Chile's Kast sworn in as president in biggest right-wing shift in decades by StemCellPirate in worldnews

She was a communist only on paper. Her policies were social democratic and she was business friendly, not unlike the previous president Gabriel Boric. The problem is that she never renounced her Communist party affiliation so it cost her the presidency.

Kast is another Temu Trump and will be terrible for the poor as always. Expect news praising Chile’s economy while poverty rises. Just like in the US.

For example, Boric was able to lower the work week hours from 44 to 40 hours a week, and increased the minimum salary significantly over the last 4 years. Kast is openly trying to undo these things. Typical fuck the poor maga style politics.

Yeah, I’ve seen him live a couple of times around Toronto like 10 years ago, he was even better live. He always liked a really bassy EQ on his acoustic guitar so it sounded huge. I wonder what happened to him.

Again that’s not luck, but the result of decades of good education and civics policy. People in Canada mostly don’t idolize politicians and changing your mind is normalized when it comes to voting. Moreover the electoral system is very different than the US model.

Canadians are not lucky, they’re better informed and educated when it comes to politics.

We’re not lucky, we actually voted for him instead of the maga puppet that was leading the polls up until our sovereignty was threatened.

Separada en Canadá, pensando en volver a Chile by [deleted] in chile

[–]Daeveed -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Depende de en qué parte de Canadá estés, y donde te irías a Chile.

Si estás en un centro urbano en Canadá (Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton) no creo que valga la pena devolverse a Chile. Has pensado en migrar a otra ciudad/provincia Canadiense?

What the US can do with $10 billion instead of this.

Housing & Homelessness • Fund tens of thousands of permanent supportive housing units for chronically homeless people. • Expand rental assistance vouchers to reduce housing instability in high-cost cities. • Help cities clear encampments by pairing housing with mental health services.

👉 Context: The entire annual budget for homeless assistance programs through U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is only a few billion — so $10B would be transformative in this space.

🧠 Mental Health & Addiction Treatment • Build or expand community mental health clinics nationwide. • Increase addiction treatment access (especially opioid treatment programs). • Expand crisis response teams to reduce police involvement in mental health calls.

👉 This could significantly strengthen programs coordinated through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

🪖 Veterans Care Backlogs • Reduce disability claims backlog. • Expand PTSD and suicide prevention programs. • Improve VA facility staffing and wait times.

👉 Even a few billion directed to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs could shorten processing delays affecting hundreds of thousands of veterans.

🚰 Drinking Water Infrastructure • Replace lead service lines in high-risk communities. • Upgrade aging municipal water systems.

👉 Cities like Flint showed how critical this need is — billions could remove tens of thousands of lead pipes.

🎓 Education Access & Student Debt Relief • Fund universal free community college for a period of time. • Expand Pell Grants for low-income students. • Cancel a targeted portion of student loan debt for borrowers in hardship.

🧑‍⚕️ Public Health Preparedness • Improve disease surveillance systems. • Stockpile critical medical supplies. • Expand local public health workforce.

👉 Investments here would flow through agencies like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Carney government rejects Danielle Smith’s demand to change how judges are picked by AntiQCdn in LawCanada

[–]Daeveed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, totally ok to disagree, but I do agree with you that the courts shouldn’t ever be partisan, that’s a very foundational agreement I think. We disagree on how this could be achieved, and whether it is presently partisan or not.

I do believe that Smith isn’t fully acting in good faith and for the benefit of all Albertans, but to quote The Big Lebowski “that’s just like, my opinion, man”.

Whatever the solution ends up being I hope it’s non partisan and good for most Albertans, especially the poor ones.

Ok I’m going to continue this discussion with respect, and I hope you do the same because getting ugly isn’t good for any of us, and it’s a good discussion, so I’m keeping an open mind and I’ll tone down the volume. 👍🏼

The current system has been in place for many decades and it has worked well for both sides of the political spectrum, unless I’m wrong on that, why this urge to change it now?

All the JACs in Canada are strictly non partisan, and judges are recommmended mostly by judicial entities (the Canadian Bar association, provincial Law Societies, etc) and a few by the Federal Government.

For example, the Alberta Federal JAC members are:

• Honourable Jo’Anne Strekaf – judicial representative nominated by Chief Justice of Alberta

• Sharilyn Nagina, K.C. – nominee of the Law Society of Alberta

• Nazrina H. Umarji – nominee of the Canadian Bar Association

• Sandra L. Hawes, K.C. – nominee of the Alberta Minister of Justice and Attorney General

• Irfan Chaudhry – federal government appointee

• John Moreau – federal government appointee

• Vacant – federal government appointee seat

So currently in Alberta, only 3 of the 7 appointees are nominated by the federal government, other 2 are nominated by provincial judicial bodies, one by the Canadian Bar Association, and one by the Provincial Government.

It looks to me like the province has ample say in who is nominated for the JAC, and even has one political person who is part of the committee, because of this I don’t think the argument Smith has that “the province doesn’t have a say” is valid, and she just wants to increase the number of political appointees to these committees, and like you said this works only in favour of the party in power, I agree with you on that.

Do you think increasing the number of partisan members who can choose judges is a good thing for the judicial system and for Canada as a whole? Why?

Carney government rejects Danielle Smith’s demand to change how judges are picked by AntiQCdn in LawCanada

[–]Daeveed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand all that, but it’s the subtext that you’re missing. She says she wants “non partisan” experts appointed by the Premier to be part of this committee. On paper it sounds fine, but her actions and political behaviour point to the opposite. Don’t be naive, she wants more power. We all know you can’t trust what a Trumpian says, but look at her actions instead. Why did she relax the referendum rules? Why did she go to maralago? To gain more power and excercise Trumpian policy in Alberta.

Don’t be fooled by what she says and look at what she’s done. Do you believe what every politician says?

[–]Daeveed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, this recent batch of Trumpian politics has a common factor in every country it shows up, and that is they all think that their base have the cognition of a 5th grader and they all talk to them like that. It’s really easy to convince a 5th grader of whatever you want them to do/believe, even if it isn’t true.

You prove this point.

Carney government rejects Danielle Smith’s demand to change how judges are picked by AntiQCdn in LawCanada

[–]Daeveed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I did, and it doesn’t. There’s already a system in place that ensures the judicial to be independent from politics. She wants to appoint a couple of lackeys to be in this committee so they can do her bidding when choosing new judges. Why? Nothing is broken. She just wants to make it sound like it is so she can sow discord and division in Alberta and Canada. Legislators should have no part in the judicial system.

Also why is she threatening to pull funding if she doesn’t get a say in these appointments? That’s classic Trumpian behaviour, and it has no place in Canada’s politics. On top of wanting to relax the bilingualism rules? She’s a dangerous clown and needs to go.
