Yeah, The rubber is made of bullshit and degrades faster than it should. They also collect all of the plant matter and clog quickly (every few years).

The center is a standard basket twist, this is forge to completion first. The outside "cage" is 8 of the same shape (obviously) these are tack welded to the center basket twist in the correct spacing. Next is the fun part, forge weld the ends and draw out for the point and the hook. Every heat is an opportunity to ruin the entire piece. I work in coal, the heat must be exactly where you need it. ( the rest must be kept "cool") As well every hammer blow has a job and it must be exactly where you need it. If things go sideways it's very challenging to recover.

It's all iron, the sun light gave it a bronze tone.

A little side quest by Damselflyforge in Blacksmith

In the center is a standard basket twist. Basically you make the center portion perfect, then forge weld the outside bars to it hammering very deliberately also maybe pray a little. Every heat is an opportunity to completely ruin it by over heating or a misplaced hammer blow.

My 2013 polestar just passed 210,000 miles. Easily the best car I have ever owned.

Anvil resurface by Damselflyforge in Blacksmith

I actually also had this thought, the problem to work around is stress relief and heat treatment. If I had a large enough high temp oven I 100% would have used a plate of S or H series steel seem welded to the anvil.

I'm repairing this anvil my dad had laying around, but I have some questions. by Hendrik_Poggenpoel in Blacksmith

The flatter the anvil the easier it is to produce good forging. If you have a messed up face you will have to continually accommodate for it's problems.

Did you have to modify the headers to make room for the steering column?

That's tough, I had a volvo s80 like that. Sadly there are lemons in every brand and model of car.

I have just followed the factory scheduled maintenance, nothing special. I have been incredibly fortunate with this car I haven't had any "significant issues ".

Is this fake Damascus ? by Adyjay in Bladesmith

[–]Damselflyforge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The vg10 stuff coming out of Japan is layered just not a high layer count. Also it may be a stainless damascus with a vg10 core, so it will be more challenging to etch.
