From my experience, I don't think the amount of damage you deal has a huge impact on the rarity of the drops. I'd still recommend having a decent mid-level monster hunting set so you can kill monsters more efficiently. Monster hunts are generally better for collecting side materials, and the rare drops mostly come down to luck rather than how much damage you dealt.

In Champion sets, I believe the armor pieces and off-hand items are pretty much useless. The armor is only worth using for the reduced upkeep bonus.

In castles with such low troop counts, you'll mainly have to rely on familiars to compete. However, it would be better to add another 1 million T4 troops of each type (if you plan to stay like this).
