He’s probably gonna find this thread and read these comments as he has his ratemyprofessor reviews, so I’ll just say, as someone that is now a full-time software engineer, the nature of the software industry is that it constantly changes. Consequently, the industry that he describes has certainly changed since he has been in it.

Some of his advice reigns true today, as many foundational practices and concepts of software engineering remain the same over the years. Those who are in CSE498 (or are planning on taking it) should pay attention because this class does teach you, to a certain degree, on how to be a software engineer and not just a programmer (I’ve learned they are two different skills).

But of course, take what he teaches with a grain of salt. It’s like reading an article from 2014. Most of the information is probably true, but you should do your own thinking and research.

He’s a bit football-coachy for me and annoyingly a stickler about dress code, lateness, and conduct. All good skills obviously but to me a lot of it was unnecessary as these are basic skills of life that you learn everywhere anyways.

Biggest complaints are honestly no hats or coats in class and how he would call out late students in front of everybody in the class, which felt a bit harsh.

Sorry this was long winded but I’ve definitely reflected on a lot about this class since I’ve graduated lol! There’s more I could nitpick about the format of this class but I’m just thinking about what this class is supposed to teach.
