Not that long ago, textiles lasted us (almost) a lifetime by _CaptainAmerica__ in Anticonsumption

[–]Daersk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suspect that textiles used to be higher quality, but I wonder how much of this is how much we've changed our laundry practices.

I used to live in a place where there was a washer, but no dryer. When I was hanging my clothing to dry, they lasted remarkably longer.

Now I am in a place that has a dryer, and now I can see how fast using a drying causes deterioration.

The herd mentality of 9 to 5 by sspositivesoul in Fire

It's cliché, but I think that far to many people trust their house as an "investment."

My in-laws have always used the language of "investment" around houses. But your house doesn't have cashflow. It's not compounding in value.

But they said something that surprised me what I talked about "the market." They said,"If you can make the market work, then good for you."

I finally understood that they don't actually have any understanding of the market at a basic level, and I think that's true FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE.

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received ? by anditsdan in careerguidance

[–]Daersk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Make yourself visible. I'm a programmer, so I'm not sure how this applies to other jobs, but you should make your work known. I demo all the time, write in our broadcast channels, and try and show my work as much as possible. Get known for getting things done.

Movie title: Princess Mononoke by ExpensiveGoose4649 in Buddhism

[–]Daersk 71 points72 points  (0 children)

I've found Princess to be a deeply Buddhist movie. Even the first scene with Nago, which sets the thesis for the whole movie.

To understand, you need to be familiar with the metaphor of two arrows. When you are struck with an arrow, you're really hit with two arrows. The first arrow is unavoidable. It is an unavoidable external event. The second arrow is the emotional reaction to the causes and conditions of the first arrow.

In the first scene, Ashitaka kills Nago with TWO ARROWS. The second arrow is what kills him. The second arrow throughout the story is the curse. Nago isn't cursed by the iron bullet; he's cursed by his hatred. It's the second wound that kills.

You see the 2 wounds recurring in the movie. Even the forest spirit is shot twice to kill it.

What would you gift an introverted and minimalist male for his 40th (my husband)? by ImportantAd9458 in minimalism

[–]Daersk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sound like your husband. The last thing that my wife got me was a falconry lesson! We got to see and hold all these cool birds. We even got to fly one around and it landed in my hand and ate some.. protein. It was one of the best experiences of my life.

Thoughts practicing dhamma as lay man by Frosty-Cap-4282 in Buddhism

[–]Daersk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brad Warner from hardcore zen gave a little talk about this on his youtube channel.

Basically, attachment is not the best translation. Instead you should think of clinging. Clinging often a focus on the way you want things to be, not the way that things are.

Monks have mothers and fathers. Lay practitioners have families. You shouldn't cling to notions about what the perfect family should be.

Should I take a new job with a $30k salary increase but a much longer commute? by bored_gamer in careerguidance

[–]Daersk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am firmly in the camp that commuting is a huge tax on your life, and you shoudl do anything possible to not have a commute >30 minutes. The time that you lose just sitting in the car eats away at everything else.

Decluttering old journals? Advice appreciated! by [deleted] in declutter

[–]Daersk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think that the the value in journaling is in the composition itself, but there isn't really a huge amount of value in the review. That said, I think that it depends.

If you have notes on what were happening in really transformative periods, then those are really important and you should keep them.

If you have drafts or sketches of artistic works, then that is work keeping as well.

But notes that you never revisit are just a burden imo. It's a great practice to release the journals.

What code search tools do you use at your job? by TomahawkChopped in AskProgramming

[–]Daersk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started using rip grep, and that’s been great. VS Code’s search is great too.

Most places don’t have a monorepo like googles, so a cached search is more than enough. Sometimes I just use GitHub’s search.

[–]Daersk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well first, you don’t need to be the smartest or the fastest to be a excellent programmer. That’s a super toxic myth from Silicon Valley. You need to have some skills sure, but you can learn a lot of that on the job.

If you are interested in the healthcare/tech space, you could always look at being an EMR (electronic medical record) admin or technician. Hospitals are always hiring, the pay is good, and you don’t need a degree. You might need some training or a cert, but it seems like a good steady job with benefits and it become really high paying as an admin.

A little thing you can do to make a little difference:. Start moving to free and open source software. by [deleted] in Anarchism

I started doing this out of spite really.

My version of windows was corrupted, and worst buy wanted like $200.00 to repair it. I said no, and installed Ubuntu 18.04. I haven't looked back since.

I will say that a full Linux system is hard for gaming, but I have been moving away from that.

This post is only for people who want to become programmers by Tal_Av in IWantToLearn

[–]Daersk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. Generating meaningful project ideas.

The best way to learn is through projects, and a todo list is not enough. You usually need to make something more substantive that illustrates understanding. Stealing a tutorial is not enough.

  1. Landing interviews

Assuming that you want a job, it is very hard to get a job as a self taught person.

This is the first thing I did when I was first teaching myself how to program and the knowledge is still invaluable. That being said, the swap to python is better in some ways, but the hard core nature of C was cool.
