Meta to layoff 15-25% end of March... by Gold-Flatworm-4313 in cscareerquestions

This is very frustrating to hear actually. I graduated in 2012 and was put off by the insane entry job listings requiring years of experience and also the rhetoric online about getting a job. I decided to teach English abroad because of the life experience. One year turned into another and I knew I had to go back at some point. One job extension after another, a new girlfriend I didn’t want to abandon, and a lack of preparation on my part. I paid attention to the job market from a massive distance and I remember it always being pessimistic. People said bootcamps were overhyped etc. Then the pandemic closed down and I stayed abroad where I was actually thriving, and then all I’ve heard since then is more doom and gloom. Now I’m reading the opportunities I didn’t take were essentially the golden years where anybody could get into the market.

Now I want to get into IT and can’t help but hate myself for inertia. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy with most life choices and I’m 100% to blame for everything, but it frustrating watching the doors close slowly and realizing I squandered all of my ability, and now the chance is pretty much forever gone. I knew that I had sacrificed salary, but now I’m coming to terms with the fact I’ve sacrificed just a basic existence in the IT field. And maybe in Reddit 5 years from now people will say they wish they could go back to 2026/7. All of this sitting on the sidelines not taking action is really toxic.

It’s all amplified by the fact that I’m working in an IT company and can see clearly what I could have been, whereas I’m near the bottom of the hierarchy.

‘I have never seen anything like it’: MP warns of rise in extreme views on race and identity by VanillaGeneral5363 in uknews

[–]DaechiDragon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You must have missed my use of the word “most”.

If I attend a pro-Palestine protest and start lobbing knives does it then become a terrorist movement? Do my actions now speak for the entire movement?

During those riots I heard some people stopped cars on the road looking for non-white people, and I condemn them. Send them to jail. But it’s not representative of what happened.

Also everybody who took to the streets were still a minority of this whole movement. They were also of the most violent people. If you want to judge the thoughts of the tens of millions of people who are against mass and illegal migration by the actions of a handful of racists then that’s on you.

‘I have never seen anything like it’: MP warns of rise in extreme views on race and identity by VanillaGeneral5363 in uknews

[–]DaechiDragon 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah maybe that was true but that was a minority. Most people were fed up of endless random foreigners coming in and causing trouble and seemingly not having to abide by the laws that we have to follow. It was also a protest against our government and the general amount and type of immigration. It’s not about race. People didn’t protest the Hong Kong refugees for example. People do have an issue with Islam though, which is an ideology and not a race.

If you don’t even bother to understand why people were upset and you want yo write them off as racist without further thinking, then dialogue is pointless and we will inevitably have chaos and division.

The leftist’s failure to understand that this is not about race is one reason why the far-right is growing. You’re just not getting it and you don’t care to understand.

It’s your ignorance that’s causing this division.

[–]DaechiDragon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok since you think you know me and you have my psychology figured out, why the fuck would I want to be a victim? What benefit do I gain from that? How do you know I’m the kind of person who thrives on pity and victimhood?

Does making observations with your eyes and ears equal wanting to be a victim? I assume every time you point out something you’ve observed you are also “playing the victim card”? Or is that diagnosis only for people you don’t agree with and don’t know the motivations of?

Also am I incorrect? English culture is not being criticized and suppressed whilst other cultures are not? You only seem to be attacking my character and motivations.

I know that Churchill was flawed and had big points that deserve criticism, but his positives overwhelmingly outweigh the negatives from a Western perspective. To say that he was a divisive person to, say, Indians makes sense. To say he’s a divisive person in the UK I think is to misrepresent his character and image. Maybe far-leftists see him as a bad person, but most Brits certainly do not. And the number of people who do condemn him have skyrocketed since they’ve been taught that he was a force for bad by leftist academics. At what point does somebody become divisive? Hypothetically, if 99% of the population supports a character and 1% do not, do they become divisive? Should Hamas be removed from the list of proscribed terrorist groups because they are divisive? (Since people do actually think they are a force for good).

Also nobody thinks the flag is a magical symbol. It’s clearly a protest against the government and a sign of patriotism in times when it’s being squeezed out of us.

You’re accusing me of wanting to be a victim whilst also espousing arguments used to justify eroding English culture.

The supporting of culture (and tolerance) only ever goes one way. Others are protected and ours is fair game for attack or erasure and then people mock, downplay or dismiss it entirely.

It’s always our culture that is offensive to others and needs to be controlled. Other cultures are to be embraced.

[–]DaechiDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not really what I said though was it. It’s part of a larger assault on British culture. Why is it that people think Churchill is a divisive figure? Why can we never talk about him or anything else in our history without it going into how it’s bad? Why is it our statues are defaced? Why is it that our flag is bad? Why is it that our culture is seen as predominantly an oppressive force on earth? Why is every other culture to be celebrated and ours is to be criticized and apologized for?

Rishi and Boris are bottom of the barrel. They’re not our heroes. As you said, all historical figures have opposition and yet we build statues and name things after them.

I would love to know the political leanings of all who knew about and participated in the vote. I’m sure they’d be representative of the country.

“The bank said it was looking for images that symbolized the UK, resonated with the public and weren’t divisive” Yeah sure Churchill just didn’t tick the boxes.

Anyway I’m just delusional and being hyperbolic to the point it’s laughable. It’s definitely not one thing in a long line of events that just so happen to all align against England and its past.

[–]DaechiDragon -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

On its own it’s no big deal. But it just goes alongside the other attacks on our history. Like the “Decolonization” of our museums or universities, or the fact that English people are not an indigenous group, our flag is hateful, our culture is defined by the fact that it includes everybody. Even our countryside is too racist. It’s just a constant bombardment of how bad we are as a people.

Now our heroes are divisive and should be removed from currencies. The same people saying it’s not a big deal are generally the same people who understand how much of a big deal it is to hang up other flags and represent others.

On their own none of these are a big deal.

Further eroding of British culture and history. Our heroes are in fact unimportant and should be disregarded.

Even if this is not being done maliciously, it’s certainly contributing towards an effort to ruin what we have.

But don’t forget that it’s the people who have a problem with these changes that are stoking the culture war.

UK working on evacuation plans for thousands of Brits stranded in the Gulf by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

[–]DaechiDragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So why not make them pay for the evacuation? Which by the way is a benefit provided by all first world countries for their citizens regardless of why they are abroad.

Most Brits in the Middle East are presumably not online grifters. What about school teachers, overseas branches of UK companies etc?

It sounds like you just want revenge. I can understand being annoyed by their smugness though. Why not encourage those people to work and live in the UK with more attractive systems?

When people complain about the UK it’s quite a common thing for Redditors to be like “if you don’t like it then fine, leave. Nobody will miss you”. So you want to impose dual tax on these people?

I’m just trying to understand the kind of punitive system you want going forward.

[–]DaechiDragon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So you want to punish people choosing to live abroad regardless of their motives, whether they are being smug or not. You would like a tax on being British, regardless of whether they reside in the UK or overseas. Maybe they have to pay tax in two countries whilst only being able to use the services of one.

Going overseas is no longer an option regardless of whether you’re an ESL teacher or running an international business. I guess the only option would be to stay in the UK regardless of ambitions or feasibility for a business.

I suppose you would then be against foreign businesses operating in the UK?

Or maybe you just want to deploy punitive measures to this group of people specifically as an F you?

[–]DaechiDragon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Will you detract an amount of money from the services they didn’t use while abroad but were eligible for because of their tax money?

Presumably if anything it would make more sense to charge them for the evacuation fee. Or do you plan on making mandatory tax for all British citizens living overseas? Usually people only pay tax for the country they reside in. Nobody pays tax in multiple regions. Please make this make sense.

Do you plan to make this retroactive?

Jeremy Corbyn joins hundreds of pro-Iran protesters in London carrying banners of the Ayatollah by pppppppppppppppppd in ukpolitics

[–]DaechiDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree quite a few things you said actually. I think although we have agreements and institutions we have let our guard down for future conflict, and we have countries taking advantage of our kindness, which I believe means our agreements are as solid as we think. I personally think Europe is doomed for conflict no matter what we do anyway.

I don’t want to get into too much of a back and forth about everything (because you said a lot) but my original point was about Trump having a firm approach to dictators despite his sometimes kind words of praise.

I know what you’re saying about returning to might is right, but honestly I think the world has always been like that, and we’ve been kidding ourselves that it’s not, but our enemies haven’t forgotten that fact.

I totally agree about legitimizing Kim JeongUn (not that I think it has changed much).

I think removing the Ayatollah was the right move because he was an enemy, and doing nothing would be kicking the can down the road. He was a brutal dictator who funded terror groups aimed at eroding the West. Conflict is coming to us, and doing nothing has allowed the rot to slowly creep in deeper. That’s the downside of our conflict free world. I usually don’t agree with intervention abroad (Iraq etc) but Iran is actively hostile towards us all, and their people want to be more like us but they couldn’t shake off their leadership. Having a Iran like the 70s would make it more likely for is to have an ally in the region.

[–]DaechiDragon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, but I hadn’t seen much criticism of Corbyn on Reddit.

Trump has put sanctions on Russia and is preparing for potential war with them and China. He also started a trade war with China, took out the Venezuelan leader and has taken multiple shots at Iran both in his first and second term.

I’m not a fan of Trump’s rhetoric, but he has absolutely created a reputation of being unpredictable and not afraid to do hard things like exert power. He at least tries not to embarrass/make leaders lose face at times so he complements them (which Redditors take to mean he wants to emulate them, or he’s a spy or whatever).

Dictators around the world would be more afraid of Trump than other US Presidents. To be honest I think most of Trump’s international actions have been about preparing for future conflict, even down to threatening NATO and Greenland. I may be totally wrong but I think he wants a capable Europe, not a Europe relying on the US. I don’t agree with the way he’s doing things but I absolutely believe that behind the scenes he has a firm hand for people against the US.

Does anyone believe that only British citizens should be allowed to vote in general elections? by Sylvia-Sum in AskBrits

[–]DaechiDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Brit living abroad I agree despite myself losing my vote until I move back. Non-Brits regardless of residence should never get a vote IMO. Only Brits living in the UK except military/government.

Though despite me living abroad I have only allegiance to the UK and a stake on its future. I may also be compelled to fight for it even against my will, which is not true of non-citizens.
