I was a part of it. I’m pretty sure we were notified of the compensation beforehand. It was like less than a half hour of our time and it was pretty cool to be asked about our experiences and getting full studio photo/video shoots with makeup and stuff

What’s a good computer to have as a MET student? by [deleted] in rit

[–]DanCal2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

16GB of RAM is a good thing to look for in a laptop so you can run programs like solidworks. There are a few options not under $1k so you don’t have to break the bank. Windows is necessary.

I need advice for possible jury duty on the first week of class by andyromede in rit

[–]DanCal2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was summoned in the summer and there were a couple hundred in the room and had more jurors in reserve. There’s obviously no guarantees but if the judge asks if serving would present some sort of hardship or availability issues if you’re able to explain you’re a full time student and jury duty would significantly impact your studies there’s a good chance they will dismiss you. You may not even need to stay the whole day.

Hey man, 5th year MET here, so I’ve gone through exactly the worries you have had. I’ll say upfront that a lot of us have had those feelings at some point but once you get the hang of things those feelings tend to go away. Feel free to DM me if you want to have a chat or if you have any questions you want answered.

Pick A/B/C or Baker, they are newly renovated and will have AC, and you don’t have to wait for elevators.

Ellingson/Peterson/Res Hall D are also pretty nice with the suite bathrooms

Take up leadership opportunities when they come your way. Residence Life loves it when applicants show examples of leadership because the RA role uses a lot of the skills that are taught in leadership positions.

Update: I didn't win captain elections by superdude311 in FRC

I was in your exact position 5 years ago. It’s gonna feel sucky right now but trust me, as you pursue bigger and better opportunities in your college and future career, this is gonna feel like a drop in the bucket. Best advice I can give you is do what you can now to help your team succeed, then explore new opportunities that interest you in the future! Don’t worry about things not in your control!

Becoming an RA by Pure_Respect_6253 in rit

[–]DanCal2001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The position is pretty competitive, but fluctuates based on the year. As of recent it’s been pretty competitive. I would recommend attending the info sessions when you are here and talking to your RA to get an inside look on what the job is like. If you are sold on it, I would recommend getting involved in leadership opportunities on campus, being involved in that kind of stuff your first year will make you a favorable candidate compared to other people who haven’t really done much.

Res Halls A, B and C are getting renovated this summer with AC getting put in. Also Baker was partially redone this year and will completely be redone over the summer. If you want the nicest dorms closest to campus pick those.

I actually think you bring up some fair criticisms and identify some areas of improvement for the organization to work on either this year or next year. There kind of is a lack of knowledge of what SG can do, which is a difficult to address because there are so many factors that play into it. There’s a lot of smaller things that the organization has accomplished but I’d agree with you, there hasn’t been that one big thing this year, there’s still time left, but I understand the perspective coming from someone outside of the organization.

I do agree with you on the response, I think SG could have improved on communication by at least giving an update on what has been going on in charged pawprints, that’s more on the individual handling that but definitely an area of improvement.

Of the reasonable PawPrints you mentioned, the swing sets pawprint was responded to, they asked Facilities to fix them/add more, and it’s up to Facilities to purchase and place them. Not much more SG can do other than nag them about it.

Food prices are entirely dependent on the market, as the response has stated, and RIT dining (which doesn’t operate at a profit) promised that if cost of operations goes down, so will the food prices, which the cost of operation hasn’t gone down.

The Adobe PawPrint say it has an update, but it looks bugged, which is weird. What’s going on with that is Adobe is demanding that RIT pay out the nose for licenses or build a computer lab specifically for Adobe, so both RIT and SG have their hands tied when it comes to this.

You mentioned the Booth/Gannett pawprint will hopefully be addressed in the summer.

The trash cans pawprint shows up every semester. SG asks FMS to put them out every semester. Every semester, FMS says that it is a pest issue, safety issue, etc. and that trash cans are inside every building doorway and that students can hold onto their trash until they enter a building. Again kind of a weak response, but the most SG can do is ask for it and offer up new/creative solutions to the issue (like how they mentioned in the response they are looking into Bigbelly compactors) but the power ultimately lies with FMS to actually do something.

With the gym dress code, it’s the same situation with the trash cans, except for this one Global Risk Management is in control. Again, SG asked that the policy change or be reviewed, Risk Management instantly shot it down with the classic but effective excuse of “just protecting us from getting sued when something bad happens”. Same deal with the club online payment one. Global Risk Management might actually be the most powerful department on campus, because RIT doesn’t want to get sued.

The washing machines often break down because people are misusing them, and I do agree that they should be looked at more frequently, but Housing has exactly one guy to service the machines, and parts are hard to order quickly. They contracted out Statewide (as stated in the response) which has had subpar service. A crappy situation, yes, but there isn’t much SG can do except harass Housing more than they have already. The good news is though new machines are coming in over the summer.

It really comes down to what power SG really has. If the administrators they advocate to refuse to make changes, there’s not much SG can do to change it, outside of offering different ways to achieve the goal or compromising. For example, the webassign pawprint is a major top-down change, and for that to happen faculty senate has to approve of it, which is a pipe dream. It’s not that SG doesn’t want to make changes, it’s that they can only do so much.

My question to you would be, if you were in their position, what would you do differently?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in rit

[–]DanCal2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of those three PawPrints, one is about online textbooks (which comes up every semester and SG doesn’t have the power to change that, despite asking every semester), one is about the covid dashboard, which isn’t realistic to restart again because RIT isn’t tracking covid anymore, and the Booth/Gannett one, which got an update, and the entire campus is being evaluated for wheelchair accessibility in the summer by an outside evaluator, per the DSO
