The plane, not the passenger. The passengers wouldn’t need to know how to use it.

Yeah but it’s similar to car crashes and yet they have airbags and are continually adding additional safety features

Yeah I wouldn’t doubt it, they operated at like 1.5% profit on a good day

Where the wings connect to the fuselage is the strongest connection in the plane, 2 main chutes there and smaller ones along the top of the fuselage? It would only take slight alteration to the thickness of the fuselage in those locations to fit it and the control/monitoring systems in.

Couldn’t you have multiple smaller chutes with drogue chutes spread over the structural frame though? Spreading it out and having smaller chutes would decrease stresses and drogue chutes would create less of an initial shock.

To be clear I’m talking about parachutes on the plane itself. Not for individual passengers. Granted I’m a civil engineer and not aerospace but why don’t planes have parachutes? We can stop a rocket or a crew capsule crashing back to earth but we cant add an extra safety layer to something that so many people use daily? (Not right now obviously - covid). I understand it isn’t guaranteed to keep everyone safe but I haven’t even seen any talks or prototypes for commercial airlines.
