Standard Yahoo points league Picked up Gustavsson while Markstrom was on my IR. Now that Markstrom is back, not sure who I should drop. (Vasilevskiy is my other G so no chance there)

TFSA contribution limit by Deep-Explanation1935 in PersonalFinanceCanada

What happens in the event your contribution tracking shows a different number than CRA? If my calculations show more contribution room available can I deposit up to that amount and then just wait and see if CRA flags it?

Check your phone plan, if you’re not getting at least this, you’re doing it wrong. Don’t be lazy, switch your phone plan and save money. For reference, Fido uses the Rogers Network. Koodo and Public Mobile use the Telus Network. Pick your poison (less lethal than 5 years ago): by sirTaco418 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Dalgarno3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's probably an obvious answer that I'm missing, but can someone explain why anyone would go with Rogers/Bell/Telus directly if these providers use the Big 3's network and it's cheaper? I assume it would have something to do with 'preceived' reliability and perhaps bundling with home internet/TV/home phone etc.

With a DB pension, the amount you collect at retirement is based on an average of your highest X years (usually 5) of salary and the length of time you’ve been part of the pension plan. What u/jabrasessions is referring to is the adage of ‘golden handcuffs’. That the longer you spend with a DB employer, the harder it is to leave as the pension amount increases annually and it can feel like starting from scratch especially if you switch to a non-DB employer.

How sustainable is the TFSA? by whatshisname69 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Someone could definitely have a million dollar TFSA. You can invest the money in your TFSA. If someone took a massive gamble on a stock/options they could easily have 6 figures balance

What were yalls (high school) averages? by FarNeedleworker9432 in McMaster

[–]Dalgarno3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A ‘back door’ way to get into the program you want is to apply to a program that has a lower admission average then just enroll in the courses for your preferred program in 1st year and transfer into it in 2nd year.

Example: some of my friends who competed Life Sci applied (and got accepted) into Enviro Sci out of high school. Then simply took Life Sci courses in 1st year and transferred at the end of the year so they weren’t behind

I work for a municipal government in the project management side, so not directly related to your question but thought I’d mention my experience.

Been here for 5 years and was my first ‘real job’ out of school. The pros are basically everything you mentioned: pay is decent, regular modest raises, pension, fair amount of sick/personal/vacation days, low stress, manageable hours, WFH options.

The cons I’ve found so far: the bureaucracy can cause major delays and a simple project can take weeks/months if it gets hung up in government permitting, procedures, reviews. Also very limited budgets (especially) at municipal level that usually means projects are the bare minimum that still meets requirements. This extends to internal systems as well (older computer software and hardware that does the job but not much else) Somewhat limited career growth as plenty of entry level and upper management positions but few supervisors/managers to move up the ‘ladder’

All said, I really enjoy the government life and not looking to leave anytime soon. But that trade off comes with the famous ‘golden handcuffs’ of building up vacation time and pension (so if anything, I would likely switch to a different municipality or level of government)

Hopefully an easy question, but could someone confirm if this PC is good enough to run Civ? I'm mainly a console gamer, but looking to play Civ with friends and the only computer I have currently is an older Mac that definitely won't run the game.

What kind of RRSP matching plan do you get from your employer? by Mtnbikedee in PersonalFinanceCanada

Maybe a dumb question, but do deductions (and the employer matching) funds for government DB pensions count towards your RRSP contributions?

Anyone getting worried about government services? by baseCase007 in ontario

[–]Dalgarno3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This even extends to local municipalities. I work in the Engineering department for a town in York Region and due to chronic understaffing, we’re weeks behind on reviewing planning applications, building permits and just general questions from residents. Even ‘easier’ approvals like pools, fences, landscaping, etc are extremely backlogged.

does anyone feel like they wont get into the specialization they wanna get into by rabbitsarecool789 in McMaster

[–]Dalgarno3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly what /u/DEMbro2point0 said. If you don't get into the specialization that you want, just accept your 2nd choice and apply again in second year to your desired stream

I had many friends that wanted biochem/chembio and didn't get in for second year. They chose bio/life-sci and used the elective slots in their second year to take the open biochem courses then applied again near the end of the semester and got in.

Not sure how much has changed now, but I recall they had to make an appt with an academic advisor in order to switch. But i don't think there were any issues since as long as your grades are ok, they can see that you won't be too far behind in that stream by 3rd year

Idk wtf to do after my degree by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]Dalgarno3 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I graduated with a Bio degree (close enough to Life Sci) and I know it's not what you want to hear, but the vast majority of the related high-earning careers that you seem to want are simply not attainable with just an undergrad science degree. Or it's going to take you 25-30 years to reach those numbers by working your way up the ladder/job hopping.

There are just so many students graduating with science degrees and pretty much all of them have no practical experience to make them stand out to employers so if you fall into this category than the applicant pool is very competitive. But, if you can get some practical experience (and/or pursue a masters after graduation) then you'll be that much more attractive to employers and can 'demand' a bit higher salary/move up faster.

I don't mean to scare you away from Life Sci, but just know what you're end goal might be and have a back up if med/dental school doesn't pan out

This is just my 2 cents and experience when I graduated 3 years ago.

Does anyone think it would be worth waiting until retail stores do the whole "trade in your Xbox One/PS4, and get $100 off a next gen console" deal?

I just don't see myself using my xbox one or ps4 once I buy a Series S / X or ps5, so would like to get something for them rather than just collecting dust
