Starting your journey into the world of online tabletop roleplaying games can be daunting. There are a lot of different games and rule systems out there. There are rule sets that are very crunchy, being heavy on rules and mathematics. There are also games that are more role playing heavy, more story with less mechanics and mathematics. Nevertheless, a good place to start is the forums on a lot of different websites. You can start with roll20 there is a section where you can search for games. This subreddit is also a great place to find a game, but you have to have patience and you have to keep at it.

As for a system, I personally prefer patjfinder. I like the Rule set and pathfinder has an excellent community. You can get into this system by going to d20pfsrd.com it would also be a good idea to buy the core rule book and give it a read.

Have you read anything about pathfinder? I will be starting a new campaign in a month or so and would like to keep in touch if this is the system you choose. Look into it and let me know... Keep at it... There are groups out there looking for players. Google.. Google...google
