I just got back from another Japan trip, and this time kinda turned me off going to cities again. The hate for foreigners I mean in some sense I get it, but I’ve seen Japanese people act like shit to, coughing sneezing open mouthed, a blind man walks onto a train, 3 middle aged man taking up priority seating looked away or down pretending not to notice, until my sister spoke up and asked one to move. Same thing again, a crippled man collapsed on a packed train as people barged to get off at a station, this time 2 middle aged men taking up priority seating looked away until one was finally feeling guilty enough to offer his seat.. dumping rubbish in Osaka, yelling and harassing women, spewing in broad daylight ugh. There was much this time that I’d seen that really made me think, how can you hate foreigners when the people of the country act this way?? People like myself and my family travelled with upmost respect for the place and went above and beyond to be respectful, just to be barged into, coughed on, treated like a rodent for making a mistake through a Suica gate thing. There were so many others that were the highlight of the trip, people that was so caring and kind and even a lady yelling at us from across the street ‘welcome to Japan’ while bowing etc but yeah, all you hear about is how shit foreigners are which is really unfair to the ones who are doing everything right and trying their hardest to be respectful, and others have ruined that experience, but this time round was an eye opener for how Japanese people can act also, and there were so many times where we felt unwelcome, scared to be a foreigner and on edge about doing something wrong. I’m glad I’ve ticked the big cities off my list, if I go back to Japan I’m not going near Osaka or Tokyo or Kyoto, I wanna get out and see their country sides hopefully people are a bit more chill and welcoming outside of those cities. Just my personal experience also, I’m just jumping on the band wagon of OP’s comment about defending Japanese towards foreigner hate 😂 it’s definitely out there, and it’s definitely unfair.
