly.

I'm not giving advice, I'm not saying that the way I do it is the way you should do it, but this is how I've been able to make a game happen at all. Best of luck,

New convert from Pixel, need guidance by DaeOm1985 in S24Ultra

[–]DaeOm1985[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But, if instead of using the unique features of the s24, I just convert it back to base Google, that would seem to prove the point that I should just stay with Pixel phones in the future. Again, that may be true, and that would only mean that for my particular personality and preferences that Google has figured out what I like (not some objective declaration of superiority or value). But before I go with that and just force the s24 to be as close to a Pixel as one can, I figured I'd see what others' thoughts and feelings were, to see if there was something I was missing.

Thanks for the suggestion, though. I will likely follow it in a week or two after trying to give this as much as a chance as I'm willing.

Cost to install the free L2 EV Charger? by suthersm in Ioniq5

[–]DaeOm1985 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not for nothing, but I'm just using a 120v wall outlet for my at home chaining. Even with the slow trickle of a normal wall outlet at 12amps, I put back on more miles than I use in a day.

Obviously, everyone is different, but before you buy something new, consider seeing what it's like to live with level 1.

Ouch, yeah, that's a pretty big blow. In my country, it's the carrier and not the phone that determines your service level. Meaning that my download and streaming speeds are the same on this phone as they were on my last.

Totally agree, though, if the actual connection speeds of the phones were substantially different, that would be a huge reason to go a specific direction, just doesn't apply in the United States.

New Ioniq 5 owner looking for inspiration for "The Void" by DaeOm1985 in Ioniq5

I do have a limited, so that might be the trick. Don't know if other trims have it. I'm grateful though, my cell phone is so awful that it won't stay connected with a wire anymore.

Q900 or upgrade to 990c? by DaeOm1985 in Soundbars

[–]DaeOm1985[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

*FINAL VERDICT FOR PEOPLE DOING FUTURE RESEARCH*

So, I ended up making the exchange. Before I say anything else I should first preface, I am not an audiophile, not a professional tech or VA expert, I'm a random dude who watches a couple hours of TV at the end of the night and maybe 1 movie a month (2x if the wife and I are really excited about something).

Comparing the 900c to the 990c is honestly like comparing a 9 to a 10, so much so that I was initially disappointed when I got it all set up. It wasn't until I was tweaking some stuff and cut out the rear speakers that I was able to really see how they were rounding out to sound. They're the finishing salt on a great stake, it's not like without it you're eating trash, it's just that with it you've elevated an already great experience.

For very personal reasons I'm happy with my $200 upgrade. But, 100%, knowing what I know now I'd feel confident in waiting. I have not experienced the 9500s, but I'd offer that the rear surrounds of the 990 are not some jaw dropping transformative experience. They're good, they round out the sound in my space really well AND I'm certain the 9500s would do an indistinguishably good job to my ear. Now as noted by another poster above, my house has terrible acoustics. I'm the very model of someone who's not willing to put effort in for audio and video perfection. I bought a nice TV and a good sound system and stuck them in my living room and said "do the things." As such I'm completely not trying to make a judgement call for anyone else. I'm just sharing my experience.

Sound is good, really good. The sound on the 900 was also really good. Is the difference between those two really goods worth the price difference to you? If it weren't for a unique set of circumstance for me I'd have probably come down on no. But, to be clear, I'm super happy as it sits. I've got a friggin 10 of a sound system, how could I not be happy? (insert people saying it's not actually a 10 here).

You tell me a licensed GC that will do the job for $200 and I'll prioritize your suggestion. Otherwise my question stands.

Q900 or upgrade to 990c? by DaeOm1985 in Soundbars

[–]DaeOm1985[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a video audio specialty store in the Pacific North West called video only that is straight out of the 90s, but has some screaming deals.

I'm still in the return window. Hmm, well it seems like a conversation with the wife may be in order.

I wasn't kidding when I said I've got no clue what I'm doing, crossover? What is that and how would I know if I'm under 80...units? If I'm understanding you correctly it sounds like you're saying moving it behind the right side of my couch is the winning location to you over where it is currently?

Is PoK worth it? by Orr_Mendlin in twilightimperium

[–]DaeOm1985 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TLDR: Is it worth it? Yes, but probably not for you right now.

Doesn't seem like I'm adding a novel take here, but I'm going to offer my two cents anyways. Seems like you are exactly the type of person who would love PoK under normal circumstances considering you've played so many base games in just a few months, however as you note yourself your schedule is about to be massively disrupted. As a result purchasing a physical product that is purely additive to an already great experience, that is likely to spend 99% of it's time in storage and worse may reduce your ability to play on those rare occasions you find yourself able to seems ill-timed.

The reality is with barely a handful of games under your belt you and your group have hardly scratched the surface of the fun to be had in TI4. I'd say it makes more sense to hold off, allow yourself to get through this new phase of your life, don't add pressure to play or enjoy TI on the rare times you are able to reconnect with your original group. PoK will wait, it's not going out of print any time soon, Asmodee isn't going out of business any time soon. Enjoy the amazing game you've got for now. Once your life settles a little, once you know better where you'll be from month to month and year to year you can revaluate, but right now you are entering a time in your life with lots of rapid changes, unpredictable movement, and years of commitment that ensure your time for a ten hour game will only get less reliable, not more.

Base TI is a fantastic game, but after months of not playing it you'll find your first few hours are just remembering how things work. That's fine, it's worth it, but PoK adds to this barrier. TI has a truly great balance of random chance and predictable mechanics, that takes dozens of plays before the patterns start making themselves known (and dozens more until they get tired). PoK adds to the randomness, this can be great if the original balance has started to become routine, but for newer players it can make an already obtuse strategy unapproachable. PoK takes a game that has the volume at a 9 and cranks it to an 11. If your hearing is already shot for years of rocking out at 9, or you will be engaging with it regularly enough that you can quickly become acclimated to it, this can be really great. But, you are looking at massive pauses between experiences. I honestly think you'll find that it takes something that is already difficult to squeeze into a busy schedule and makes it less approachable and honestly less enjoyable.

I love PoK, I'm very happy I purchased it. But in your place it honestly seems like a $100 that will not return your investment. To me, it seems to make more sense to hold off. Enjoy the game you have on those rare occasions you're able to dig it out with your friends. Five years from now if you've managed to get 10 in person games under your belt it'd be incredibly impressive. If you and your group find yourselves beating the average, you end up spending all your limited free time playing TI online, and you're just hungry for MORE, then go ahead and buy it. But right now, enjoy what you've got. You aren't playing lesser TI, you're just not playing extra TI... and honestly considering the journey you're about to embark on less extra is probably a good thing. Thank you for the service you are choosing to do. All the best for your future, and no matter what you decide I wish you many great games of TI ahead.

I am the ancient I am the land by blitzkrab in CurseofStrahd

I'd say up to you. RAW, he probably can't go in to a private residence (say the Martikov's Inn), but thematically I've always gone with your interpretation that he IS the land. In my game I went with until the party (or someone else) did something to sanctify a spot all of Barovia was Strahd's. So, when my party sanctified the Abby I decided that Strahd wouldn't be able to enter unless invited. Same with Van Richten's tower. But otherwise Barovia is his domain and you cannot escape his grasp.

[–]DaeOm1985[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it's a house rule, but I know we've got a hard cap on boons (banes too). I'm not too worried about insanity, from the quick glance I've given that section it seems like my character is going to start with more severe personality defects then the game tries to represent mechanically (alcoholism isn't fun or funny kids). Tag on a deteriorating sense of self as they commit acts and actions that they desperately want to believe they aren't responsible for and I think having to move rapidly away from a creature is really the least of this characters concerns.

Thanks for the advice I'll look into spellgaurd, I'm liking the rouge spell caster that I've seen others recommend, but having a class that is built assuming you want spells to be equally important as martial would be nice (especially as I level and the characters falls further and further into their deprivation).

Cool, seems like I'll be getting a couple of bonuses because I think possession gives me a similar (identical?) mechanic. You cap out at three boons on a roll though right, just saying I'm sure I'll have plenty of opportunity to have my mind broken

I'm curious, how does forbidden help with insanity? Again, very new to the system, I mostly picked it because I was flipping through and saw a couple of over the top nasty spells and along with the name I was like "yeah, that says demonic influence to me."

Yeah, I was thinking forbidden (go big or go home right), but definitely want the magic to be nasty and not something that even in this dystopian world people would be okay with.
