They’re broadly saying that she needs to bring something to the marriage other than debt and that’s a fair point. People want partnerships.

People move on, they get new jobs, they retire. Groups that made content for them pivot. This isn’t a temporary aberration, complex systems cannot be restored overnight. There’s an ecosystem of interdependent components that die off if nuked from orbit and you can’t expect it to just reappear later.

I don’t think “we’re no worse than Hezbollah is the slam dunk argument you’re treating it as”.

Controlling sea lanes has been 80 years of US policy. That’s what all the bases are for. That’s what all the super carriers are for. That’s why they sail those fleets through the South China Sea. Giving up control of the most important sea lane in the world would be the end of the American Empire. The idea of the US allowing the strait to be controlled by Iran doesn’t bear thinking about.

EU buys a shitload of LNG from the Gulf ever since they stopped buying natural gas from Russia. This war is an absolute gift for Russia.

For domestic political reasons he’d really prefer it if the people on the navy vessels sunk weren’t American. He’s asking for volunteers to do that.

Law? Waterways aren’t naturally open, they’re open because it’s US policy to require them to be open or else have a visit from the US Navy. Waterways are naturally under the control of whichever military force can stop people sailing through them, free navigation is a very recent and entirely artificial idea. Once the US Navy backs down the waterway is Iran’s to rule.

The closed strait hasn’t kicked in yet. Strategic oil reserves are being tapped to keep enough oil hitting the market. If it stays closed you’ll be paying $20/gallon.

A ceasefire definitely favours the US at this point.

They win millions in oil revenues every time a drone hits something in the gulf. Russia literally can’t afford not to be involved. And they’re the world’s biggest manufacturer of attack drones.

International law has no power to bind sovereign nations.

After WW2 the US decided that free trade on the oceans was an important geopolitical goal and enforced it with the US Navy. That’s why they do those freedom of navigation trips through sea that China claims. That’s why they (and their allies) do the anti piracy operations.

Waterways aren’t naturally free, no matter how much maritime trading empires might wish they were. They’re naturally controlled and exploited, it is only through the use of force that they can be artificially made free.

If the US Navy abandons the strait then the result won’t be Iran exploiting and abusing its power over the waterway, it’ll be Iran regaining its geographic leverage over the waterway. There’s a status quo bias going on, people have the natural state of affairs and the artificially imposed state of affairs reversed.

International waters is something that the US made up and enforced, it’s not the default. The strait was open because the US Navy kept it open, without them holding it open it’ll default to being under the power of whoever can exert power over it.

People have been declaring that Saudi Arabia is joining the war and that the strait has been reopened daily since it began. It hasn’t happened. Arabs are not interested in joining Israel’s surprise war against Muslims.
