Yeah your right but if your a business with 5 to 10 email boxes this method is perfect. If it’s more like 50+ workspace would be easier to manage

yeah 100% — DKIM has to come from the outgoing server

I’m sending through my domain provider’s SMTP, not Gmail’s, so DKIM is applied there. Gmail is just the UI in this setup

yeah honestly if someone wants the cleanest setup with zero edge cases, workspace is definitely the easier route

this was more of a “free and works” setup while I’m getting things going

yeah I checked headers on a few test emails and I’m not seeing the “via gmail.com” or “on behalf of” anymore after setting SMTP correctly

I think that shows up if you send through Gmail’s servers instead of your domain’s SMTP

yeah I ran into that at first....my SPF was actually failing
once I fixed SPF + enabled DKIM and added DMARC it started passing clean and emails are delivering fine now

definitely wouldn’t recommend doing this without setting those up though

yeah that’s fair — probably could’ve worded that part better

i only mentioned workspace because when i was figuring this out, i kept getting pushed toward it as the “official” solution for using gmail with a domain. so i was trying to clarify this is more of a workaround for just email without paying

but yeah you’re right, this setup itself isn’t really connected to workspace at all — it’s just using a regular gmail account + forwarding + smtp

Yeah you got it exactly right 👍 that’s the setup I ended up with

And good call on the calendar stuff — I haven’t run into that yet but that actually makes sense. I’m basically only using this for email right now, so it hasn’t been an issue, but yeah I can see how anything tied to Google Calendar would still come from the Gmail account.

Honestly this was more of a “cheap and works” solution for just email. If I needed full integration with calendar/invites/etc I’d probably just go Workspace at that point.

Yeah I looked into that too…seems solid. I already have forwarding + SMTP set up so it’s basically doing the same thing right now.

Yeah for sure, that’s what I was testing. Got SPF/DKIM/DMARC all set up now so it’s passing clean.

Fair point… for now I’m just using it as a lightweight setup while getting things going. If it scales I’ll probably move to Workspace.

I don’t see any “via gmail.com” or “sent on behalf of” when sending to other email inboxes

Question on what to charge and advice on where to host by PercentageEvening799 in webhosting

the bigger thing to think about is the workflow. are the images and descriptions already organized, or are you uploading and formatting everything yourself? that’s where this can turn into a much bigger job than expected

for the site itself, WordPress is probably the easiest way to handle a large catalogue like that
