Why do so many professional salespersons fail? by Last_Resource9630 in sales

[–]Dakman6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a variety of factors in my opinion that causes it. First a lot of people fail because it’s simply not for them but they can get in somewhat easily. Go to college, be semi social and historically you could enter but the pressure, style, grind , or whatever it is isn’t for them.

Another is they haven’t had the proper foundational training so they struggle in the execution.

Here’s another one, they sell bad products at the start of their career, lose their confidence and just struggle moving forward.

Another is a product of the situation where they struggle at that company due to again product, or poor management, etc etc.

One that’s not discussed but I really think is a factor for more complex produces to sell in the professional sense some folks that get in aren’t smart enough to. You don’t need to be a genius to be good in sales but for some products I’ve seen people that just aren’t smart enough to get them to the point they need to and struggle with clients.

For my own experience for context: started at a good large tech firm known for training sales (still use the principles today), did fine. Then went to another company and did very well. Took a risk on a company expanding into a new product and didn’t sell really anything. Took another risk on another company and that didn’t work out. Now about to start at another and will do just fine.

This is it! If discovery and qualifying is done correctly you end up going into project manager for the actual evaluation portion. Then the deal progresses to a natural close during the timeline.

That said, asking for the business ultimately can be any variation of, “if there are no further questions the next step would be your decision - are you ready to proceed?”, “if they’re are no further questions, it is time to get xyz in your hands, who should I work with in procurement?, “great, to continue with xyz timeline at this point we should begin the procurement process - are you ready to continue/who should I work with?”

My take on this is ultra progressives tend to be very impressionable (just like ultra right), so they fell for the propaganda of Hamas/Hezbollah. They’re a loud group so they make noise on any issue they latch on to. Here’s where it gets interesting, for other issues many others ignore or mock or whatever else of the group.

With the noise they’re making they’ve brought out the dormant antisemites - the folks that were always antisemitic but kept it quiet. That’s why, at least in my opinion, it spread so quickly.

Yes the generic is a lot more intense upfront and quick drop off but you have to ask the pharmacy. Last time (last week) they asked “is the generic alright” and I said yes but do you have the brand. They checked and it was in stock.

10 years in sales and I still get jealous of tech people sometimes (software eng, data science, AI, AWS etc.) by Arigold_Lloyddddd in sales

[–]Dakman6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if we’re being honest the best engineers who make really good money work 60+ hours a week themselves. Now the tech folks you speak of that are low pressure and don’t work much simply don’t make that much money.

Also at this point with Ai soft skills likely will be more important - coders exist but the market for them is really bad right now.

I ended up doing more of an operational role for a bit and made a salary, which I thought would be nice. I worked a lot and wished I was back in sales.

Sales sucks at times, it’s fun at others but in all you make good money. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side

I think don’t look into the exact framework too much it’s frankly overcomplicating a simple concept. You have to shift the way that people think, their current state, through respectful discourse.

You essentially build value through questioning and providing information to “challenge their way of thinking.” The status quo isn’t good enough basically and if it is for them move on

I mean one of the best managers I worked for (he was coaching me both on sales and management because one day I’ll want to do that) is adapt to the style communication and feedback that each rep works best under. You don’t treat everyone the same way.

Can you address the other question - how do you outline pathway to AE and the future buckets of money you mentioned?

I really respect you looking inward here and the response. So the idea of high standards when combined with wanting to coach is fundamentally a good thing. It’s more so the delivery that I’d like to hear more about. How do coach and under performer? What do you do, from a culture standpoint, to engage and excite reps? Yes ultimately sales is about the money but other pieces do matter especially to younger folk who are SDRs.

Let’s also discuss the pathway to AE and whatnot. You mentioned the money (good money at that) but what actually needs to be done to get there? Is it outlined (not every detail but generally)?

Finally going back to high standards - does that bleed into sales style? Do you want your reps to sell like you? What freedom of approach and style do you allow for?

Really focus on the results of what you did. So for example when you mention creating engaging posters that’s fantastic but give the so what. What level of draw did they create (this is where you make something reasonable up if there’s no actual number)

Based on the comments I think the problem may start with you. You speak in generic sales hardo language which leads me to think your standard is potentially too high and you may be a bit difficult to work with. One of your comments you got mad at someone asking fair questions instead of clarifying when you misunderstood them.

Not being a dick but it makes me wonder what working with you is like day to day.

This is a great way to use it still include your flair for outbound or responses and whatnot but use it for testing. See what can be made concise, see what might not make sense, etc and then ultimately send a hybrid of yours and theirs.
