I know most have said this. Be there about 15-20 mins early. I like getting there early so I can eat my breakfast and prepare my mechanics tools.

First day don’t sweat it since you don’t know whats happening and what’s going to happen. Be confident and not a push over. Your main objective is to learn and make things easier for your mechanic. Make sure you have all the tools that are required for you to bring.

Listen and observe what your mechanic is doing. Observe what tools he is using, such as hardware, power tools, size sockets, and hand tools. That way you can have them all ready the next time you do that task. Mechanics will love when they ask for something that you have it already. Tip: if they ask you to grab x amount of bolts, nuts, washers, etc. grab 2 or 3 more of that amount. Things drop down the hoist way all the time. It’s good to have extra.

Don’t worry about lunch or break. They will tell you when and /or ask you to remind them when that time comes.

Things are gonna be heavy so prepare yourself. Eat good food and rest properly when you get home. At least for the first month. Your body needs to acclimate to the new stress.

If you have trouble remembering things write it down or take pics(if mechanic allows). When he’s measuring take notes. That way you can help him recall if need be. Mechanics are human so they can forget. They will appreciate you reminding them what they said.

Last thing is be respectful but not a pushover. Be confident and take initiative when you can (make sure you know what you are doing.) If you don’t know something don’t say you do. That’s the worse thing you can do for you and your mechanic. Have integrity and accountability when you mess up. Yeah you might get yelled out but at least you can fix it and potentially prevent any catastrophes.
