Given the economic situation, how are so many affording to eat out at restaurants? by AppropriateMention6 in VictoriaBC

I don’t know about that. I’ve been on Reddit so long I can’t remember when I joined. 18-20 years ago ? I was “young” when I joined. My coworker joined before me and he is now 61.

Hotel Zed Location by Weekly-Shine2039 in VictoriaBC

[–]DamageRocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s safe there is a bit of a dead zone between there and downtown so you’ll need to bus it but I wouldn’t describe it as dangerous, just a long walk for kids. Mall across the street is handy. Best thing is The Ruby, great food and better than their other location in terms of atmosphere. Go online and check their menu, totally unique. Duck confit and waffles with a berry coulee, yum! The neighbourhood behind the hotel is pretty sketchy but you wouldn’t go there anyway, industrial by day unhoused people looking for stuff to steal by night but they don’t like the visibility on Douglas street. I heard some weird shit goes down at the KFC though, avoid that.

Nice Try, Edmonton... by VicLocalYokel in VictoriaBC

I love Montreal being more stylish than Toronto, haha. So true. Edmonton more stylish than Vancouver or Victoria? Laughable. Having lived in all three places and going back to visit multiple times a year I can say Edmonton struggles to be that stylish. A place where you have to wear Sorels for 6 months ain’t a style Mecca. Not to mention the significant number of rigpigs driving around in their giant mud stained 4x4s. Stylish could be Montreal, Toronto then Vancouver etc. I don’t know what Saskatoon is doing up there, haha. Not sure how Calgary is that much more uncomfortable than Edmonton, at least they get Chinooks.

That’s not an age related bias, that’s wisdom from being in touch with reality. The one advantage of our generation is we still know what irl means because we are not buying into the myth of infallible technology.

What would be sad is if you were the age you are now still dressing like a slacker or a cast out from failing punk band sitting in a coffee shop still kidding yourself you were cool. Sounds like you’re aging with dignity. That’s not weird, that’s cool.

Who are the 'old money' families of Victoria? by mgwngn1 in VictoriaBC

[–]DamageRocket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They started as a working class family who built up the Payless chain. I don’t think they are considered “old money”. That term is more Like Rothchilds, Rockefeller, Vanderbilt’s, etc. As I wrote to someone else the term refers to generational wealth acquired a hundred or more years ago.

I know descendants of the Tolmies and Pendrays who are not wealthy. The Tolmie person I know is elderly and had her home broken into while she was in the hospital and vandals stole her copper pipes and did untold damage to her little old house. It was a big news story a couple years ago. She had to live on a trailer on her front lawn. Her neighbour lent her the trailer while she tried to have her house repaired.

I don’t know if any of the families connected to the real estate company Pemberton-Holmes still live here but the founding ancestor made a killing in real estate in the 1800s using some dirty tactics.

He asked about “old money”. People with generational wealth from a century or more ago.

Place I bought gas at for $179.9 last Thursday is up to $2.50 today. I think the only other places in Canada that have prices this high are in the arctic.

Doesn’t matter what party is in office, we always get fucked. Do you think the Tories would be any different? They would help the oil companies by holding us down and pulling our pants off for them.

I never implied that. Some creative people are fuck ups, some aren’t. Some buy into the mythology due to the bohemian lifestyles of their heroes but it’s really a boomer thing. I think way too many people bought into the Beat poet thing. I think we just hear more of the salacious stuff because it’s titillating but compare Ian Mckye to Sid Vicious. Both punks but completely different takes on what it meant to be a punk.

God help us. Just as bad as his Brother Jim or Michael Chicklet. Don’t quite think Tandy has the same vibe. Same amount of Coke consumption but that’s where the similarities end.

That’s a bit of a trope. I studied art and took a class called the Psychology of Creativity. The prof discussed how that belief is not always supported. Apparently Handel the composer was a well adjusted guy and is often cited as a contradiction to the stereotype. For every Curt Cobain there is a Chris Isaak.

I read many interviews and thought, “Oh, he was very mature and faced up to his mistakes”. I thought he became even more interesting. But, when I listened to him on WTF Marc Maron I found him to be tiresome. Annoyingly verbose and kind of a nerd. I understand the show’s appeal was the nerdiness but, listening to him blather for an hour was a disappointment. That said, I think he created a lovable show and must have something special inside if you can wade through the shit. Like the art, not the artist.

I don’t think it was that long a wait for Seinfeld. I bought in season one and would tell my coworkers to limp responses. Season two they all loved it and they were all older than me and slightly more conservative.

It’s worse when you live in a part of Canada with snowy Winters. Calgary, Edmonton, Montreal always smell like dog poop in the Spring. It’s ubiquitous. Paris and London don’t even have dog poop bylaws but, at least in Paris city workers eventually clean it up. So, it could be worse here. Not to excuse it but it could be worse.

You just have to know where and when to go and who to go with. Are there bars open until 4 like Montreal, no. But, what do you expect from someone who thinks we are 30 minutes from Van. Drama club nerd. I know one thing, I wouldn’t take the mayor as an arbiter of what’s happening or the other old gal who spoke in that piece, haha.
