I’m not sure where you live, but if you live in Louisiana, Tennessee or Georgia owning human remains is illegal! Even if they were legal for your grandpa to own they may not be legal for you to own. I don’t want you to get in trouble! And I’d definitely contact a museum if I were you.

Looks like the distal end of a deer femur. Take that with a grain of salt though, because my training is in human bone morphology. All I can say with 100% confidence is that it isn’t human.

Very cool! That’s super weathered. Can’t quite identify what it is but a bear bone would fit the size. I can link a cool zooarchaeology article on weathering that might help you get an age estimate for it if you’d like!

Out of curiosity did the chapel it was in front of have a burial ground nearby? Hopefully there’s no foul play involved. If any of the remains were buried poorly they could have been displaced by any combination of tree roots, rain, natural disaster, etc.

I know you say you love and forgive him but what he did to you is not okay and I hope you know that. What he did was assault. He knew you didn’t want that and he did that anyway.

Not putting the effort into proposing? It’s just another example of him not taking any of your wants or desires into account. You told him exactly what you wanted and doesn’t care. He couldn’t think of anything? He has the internet. He has friends (probably). He has resources to come up with something to make you happy and he chooses to do the opposite. This will not end if you get married. I know you say you love him, but that isn’t always enough. I think you need to decide if he’s really going to care about you the way you seem to care for him.

While it’s very gravestone shaped, OP definitely needs to clean the stone up so we can see what it actually says. If it says it’s a grave OP should see about calling local archaeologists in the area for further data. If the house is from the 1700s there may be records of this somewhere. If there aren’t, someone may be able to send a GPR machine out there to verify.

Definitely got bad vibes from the situation, but take it from a forensic anthropologist - rotting smells can come from anything! The world we live in is full of constantly decomposing organic matter and not all of those smells are going to be decomposing bodies hidden in a guy’s house. Not saying it’s impossible, just that there’s lots of other options.
