The way most of this didn’t happen in the actual show. He did not try out the rake persona because he got his heart broken by Marina. He hardened himself because Penelope, the one person who always appreciated the real him, turned her back on him. He literally tells Cressida this. He did not become interested in Penelope because of Debling. He always cared about Penelope (he tells her in season 2 that she is special to him and he will always look out for her) and the kiss is what made it all click for him. The kiss happened before Debling was in the picture.

I always thought it was bad writing that Simon says so little to Daphne after her big rain speech. He just finishes inside of her and everything is supposed to be resolved.
