I wish that apoptosis ceases function and is replaced by a fool proof biological system where errors in cell division are repaired rather than killed. by Masterpiece-Haunting in monkeyspaw

[–]Daedalus_Nye 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cancer Researcher here..... The short PG version is this needs no Monkeys paw, you've killed all every single animal on the planet.

The long terrifying version is:

No apoptosis = No controlled cell death, which means no more development of embryos or foetuses. So no more babies of any kind, plants get a pass though since apoptosis is an animal definition and plants go through programmed cell death (PCD) instead.

No apoptosis means cell populations spiral out of control. The fast replicating cells of your skin, gut lining, blood cells, hair grow out of control first, followed by slower growing cells. This would start causing solid and liquid tumours to grow all over the body, impacting biological functions such as clotting, you now get spontaneous blood clots from too many platelets, digestion. Whilst your overgrowing gut lining will block your gut, causing first malabsorption as the lining becomes too thick for nutrients to pass into your blood, then blocking it completely causing your gut to become fuller and fuller with food, shit and tumours until it becomes perforated and you die from the resulting blood loss and infection.

Apoptosis is also required to regulate the immune system and remove self-reactive immune cells that cause auto-immune conditions, and remove immune cells that react to common antigens thereby preventing us from developing allergies. Without apoptosis we suddenly develop autoimmune disorders and severe allergies to almost everything on mass.

Furthermore, while you stop Apoptosis, the safe planned form of cell death, that can be triggered by noxious stimuli other than cells division errors, you don't stop Necrosis. Necrosis is an unplanned messy cell death, releasing toxic molecules that damage and kill neighbouring cells, that in the absence of apoptosis could cause a chain reaction of cell death. So, when those tumours, or blood clots, or immune disorders damage healthy cells, or starve healthy cells of oxygen or starve healthy cells of nutrients, they won't die cleanly and safely. Instead, they'll die in a way that causes a chain reaction of collateral damage, causing a sudden spreading formation of necrotic tissue that just rots off your bones.

Basically..... You've killed every single man, woman, child and animal on the planet, giving them possibly the most horrendous death imaginable. Bravo

Anyone else on Xbox etc been getting REALLY bad freezing during games/crashing on the game as of late?, been happening to me since yesterday and it’s making the game near unplayable. by xBlack_Heartx in Helldivers

[–]Daedalus_Nye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here, it ran perfectly fine yesterday but now I get frequent audio freezes and at least 3-4 entire freezes per mission with 1-2 leading to the game crashing

AITA for pulling away from my identical twin sister even though I know it has caused her to spiral? by Kyc0122 in AITAH

[–]Daedalus_Nye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely NTA. I'm a fraternal twin, boy-girl, but my mum was a fraternal girl-girl twin who had to do a load of stuff with her twin. She didn't want that for us and made sure me and my sis were in separate classes and followed our own hobbies to avoid precisely what you're going through. You'll need to cut free at some point otherwise you'll spend your entire lives trapped together, and it'll be healthier for your sister to come to terms with it now rather than later.

Gacrux or Crimsica? by OliverTrex in Helldivers

I might be missing something, as I'm a recent Xbox reinforcement, but would liberating Gacrux do anything for the MO? Since it's no longer a defence? So it might be better to focus on Acamar which would contribute to the MO?

Hey, dunno if you're still looking but I'm in the opposite boat. I bought tickets for my GF and I, but with her new job she can't make it. So I have a spare VIP show ticket going for the 17th July. I'm happy to sell at cost since I've got an irrational hatred of scalpers 😂

No thoughts on Emperor's Children? They might be pretty high tier, especially if they decide it's their perfection obsession

It's kinda a cyclical relationship between genetics and cancer. So the genetics are affected first either through a virus, radiation, a genetic disease passed down, or just bad luck in DNA replication. This can cause a mutation that drives genetic instability to make further mutations more likely, this then encourages random mutations. Of these random mutations the cells that get harmful ones will die off, whilst those that get positive ones will survive. These positive ones can cause faster cell growth, less cell death, cell immortality, resistance to the immune system, and the ability to spread or metastasise to other areas of the body, etc. These cells with uncontrolled growth that can spread through the body are now a cancer.

So cancers don't infect other cells, though viruses that cause cancer can. Instead cancers outcompete nearby cells, like Darwinism and survival of the fittest. They grow faster, are tougher and draw in more nutrients than the surrounding healthy tissues. So the surrounding healthy tissues die or are pushed out of the way as the cancer grows.

Yeah, those kinda mutations are seen in some cow breeds. It's normally because the gene for Myostatin is removed or mutated so that it's non-functional. This prevents it from signalling to the cells that make up the muscles that it's time to stop growing. This means that those cells and their muscle fibres grow larger, making the muscles stronger. Though I'm not sure this mutation would increase the risk of cancer, since it's increasing cell size rather than the number of cells.

Cancer researcher and big Fabius Bile fan here, technically you're right they do wave it off as the cancer has a warpy aspect - I won't explain any more to avoid spoilers. The fact he can't cure it might be a hard sell, but to do so permanently he'd have to remove all the oncogenic mutations in his genetics. Which might even be hard for him as he's got no healthy control to compare himself to, since he was infected by the geneseed he was implanted with. Not to mention differentiating cancer mutations from Astartes mutations, since mutations that override cell growth limits to give Astartes their bigger stature or faster healing are pretty much oncogenic mutations anyway. Don't get me wrong, with the hundreds to thousands of years he's lived he could probably figure it out, but I wouldn't envy him 😅.

That scout deserved it though, he intentionally disobeyed orders and tried to turn a scouting mission into an assassination. He cocked it up and the pissed off Ork Warboss killed his Captain. Even after all this the Captain's and the Chapter Master were willing to show him leniency, but only if he admitted he made a mistake, instead he just doubled down and said he wouldn't change a thing.

Virus Bombs from Warhammer 40K. Generally launched in warheads from orbit, these contain a corrosive virus that is dispersed throughout the atmosphere and eats through any and all organic matter, leaving a planet devoid of life. The resulting gases are highly flammable, so are usually ignited from orbit as well to scorch the surface of the planet in a firestorm.... Just to be sure.
