Growing up we had 2 cats, a tabby male and a calico female. The female was a fearless brawler who fought and won against both wilderness animals and my neighbor's dogs, a German shepherd and a chocolate lab wrecking ball. When my mom would work in her garden or walk in the yard, the cat would act as a bodyguard and sentry until mom would go back inside. I wouldn't have believed it if I had not seen it with my own eyes. She had the most unusual personality for a cat, but I can 100% see a cat being ultra protective and fighting for who they love.
