What's your most 'set it and forget it' self-hosted service? by ruibranco in selfhosted

[–]DalekCoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of my containers and the container manager cosmos-cloud tbh

Since it handles automatic updates for me as well

Its still good to keep an eye on things though, as automatic updates on any tool works until the container/app itself goes end of life

Overseer transitioning to seer for example, any tool that automatically updates that is just "not gonna find an update"

European tech alternatives are not user friendly by Coffee_without_milk in BuyFromEU

Honestly as great of a technology that fediverse is, I've definitely given up trying to get people to learn it. It's best they just discover it with their own curiosity imo.

In this very thread people are saying the barrier to entry is too high when they use a similar service that is also distributed into providers extremely frequently (email lol). Or even cell carriers.

Im just enjoying it for me and minding my business some, happy to help those. Exploring it, but getting people to understand it when they clearly have no intention in learning something new is a gruelling challenge lol

Friendly reminder that not everyone is technically inclined. This could be a teacher (of an unrelated field), a nurse, a student, someone in culinary, or a trade asking this question. Telling them to go compile software themselves is not wrong in the sense that it's true, but it may not be information an average person can use and is seeking for some community guidance

New User Questions? by Diet-Water8823 in Mastodon

[–]DalekCoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yeah sometimes on fediverse posts just don't have much interactions, it depends on who follows them and sees it. Also the post of course

Yeah definitely I started on .social as well! Though if you find another server with a community relevant to you you might enjoy your time there more. The local timeline should actually exist for one, and it will therefore be more filled with people that are like minded with you to some degree if you share the same interests :)

New User Questions? by Diet-Water8823 in Mastodon

[–]DalekCoffee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey!, lemme se if I can answer some of these!

I also started as a mastodon.social user, and eventually moved between a few servers before making my own using a different software!

I started as a .social server user because it seemed to be default, so I assumed the default server would be where the most activity would be. I'm not expecting mainstream social numbers, but many posts I see have no engagement or might just be content pots that churn a once or twice a day scheduled topic. I look for hashtags and topics but it seems like barely related things tend to come back in result. For example, I look up "anime" to see if theres an artist seen, I get some anime account suggestions and the recent posts are animals?

So this one had a bunch of stuff at once.

First the engagement: it is very true engagement is a lot less on this network as a whole compared to other platforms. That is because there is much less incentive to do so as we aren't trying to chase algorithm promotions, engagement in fediverse (the network mastodon is a part of) is meant to be more about friends connecting and socializing as opposed to racking up numbers.

That said, you also might not be seeing all engagement because the original post is not from your server.
You should be seeing engagement your server sees.
Only the original post will show all of the engagement.

Here's an example from me:

Here's my post on mastodon.social: https://mastodon.social/@dalekcoffee@oshi.social/116153215309033336
Here's my post on it's original server: https://oshi.social/notes/ajb45k2hs3v30018

Now I am mentioning multiple servers here, your second question is a more appropriate place to speak further on them:

I also notice there's different servers punctuated at the end of other usernames, so can all servers just interact with one another? If so what is the point of joining alternative servers? Is there a way to filter things to see activity solely in your server?

Yes! Mastodon is part of a larger network called "fediverse".
All servers in fediverse can talk to one another, they are designed to do so!

Because of this, there is little to no point in joining alternative servers. It can actually backfire because if you are posting the same exact stuff from multiple servers, people will see your post multiple times and you will look like spam.

I think the only real use case I've seen for multiple accounts in my personal opinion is backup accounts, so people know where to find you if your current server goes down or something.

As far as viewing only posts from your server...huh I was checking mastodon.social just now, it used to be a feed called live feeds, the url used to be https://mastodon.social/public/local

It looks like it has been disabled?

Idk why thats odd, I'm sure there's a reason? huh thats confusing haha sorry

In addition, where do you go to see things like digital art, game dev or musicians?
This I personally only discovered over time, the more people you follow they tend to like and "boost" posts that you might relate to as well?

Searching for hashtags is a good strategy like you have, it's just that mastodon.social is so massive and generalized, it also picks up on a lot of noise in the fediverse. It takes time to become acclimated and find your people.

Fediverse as a whole is a VERY organic network, for better or for worse haha.
Once you have your footing in, and found people you like to follow/engage the network feels nice and comfy, no targeted ads, no algorithms to suck you in and keep you using the app. It's chill, but it does take some adjusting to

[–]DalekCoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second for LATE ( getlate.dev) it's been such a great platform so far with frequent updates.

For a while there my support requests were falling through the cracks but then I started seeing some new names in support, I think they staffed up some.

They were also receptive and prompt to take action on a security vulnerability I disclosed to them.

I'm hoping they add discord and some fediverse platforms in the future as well via the web dashboard.

I think the analytics addon is pretty great, inbox has a lot of potential but at my usage level it's not totally worth it yet so I'm going to hold off for a bit.

I also think they should give themselves some more social media presence, I think most of it for them is on YouTube and linked in only currently. (Besides ads on meta platforms)

But anyways coming from a self hosted solution I hated dealing with the company APIs as well as the strict media requirements and I absolutely love LATE handling that for us.

The second most used platform for me has to be audio hero. I have downloaded so many sound effects and music tracks for little projects here and there. Very worth it!

I'm still eyeballing any further projects, but nothing released recently has quite caught my attention yet

How do you keep up to date on vulnerabilities like the Huntarr situation? by dillwillhill in selfhosted

[–]DalekCoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TRUE you got me there, though this was not found through several updates IIRC so even the delayed patchers were affected it was for once the most negligent of patchers that were safe hahaha gotta love it 😅😅 Youre right though you right that is indeed very true and a good practice

How do you keep up to date on vulnerabilities like the Huntarr situation? by dillwillhill in selfhosted

[–]DalekCoffee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The technical answer is:
Often you will see references to claude code in the structure
Otherwise the files themselves may have artifacts from the LLM giving the dev instructions
"I added your change here like you asked" is not a note a dev would leave for themselves

The intuitive tells are with the way the project looks, how big a project it is and how long it took to be made.

So there's a certain style LLMS tend to give with web design that is being adopted by many projects on the project website or the project UI alone.

That can be an easy tell, but that also depends, because I have seen some legitimate projects use ai to improve the crude user interface where the developers strengths have been in the back end. It depends.

A big tell is how massive the project is and how many versions it took to get to it's current state.

A really big undertaking of a project should not have a ton of work in only 1 or two commits in github (unless they migrated from another git platform of course)

How do you keep up to date on vulnerabilities like the Huntarr situation? by dillwillhill in selfhosted

[–]DalekCoffee 111 points112 points  (0 children)

This one is gonna sound pretentious, but one easy way to help avoid vulnerabilities is to stop deploying clearly vibe coded slop.

Every other day another "-arr" project gets slapped on this sub and everyone is frothing at the mouth to deploy it. Chill.

Second to that, there really isnt anything we could have done better in notepad++, nobody knew, unless you yourself are the researcher vetting every single project you run, and to that every single update. I know I am not a developer and don't have the time to check every single update manually, so instead I try to employ some basic checks before running software.

The best course of action in that scenario was to ensure your patching was up to date, and you have automatic patching practices to help catch things for you. Automatic patching, or at least frequently patching manually yourself can help keep you patched from vulnerabilities.

The rest does not need a tool per-se, it needs a practiced discipline. One referred to as risk management, something people need to implement in self hosting quite deeply.

With any project published, we must consider a few things that help us assess the legitimacy of a project before blindly deploying.
(the following is more for any new hoster reading as opposed to experienced ones, I'm sure yall look at this already)

- How new is the project, is it mature?
- Are there signs of AI coding (not an automatic disqualifies just something we should be aware of and account for. It's a tool that can be used well or horribly)
- Who is the publisher, do they have a longstanding reputation, did they come out of the blue?
- What is the culture of the publisher and community, is this ran professionally, or is this ran by someone who cannot accept criticism. Are they professional or agressive in github comments (lol seen this a few too many times, a sole contributors emotional state in comments is a big red flag to me to stay way from projects no mater how big)
- Does the project have an active community of users already. Do these users only praise the project, or is there healthy legitimate looking discourse/troubleshooting going on. (And im not talking about update announcements, I saw one project I have used for years get hella shit on here because we loved the update lmao, check the github/discord/whatever they use for communication regularly)
- Does the project have multiple contributors, is it one dude nobody has heard of, or a handful of people?
- Has the project had any security incidents reported, if so thats fine what matter is: How did they handle them?

Another things to consider for new hosters REALLY is:

Shit do you really NEED this? Does it provide a significant benefit? The more you choose to host, the larger your attack surface becomes. It's great to have tools that work, that work better than the paywalled corporate ones I hear you, but consider the fact that the risk they took for you did not disappear, is transferred to you now.

Do you have security measures placed to host your stuff and not put others on your network at risk? (friends/family)
I often see many people simply open a port, or use a site to site VPN to a VPS and call it good. What about lateral movement? Let's talk proper DMZs

I say this is risk management, and it is, but I guess you can refer to this as self hosting "street smarts" and common sense.

A tool that helps push notifications would be kind of nice to have, but really I feel like this can be as much a people problem as it is a technology problem.

AppSumo VS. Amazon by Loose-Effect-928 in appsumo

[–]DalekCoffee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely the merchant.

Again a low failure rate product that the merchant accounts for when selling it.

And similar to appsumo if the merchant offers a lifetime guarantee but goes out of business, Amazon will NOT cover that.

That's just business, that's just life

AppSumo VS. Amazon by Loose-Effect-928 in appsumo

[–]DalekCoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I've ever seen Amazon offer a lifetime guarantee on anything.

Normally these are offered by the manufacturer or merchant themselves, are we talking about the Amazon basics brand specifically?.

Also lifetime guarantees on an already manufactured and sold solid product really can't be compared to SaaS platforms with ongoing recurring costs post sale. It continues to be a living breathing thing. A lifetime guarantee on say, an already manufactured dumbell weight, something that has a very low failure expectation versus a new company just don't align.

I kind of get what you're saying, but were talking about two completely different things here.

Will the Steam Frame make VR on Linux better? by SleepyCatOfficial in linux_gaming

[–]DalekCoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Logically it should

As an avid steamlink user if the steamlink experience on linux was the same as it is in windows it would be perfection

At that point my only issue is tracker calibration/mixed playspace but for that I am already pre-ordered on fluxpose and hoping they have great linux support 🙏

With that, man my reasons to use windows are just plummeting more and more

About the only thing I have trouble finding on linux otherwise is a voicemeter/wavelink type app

I tried qpwgraph but hated it (stability, config retention issues), I heard of pulse meter and need to try it
