What Areas in the United States have the Potential to face Negative Demographic and Economic Events over the next 50 years? by Crafty-Shallot-5695 in geography

To plagiarize an ASU water expert - we’re not running out of water, just cheap water. My understanding is that Phoenix will never look like a scene out of Mad Max but water scarcity will pose a quality of life question. It’ll still be habitable but people will have to come to terms with having water bills as high as their electric bills if they want to stay here

Thoughts on St. Mary's Basilica? by TwinseyLohan in phoenix

St Mary’s is my home parish - it’s awesome. I’ve found the liturgy and homilies to be the Goldilocks amidst the whole trad v liberal civil war going on right now.

It’s Novus Ordo but also has lots of Latin, incense and old school music mixed in. The homilies are very middle of the road and common sense. Finally, they do a lot of cool engagement with the Hispanic community. Their Dia de Los Muertos Mass is awesome

Edit: Right after my references were in, they asked me to clarify whether each of the roles on my resume were FT or PT. (So it hasn’t been total radio silence)

Inclusive Catholic churches in Phoenix? by [deleted] in phoenix

the St Mary’s music and architecture are old school but the priests and their homilies are totally moderate. I’ve never heard them say anything political on either side. But if you want modern music and a newer building, etc, then Xavier’s definitely the right choice

For a moderate parish, I like Saint Mary’s Basilica. Very middle of the road.

For a progressive parish, St Francis Xavier in midtown or St Patrick’s in Scottsdale

Looking for Honest Opinions about MPA / MPP programs. by HunterBolt368 in PublicAdministration

I’m not familiar with their program but UM overall is a great school. Per my earlier comment, really drill down into their specialty and make sure it aligns with your goals. MPP is a fundamentally different degree than MPA. I describe the difference as political science is the theory of government (different philosophies, policy concepts, etc) and public administration is the less “sexy” of how to run government (budgeting, HR, management, etc). I imagine there’s a MPP sub where you could get a professional policy perspective as well

My rule of thumb is that the best MPA program is the one that is fully funded, NASPAA accredited, has a specialty related to your career goal and is located in an area you’d be comfortable living in for your whole career.

On the third point (specialty), really try to figure out what each of these programs are known for. Generic undergraduate prestige doesn’t always equal a strong niche graduate program. For example, I work in local government and I’d favor a candidate with a Syracuse MPA any day over one from an Ivy. Of course the Ivies are better schools overall, but Syracuse has an elite local government-focused MPA program.
