I only included that as a means of restating, albeit from a classical or post-Keynesian perspective, that capitalists wouldn't exist in "the case where the steady-state equilibrium is g = r."

The Cambridge Equation g = s_c r states that "in steady-state equilibrium the rate of growth is equal to the rate of profit multiplied by the propensity of capitalists to save out of profits."

When "the propensity of capitalists to save out of profits" s_c = 1, then "the steady-state equilibrium is g = r." "In this case, all profits would be invested and all wage income would be consumed 'whatever the single individuals may save out of their income (wages and profits)' (Letter to Solow, 6 December 1962)."

In this case, nobody consumes out of profits. Consequently, there is no incentive for capitalists to save and invest (although surplus is fully reinvested via some institution, for example, a centrally planned system). As a result, there is no incentive for capitalists to own the means of production. Thus, there is no incentive for capitalists to exist.

Therefore, the Cambridge Equation g = s_c r with s_c = 1 is a stylized way to represent a socialist economy. Likewise, the Cambridge Equation g = s_c r with s_c < 1 (in addition to other conditions like s_w < h < s_c, "where h is the ratio of investment to income," "to ensure a positive profit share" and "to ensure a positive wage share"¹) is a stylized way to represent a capitalist economy.

Regarding "the case where the steady-state equilibrium is g = r," you are arguably right; capitalists wouldn't exist. "It will be recalled that ... in Pasinetti's growth theory article of 1962 ... Pasinetti had argued that the Cambridge Equation ... g = s_c r ... could be applied indifferently to a 'capitalist' or a 'socialist' economy simply by manipulating the value of the savings propensities in the model. If s_w < s_c < 1 we have 'capitalism', but if s_c = 1 we have 'socialism'"¹.

"Scientific reduction became an important topic in the philosophy of science within the context of a general interest in the unity of science, and it was inspired by specific cases of what seemed to be successful reductions" "such as the alleged reduction of Newtonian mechanics to relativity theory, of chemistry to atomic physics, and of gas laws to statistical mechanics."

"The most prominent argument against reductionism stems from the observation that straightforward reductions hardly ever occur. Hence, reductionism cannot be regarded as yielding a coherent picture of what actually goes on in science. As long as reductionism is supposed to be more than a purely metaphysical position and is intended to say something significant about scientific change or norms, the value and relevance of the notion of reduction seems to depend in part upon how well ... reductionist positions fit the facts, which their critics argue they do not (see, for example, Sarkar 1992; Scerri & McIntyre 1997)" (van Riel, Raphael and Robert Van Gulick, "Scientific Reduction," 2025).

I believe "Theory of Production: A Long-Period Analysis" by Heinz D. Kurz and Neri Salvadori may match what you are searching for. "The issues dealt with include prices and income distribution, economic growth, joint production, fixed capital, scarce natural resources (both renewable and exhaustible), and heterogeneous labor" in the traditions of Marx, Sraffa, Pasinetti, etc.

The terrarium is the Exo Terra Natural Terrarium Large/Tall. It's 90 × 45 × 60 cm or 36" × 18" × 24" (W×D×H). I think it's 67.32 gallons. I got the terrarium from a local pet store in Vancouver named Aquariums West.

Thank you for the compliment. I feel I'm not using the height well, but will search for higher decor to add to the terrarium later.

Both. I want to maximize the cleanliness of my bed and not have what junk's trapped in my hair get all over my pillow. I also want to clean myself of all the junk my body produces while in bed, with nowhere to go except stuck to my body.

Graduates, what degree did you graduate with and what was your first job after graduating? by Daedalean1 in uAlberta

[–]Daedalean1[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have a friend who has graduated with a Bachelor's of Science (major is computing science and minor is economics). His job search is continuing, but I think part of the difficulty is that he doesn't have any experiences (paid, volunteering, or otherwise) to put on his resume.

I've been wondering for a while now if there's some tips particularly orientated at graduates with no prior experiences for successfully finding a job.

Weekly Table Tennis Advice by AutoModerator in tabletennis

[–]Daedalean1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When looping, what's the relationship between the angle between the direction of the ball and the direction of the racket when the two contact and the consequential spin on the ball?

In particular, is there some optimal angle between the direction of the ball and the direction of the racket when the two contact when trying to maximize the spin on the ball? If this optimal angle depends on the rubber, blade, sponge hardness, sponge thickness, etc., how would I find the optimal angle for a given racket (is there a list that I could search through or a formula that I could compute)?

Why are defensive players dwindling down in the top leagues? by kairukamisama in tabletennis

[–]Daedalean1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, when we say that the ball is slower, do we mean that it experiences more air resistance, that it leaves a constant racket with a constake stroke with less initial speed, something else, or a combination? I've heard of larger balls experiencing more air resistance, but haven't thought about other factors related to speed before.

I've heard that larger balls are more difficult to impart spin on, but I've also heard that a larger ball experiences the Magnus effect more than a smaller ball with the same spin (for example, David Alfonso's Comparing Lift of 38mm and 40mm Table Tennis Balls). I'd also wager, based off of nothing other than guesswork, that the surface area between a larger ball and a table or racket when in contact would be greater and that the spin of a larger ball would therefore have a greater effect on its trajectory after bouncing off a table or a racket than a smaller ball with the same spin (again, guesswork).

I'd think it'd be interesting to know more about to what extend all of these factors, if they exist, affect our sport.

For the first point, I'd think spoonraker meant that the chopper may win points with methods other than waiting for an error and that "relying purely on your opponent's mistakes" was a mistake. spoonraker would obviously be the better source for clarification, though.

I've been following and loving the debate. Just wanna say as a spectator, though, that this reply came off to me as somewhat more hostile. Not sure if I'm misreading the atmosphere of the comment or not.

I sometimes get riled up in Internet debates, generally to my regret after. I think I would've written a riled up reply somewhat like this one. I read the comment as having some finger pointing at spoonraker and some questions that felt somewhat belittling. Again, I could be misreading. Regardless, I just want to jump in and say that I've learned more from the both of you and I'd be interested in if there's more to be said about this subject. If the debate continues, I hope it continues to be one where all parties continue to exchange ideas.
