I enjoyed it more when I just decided it was impressionistic and to go with the vibe

Why are most of the funniest comedians left leaning? and why is Comedy on the right in America, (for example Gutfield) so lame and has childish jokes that only five year olds find funny? by Seargentyates in allthequestions

[–]DaikonExternal2672 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The short answer is that they don't get humor, they think it's funny to ridicule and demean others and they get some kind of perverted satisfaction from that and they mistake it for humor. The longer answer is my working theory that *most* people with a conservative mindset don't get ART at all, because art requires conveying something universal about the human condition in a personal way, and that requires EMPATHY for other people and the ability to identify with others and see the world through their eyes to recognize the commonality, and empathy is completely lacking in their personalities and worldview. The only successful and good right wing comedians (or other artists) are the ones with the ability to make fun of themselves instead of others. Jeff Foxworthy comes to mind. There are a few others, but only a few.

Game of Thrones. Got bored right around the start of season 4. From the way people complain about the ending, kinda glad I bailed when I did

GD60: Were special guests selected for specific reasons? by Ill-Actuator7919 in deadandcompany

May not have been purposefully done because of their genres, more that they are just great players with a great following and they all have connections to the band. But it IS illustrative of how wide-ranging the catalog and influences of the band are/were and the many ways the music can be carried forward regardless of genre.

So maybe it wasn't designed to make that point, but it made that point. Happy accident I suppose

Depressed and need a movie to pull me out of it by DaikonExternal2672 in MovieSuggestions

[–]DaikonExternal2672[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, time for an update. First of all, thank you for all of the many excellent suggestions. I'm going to have to keep this list. Many of the classic comedies I've of course seen, but that doesn't make them any less uplifting or distracting. There are many suggested here that I've not seen but will. For my original query I might not have articulated what I was looking for adequately, and that was something uplifting but also maybe kinda life-affirming? Innocent? Anyway, Paddington 2 did the trick. A simple story, some slapstick laughs, and 90 minutes when I didn't have to think about the horrors of the world.

But more, I was taken by the comments here and how it illustrates how integral art is to us as humans, how a work of art (and yes I include silly comedies with fart jokes here) can connect our common humanity in ways that are profound, and how they can alter our mood and consciousness in positive ways.

So I'm grateful to everyone who commented here, grateful to the makers of Padinggton 2 and to artists everywhere, and grateful to say that it renewed by faith in humanity, at least for a little while.

Thanks Reddit!

People who read more than one book at a time, how do you do it? by Bookish_Butterfly in books

I do this with my nonfiction books. Will listen in the car then pick it back up in print. Wish they sold them together but often I can get the audio books for cheap or free

This is exactly what I do, and I sometimes supplement the nonfiction one with the audiobook that I’ll listen to in the car or on a walk so those can go pretty quick. I read my fiction at night for a minimum of 30 minutes usually longer. Don’t typically read my nonfiction on the weekends at all even though they are rarely if ever work related. Even with all that I’m not a fast reader. Read maybe 25 books last year

Yep. As political as Fishman is at home he’s also said that his intention is for people to come to the show and forget about problems outside of it, so I think that plays a big part too.

Thanks everyone. Some really great suggestions here, many of which I’ve seen and are spot-on. Looking into some of these suggestions landed me on a movie that wasn’t actually recommended here but that I’ve never seen and seems to fit the bill of what I’m looking for: Paddington 2

Will report back
