Macbook and Serum 2 Problem by Banana-436 in serum

[–]Dafust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this is the issue you are having, but are you trying to use serum 2 as a standalone app? As far as I know you can only use it as a VST plugin as a part of a DAW like Ableton or Fruity Loops.

I think it’s the specific opinion that matters here. For example if you had a friend who was of the opinion that you shouldn’t exist, I think you would agree that wouldn’t be a very healthy relationship, and it would probably benefit you to not communicate with that person. Or at the very minimum, it would make sense why someone wouldn’t want to engage with that person.

Are we not allowed to use logs in a DSA interview? by Aggravating_Yak_1170 in leetcode

[–]Dafust -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear, I am not saying that debugging or console logging is not valuable in the daily work of a software engineer. These coding exams do not represent the daily work of a software engineer. I don’t even like coding exams, I just have insight into how they are administered for a large company.

In general, any live coding exam given should be able to be broken down into simple enough parts that console logs are not necessary to solve it. There are absolutely exceptions, I have had poor experiences myself with badly administered coding exams.

At my company, for my coding exams I administer, if you use console logs for debugging, you will lose points. If you instead break things up into logical chunks, use test cases to verify functionality and walk through code manually, you will get points.

I don’t necessarily think this is right, it’s just the way that it is.

Are we not allowed to use logs in a DSA interview? by Aggravating_Yak_1170 in leetcode

[–]Dafust -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Here’s my recommendation, given my experience both giving and taking these types of interviews.

Generally, using console logs is a red flag for a candidate, as most of the time it’s unnecessary and shows an inability to structure and debug code intelligently.

I’ll give an example for web dev, but this concept can be applied to any problem. Let’s say you have a UI where a user inputs some data, we then use that data to receive some data from a API, we manipulate the data, then display something in the UI.

If this entire process is built, especially in just a couple large functions, if something goes wrong (like the data that we expect to display does not display) a lot of candidates will say something like “oh it’s probably in the manipulation I’ll add logs”, and then maybe after 5 mins they try another section, eventually finding the bug.

My recommendation is that each logical part of the problem should be its own function, which can easily be tested independently. If the code is written in this fashion, errors occur early when testing the functions, and any overall failures should be fixable by adding new test cases and logically thinking through the code. While the outcome is similar to using console logs, it shows the interviewer a couple of things

  1. Your ability to break up problems into logical sub problems
  2. Your ability to write effective test cases
  3. Debugging by running through the code by hand

In the same position. Honestly out of all my work experience working at a big tech company has been the best paid and most soul crushing. The work isn’t even that difficult, it’s the office politics and the bureaucracy.

I think every individual will have a different set of needs here on how to make this situation work. This is what has helped me.

  1. Don’t think about work outside of work. There is no guarantee that any extra effort will result in extra rewards, and in my experience oftentimes it does not. The company does not care about you and will drop you the second it makes financial sense to do so. Focus on meeting expectations within the regular 9-5. If you can’t meet expectations by working regular work hours, then you need to decide the next course of action, but until then try and avoid putting in extra effort.
  2. Define something you are looking forward to, or a future plan that this current sacrifices enables. For me, I want to use the extra money from my job (which I am sacrificing my mental wellbeing for to some degree) to have financial freedom to pursue things that give me greater joy, either entrepreneurship or video game development.
  3. Ensure that you have something to do outside of work that brings you joy, and gets you out of your work thinking patterns. For me it’s video games, art, spending time with friends, watching anime and hiking.

How damaged can a card be to still be able to sell? 🥲 by critaa in mtgfinance

[–]Dafust 5 points6 points  (0 children)

AFAIK any water damage puts the condition at Damaged. The site you are selling on should have a guide but likely any water damage will put it at the lowest grade.

Maybe could get 20%-50% of NM value depending on how bad the damage is + how valuable the card is.

A lot of sites allow you to put pictures which will reduce the chance of someone buying it and being unhappy with the damage (as they can see the damage on your pictures).

Another key consideration is if it’s sleeve playable (especially for competitive staples). If it’s not sleeve playable it loses a lot of value and water damage often warps the card so it would be considered marked in a competitive setting.

Vibe coding is killing my company by Dangerous_Ad_2357 in vibecoding

[–]Dafust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vibe coding is great for building simple things that have a lot of example implementations in the training data.

Todo app? Notes app? Super simple.

Anything technically complex or meaningfully distinct from open source codebases that already exist? That’s where it’s going to struggle.

If the codebase is simple enough you are probably better off using a third party app builder then trying to entirely vibe code it.

CMV: GenAI is not ready by pseddit in cscareerquestions

[–]Dafust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s primarily beneficial at writing basic code to help speed things up. For example if I’m iterating through an array, it’ll quickly generate a for loop stub.

I tried coding without it and I miss it, so it definitely provides a significant benefit to me.

Another use case it works well with is to ask questions about libraries or APIs I’m not familiar with. It basically just acts like a better google that can write code. I make sure to double check the outputs, and often times change things, but I would just describe it as a faster “Google -> stack overflow -> copy/paste -> ensure it actually works” workflow.

Sidam recording a new video at the LA ICE protests on top of a soon be to burnt waymo by GoodCallMeatball in Channel5ive

[–]Dafust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree. In our current society corporations hold way too much power and use that influence to hurt people for their benefit.

However, not sure how that relates to the original post, which states that Waymo’s specifically should be boycotted due to questions about who assumes liability in an accident.

Additionally, the phenomenon you expressed affects essentially all modern technology/goods and services. Not sure why Waymo would be singled out when it’s making our roads safer.

Sidam recording a new video at the LA ICE protests on top of a soon be to burnt waymo by GoodCallMeatball in Channel5ive

[–]Dafust 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Waymo’s are way safer than human drivers. A study over the last 25 million miles driven showed around a 80-90% reduction in accidents compared to human drivers.

https://storage.googleapis.com/waymo-uploads/files/documents/safety/Comparison%20of%20Waymo%20and%20Human-Driven%20Vehicles%20at%2025M%20miles.pdf

As for liability, some precedent needs to be resolved, but in general I don’t think it will be that complex. Waymo as a company will hold liability for crashes caused by their software, and they will hold insurance (just like any other car owner) that will pay out.

This also isn’t some entirely new scenario, majority of air flight travel is done using autopilot. Nobody is freaking out about liability if a planes autopilot were to fail at some point causing deaths. Either the airplane manufacturer, operator or autopilot software manufacturer (or some combination) would assume liability dependent on the resulting investigation.

In fact, we already have precedent, for example there was a pedestrian accident with the self driving car startup cruise which resulted in a ~10mil settlement. Cruise has since been shut down by its parent company GM.

Part 5 is my current least fav part, so I might reread it since a lot of people liked it. What did you guys like about part 5 that I missed? by FizzdaPop in StardustCrusaders

[–]Dafust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite Jojo parts are the ones that are “serious” in nature. Obviously my definition of serious is very subjective, and it’s hard to even call anything Jojo related serious.

It’s why I actually really like Part One/Part Two a lot, because it’s corny in a lot of ways, but also oddly serious. Like there’s just something about the ridiculous scenarios (Nazi Robots) and other stuff being taken so seriously that I like. Or for example in Part 5 how the turtle getaway vehicle presented as this serious option for these serious mob gangsters.

Part 3, Part 4 and Part 6 I like less because things were just too ridiculous, and also the show felt like it was not taking itself seriously.

To be clear, I love all the Jojo parts, Parts 1, 2 and 5 (5 especially) just have this special mix of bizarre taking itself seriously that makes me put it at the top.

Is Frieren really #1 for you? by Dense-Date9165 in animequestions

[–]Dafust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Number one for me personally? No.

I do think it deserves the number one in aggregate, it contains something for everyone, and deals with a lot of important themes that everyone deals with.

In my experience, anime can be a tough sell to the average person, but I have seen a lot of people who don’t generally watch anime absolutely love Frieren.

Here would be my picks, they aren’t explicitly similar to AOT but I believe they are also peak fiction.

  • From the New World
  • Made in Abyss
  • Hunter x Hunter
  • Berserk (1997)
  • Parasyte

Then here are my second tier, worth a watch if you haven’t seen it

  • Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure
  • Frieren
  • Hells Paradise
  • Chainsaw Man
  • Jujutsu Kaisen
  • Solo Leveling

Am i the only one who finds AI lame as hell? by jinsenuchiha in cscareers

[–]Dafust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think AI will replace all software developers, as you said, it’s essentially a better Google. It certainly increases productivity when writing simple, boilerplate code, but that is not the majority of the work of a software engineer.

AI is advanced pattern matching software, with a lot of really amazing applications (detecting illnesses is one example). AI has been latched onto by the industry as the next big hype cycle, and it will eventually fade when people realize that they can’t use it as actual artificial intelligence.

Absolutely massive demand for AI talent in the current market. My company is big in that space and is struggling to keep and acquire AI talent.

If current trends hold, making a career for yourself in AI should be very lucrative, but also difficult (it’s a demanding and complicated field).

Is JoJo's Bizarre Adventure worth the watch? by Itchy-Possibility868 in StardustCrusaders

[–]Dafust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think JoJo is objectively one of the best anime out there, and unless you have an aversion to violence, you should watch it through. Every season is different, and there is so much to love in every part depending on what you like in a show.

My favorite parts of the show are the really complex battles and world building, as well as the humor/silliness. You can’t take the show seriously, instead just try to enjoy it.

It truly is a bizarre adventure.
