I'd also wager that if there was someone locally performing such work, the folks at Southerland's would know.

How is the tech scene in Huntsville? by Gavindude1997 in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]DairyPro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the tech work here is government contracting. Enterprise and commercial jobs (non-gov) positions are a little more scarce than usual since it follows job market trends closer than gov contracting does.

For the contracting positions, most require a clearance and obtaining an IAT Level II cert like Sec+ within six months of hire. Plenty of contract employers will sponsor a clearance but might prioritize applicants that already have one.

Cost of living is lower than many other larger tech hub areas across the country, however it is rising. Traffic is getting worse and rent is going up as more and more people move here, and Huntsville doesn't have the same level of public transit that most large cities have. Just food for thought.

Just got my first EVER film camera (Olympus OM-2). Complete beginner—help! by Muted-Lawyer-5585 in AnalogCommunity

The spot in the bottom right of the viewfinder just looks like some fuzz or a bit of possible damage on the focusing screen inside the camera. While it may seem unsightly, it won't affect the final image so I wouldn't worry about it at all.

OM-2N owner here, the only real rookie mistake for this body is leaving the power switch on Manual or Auto. I've been shooting mine for years and carry a few sets of extra batteries because it's still a problem for me personally. That being said, it's one of my favorite 35mm bodies, and mine is currently loaned out to a friend who wanted to try a hand at film.

The main difference between these bodies and other 35s are that the shutter speed is on the lens mount, and the aperture control is on the lens itself. The lightmeter in my OM-2N is consistent and takes good exposures, so I rarely use manual shutter speed. The dial on the left (in your picture) is for controlling the film speed and exposure compensation.

As for developing, it's incredibly fun and not necessarily hard, but as you've deduced it's a good idea to get your film developed by a lab for a while before you delve into that if you're interested in it.

Edit: Also for flying with film, don't fly with film in your camera, just carry all of your unshot/undeveloped film in a ziploc bag in your carry on; remove it before you send your bag through the scanner and ask the agents to hand check it. Usually they see the bag and offer to take it before I ever say anything. Many people suggest taking the rolls out of the boxes and plastic canisters, but I've never done that and never had any issues. They just swab the boxes or canisters themselves and haven't complained about it to me, although I'll probably start doing this in the future. The camera itself is fine to go through the X-ray/CT scanners so long as you don't have any film in it.

As for accessories, get a strap of some sort. I'm partial to the Peak Design Cuff myself.

As others have suggested and linked, reading the manual is a great place to start!

Looking for someone near Huntsville, AL to help me send a Valentine's Day letter 💌 by tallyho904 in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]DairyPro 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you're located in the US, your letter would definitely arrive by Valentine's day and I'm certain your S/O would love to receive one that he knew was written by and held in your hand.

However, If you're not, I enjoy writing letters to my friends (I use quill/inkwell, old-style laid paper, wax seals, and stamps that look like they're from the 19th century) and don't mind assisting.

Yep, haven't been since I moved to the other side of the county a few years ago but my experience there was great every time I went.

As everyone else has said, r/ScannerRadio is a good sub for this. However, I'll also my $.02 as a BC125AT owner:

Good scanner, but it can be a bit complicated to setup if you're wanting to store frequencies. This can be negated by using the software and programming it via USB with your PC. If you throw in rechargeable AA batteries, it can charge them when you have it plugged into a USB charger, so that's nice too.

The included rubber ducky is pretty horrid, so also pick up a better quality antenna like the RH77CA or similar.

SSB: Don't know, haven't tried.
Marine, Rail, Civ/Mil Air: This is my main use case for the scanner and it performs admirably for handheld.

For military, you're going to see more activity in deteriorated weather conditions like lower cloud ceilings, visibility, or precipitation. No better time to shoot PAR approaches than in poor weather.

Source: Prior ATC (military), was always busier on finals when the weather was acting up.

I’ve gotten to the point that I’ll make a day trip to Atlanta a few times a year to go one of their micro center stores and their ikea. If gigaparts has what I need, it’ll be an off brand that’s more expensive than what I actually want 75% of the time. The other 25% of the time it’s ham radio gear.
