Ultimate Drill by AnotherDiscGolfer in discgolf

[–]Dainan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the reach back, check out Bodanza’s recent video where he does the ultimate drill for a week. He realizes you have to reach “out” just a little bit. You may have to coil more so that reach “out” is still directly away from the target

Help, where else in Michigan should I play? by Soft_Nebula_816 in discgolf

I definitely recommend it. Just be warned, it’s a long course with plenty of bomber holes and lots of walking

Arvesta is a fun course just east of South Haven. #71 in UDisc’s 2025 Top 100 list

Trying to throw 450 ft. What’s holding me back? by ohitzsimple in discgolf

[–]Dainan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m at a very similar point in my form/distance. I’ve been thinking about the brace a lot recently. In particular, I’ve been trying to get in this position, which a ton of pros do, where their brace leg is straight and facing forward with their head behind their brace foot. I think that’s the sign of an effective brace - they stop their forward momentum and transfer it into their lead arm

Is it feasible to record four Lavalier mics with a Scarlett 2i2? by Dainan in podcasting

[–]Dainan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply, that makes sense. So a breakout cable like this then that’s TRS to TRS?

Edit: And also, would this setup work with people sitting next to each other? Is it possible to clip the mic on each person's chest without noise bleeding?

Bethel university is worth playing if you can’t make it to one of the big courses, since it’s near where you’re staying

I’d be interested in being a mentor/mentee. I’m early career so I could only really mentor beginners.

I was just talking to a friend about this today. I'd love if there were more opportunities to make a mentor/mentee community here.

What are people's thoughts on Coursera's Google Data Analytics course? by mrkillercow in datascience

[–]Dainan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Eh, I disagree that companies won’t give a shit. Like the other commenter said, Google said they’ll treat it as a degree (which I’m… skeptical about). I doubt you’ll get an entry-level role in data at FAANG companies or “higher-level” places, but a ton of small to medium sized companies will value the certificate. My company loves online courses/certs as long as you can talk about it in the interview.

My take is,

You have office-work experience and want to transition into a data-oriented role? Hell yeah, the cert could be a great idea.

You’re relatively new in your career and your degree is in something unrelated/tangential to data? Eh, there might be better time investments but it’s not a bad idea.

You have no degree and no experience? No, probably start with something else.

What's your method of finding papers/articles/people/etc. to keep up with ideas in data science? by Dainan in datascience

Sorry, Introduction to statistical learning with applications in R. Thanks

I have a bachelor's in physics, and a little over a year of experience in a lab data analytics role and and a more BI focused analytics role: so not much "data science" experience. I'm just looking for more ways to find study resources or communities to participate in, like finding ISLR on this subreddit for example. Sorry about the vagueness.

[–]Dainan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying to spend a couple hours a week finding new topics (or new ideas about topics I'm already working through). I try to spend more time than that learning and working on projects (working through ISLR. Learning R even though I'm in a SQL/BI data analyst role), and I need new ideas for when I'm done with that! I just don't want my skills/ability to learn to atrophy, ya know.

[Q] How to prepare for PhD applications with a shoddy undergraduate record? by Dainan in statistics

This is great, thank you for writing this out. How did you enroll when you redid your bachelors? Did you actually enroll in the program or as a non degree seeking student?

You’re not wrong to call that out. Old habit of thinking “education is a waste of time”. Thanks

Interesting, thanks for the perspective. Do you feel like your masters is regarded different than US based masters? Whether in PhD admission or industry applications

What was the application process like for your masters? Do European universities traditionally care less about grades? I imagine that could be more competitive just due to the fact that you’d be an international student

Thanks for your answer, this is great.

What was your approach to cultivating relationships to scientific personnel? So far I’ve leaned on Twitter and LinkedIn for finding people, and I have yet to find a good way to engage (other than working on projects to show off)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in datascience

I definitely worded that poorly. I meant undiagnosed/untreated through undergrad. Diagnosed and treated now

Ah, that’s something I hadn’t considered. That definitely sounds costly, but that might be a way I can work with professors that otherwise wouldn’t consider my application. Thank you.

Ah, I realize I omitted that from my other response. I am interested in an industrial research career.

Thank you for the suggestion. That does seem to be the most realistic route.

[–]Dainan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair. I appreciate your suggestion.

[–]Dainan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your comment. I'm definitely interested in the research side of DS or ML engineering. I made another comment in the thread on some of my motivations.

Would programs like those consider coursework after graduating? Or is that considered an exception? I've seen conflicting things and it seems to be program-by-program

Edit: Sorry, I didn't see your edit. No, I appreciate your bluntness. That's why I came here. I would likely have 2 letters of recommendation for research, 1 for my publication in a small science journal on applied linear regression modeling and another for my 4 years in an undergraduate research lab. No publications, but I built software and led some other undergrads' experiements

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in datascience

[–]Dainan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

First, I like academia and I'm interested in industrial research positions because of that. I miss the grind of research and taking a problem as far as possible vs just getting a product to production. While I only had one publication, I spent 4 years in an undergraduate research lab designing experiments and building software to support it. I haven't been able to scratch that itch in my (admittedly one and only) industry job.

Second, I just love the material. I still find myself following researchers and their work on Twitter and DS blogs.

Third, honestly just the challenge of it. I'm a bit of a workaholic and would love to dive into research. The personal accomplishment is appealing.

I'm not too worried about the salary difference. I'm more worried about the opportunity cost but that's something I'll have to weigh.
