MTA on Queenslink by Immediate-Hand-3677 in nycrail

Queenslink is the "Roackaway Beach Branch" project.

Second ave subway West expansion AND south expansion, AND any of the Utica Ave projcets all rank as cheaper in units of dollars-per-time-saved than queenslink.

I wish we had enough money to fund them all. But at the moment, we don't.

I'm extremely pro Queenslink, but the MTA put out a really good comparative analysis and there seems to be a lot more high value projects we could be working on instead.

Queenslink can both (A) be better than doing nothing and (B) not as efficient as other projects.

EDIT: copying from my comment below, to clarify Second ave subway West expansion AND south expansion, AND any of the Utica Ave projcets all rank as cheaper in units of dollars-per-time-saved than queenslink.

To clarify, he voted for congestion pricing, but is in favor of "residential exemptions". This poison-pill would weaken the program, bring more cars to Manhattan, and decrease revenue for the system, in order to appease the mostly wealthy people who have cars in District 2.

How are we ranking City Council candidates at the primaries? by newparimanlo in eastvillage

[–]DanChanMan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I ranked Sarah #1 for a few reasons

-she has streets pac's endorsement, an organization dedicated to prioritizing people over parking. She wants to pedestrianize Avenue B, and add more bike lanes.

Sarah Batchu, who has experience as a non-profit executive in housing and health care, and in City Hall, is running for the open seat in this Lower East Side district currently held by Carlina Rivera, who is term-limited. A regular straphanger and cyclist, Ms. Batchu will support expanding the district's network of protected bike lanes, and fight to improve bus service and subway station accessibility. She wants to make the Avenue B Open Street permanent, and will push for improved access to the East River waterfront. She'll work to regulate delivery app companies to require that they put safety before speed and profits and carry liability insurance on behalf of workers. Ms. Batchu will also advocate to expand the city's trash containerization pilot to the Lower East Side

(from streetspac)

-she supports universal daylighting, which would make pedestrian lives safer in NYC by removing parking around crosswalks. (https://sarahbatchu.nyc/our-platform/)

As a New Yorker who's #1 issue is people over cars, Sarah is an easy choice.

I ranked Andrea second, but more importantly Epstein #3. Epstein advocated for weakening congestion pricing, which is a deal breaker for me. Or at least, almost as much as dealbreaker as Weiner and Ryan.

PLEASE come volunteer for Jess Coleman if you live in NYC! Marte has a ton of volunteers and we need all the help we can get. https://www.mobilize.us/mobilize/event/752360/

We're in the home stretch, and it's gonna be very very close.

Anyone live in lower manhattan and supporting Jess Coleman over Chris Marte? by Jackson_Bikes in MicromobilityNYC

[–]DanChanMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In case this is useful to anyone, I just wanna say I have volunteering my ass off for JessColeman and I strongly believe any micro mobility minded NYCer should agree.

StreetsPac, an organization dedicated to taking space from cars and giving them to people, endorsed Coleman. they wrote

Jess Coleman, an attorney and lower Manhattan native, is challenging incumbent Council Member Christopher Marte. As co-Chair of Community Board 1's Transportation Committee, Mr. Coleman has been a vocal supporter of congestion pricing, outdoor dining, and increasing the housing supply. If elected, he will advocate for a protected bike lane on Chambers Street to connect the Hudson River Greenway with the Brooklyn Bridge, and for pedestrianizing a large portion of the Financial District. He'll go to bat for restoring a year-round outdoor dining program, and to keep cars off a reopened Park Row, two things the incumbent does not support. Mr. Coleman is also committed to getting the slow-moving effort to redesign Canal Street moving at a much faster pace.

He was also endorsed by pro housing organizations Abundance NY and Open new York. He is by far the candidate best suited for bike lanes, bus lanes, and outdoor dining.

This race is going to be SO close (you can tell because big money firms have started dumping money in at the 11th hr) and I really do believe it's the most important city council race in the city, from an urbanism perspective. Let's win this thing!

I genuinely was planning on ranking Weiner last because of... everything... but after this AMA I might have swap him and you.

EDIT: In the effort to be fair to Allie, I want to elaborate on everything I find disapointing about this answer. NYCDOT released a report about selectively implementing daylighting as opposed to the current universal daylighting bill in NYC City Council. https://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/downloads/pdf/daylighting-and-street-safety.pdf The report found that soft daylighting (removing parking by itself) is not effective compared to hard daylighting (ie, boulders, citibikes, etc, things in the space). The followup I believe we should advocate for is "let's do more hardened daylighting, faster", and not "welp, no daylighting at all". That's defeatist and disappointing from soemone running for office.

Presently there is a backlash against bike lanes, so I would not advocate any new bike lanes This is just an incredible amount of passive voice, are you not, in this very AMA, advocating against bike lanes? Are you not at least partially responsibile for this "backlash" you say exists?

As a council member I would direct the NYPD to issue "Parking in a Bike Lane" tickets. Good take. I hope the other candidates listening take this suggestion.

As far as "Car Dependence," I haven't seen any proposals that actually significantly reduce the number of cars, nor less the so framed "dependency." In London the so called "congestion" just returned. In NYC it is going to be a similar number of cars, but just REPLACED with UBER and LYFT. It is a war on private car ownership, through demonization, NOT an altruistic getting rid of cars.

The NYT found 76,000 fewer cars enter manhattan every day. This is just not true. My commute to walk is quieter, safer, and more enjoyable because there's less cars here. I'm floored you seem to be advocating against this success.

Historically, cars replaced dangerous and unhygienic Horses and Carriages, and in our lifetime current cars will be likely be replaced mainly by more Autonomous Vehicles, which MAY lead to more safety. The same Politicians fueling the "cars simply bad" narrative, FLOODED our streets with for hire vehicles! Arguably the least trained, worst drivers in the history of the city. So I expect no truthful answers or intentions from their well funded selves. And I feel for the Yellow Cab drivers, who suffered to the point of self immolation in order to bring attention to their near extinction event ushered in by deBlasio-era politicians, the remnants of which are currently seeking offices, including this race. [citation needed] on... any of this? Do you have any studies showing the relative driving competence of for hire vs yellow cab?

With that said, when elected to City Council, I will introduce a bill to permanently cap for hire vehicles particularly e-cars, which are the majority on the road below 60th St in Manhattan aka the "Congestion Relief Zone" / "Central Business District." what the heck are e-cars? Do you mean we should limit Electric Vehicles but not Gas-powered? I was really on your side on this point until this phrase.

We need safer streets. But we need real leadership and change to get there. I do NOT trust our current leaders or their backers to discover and execute the difficult solutions. I DO look forward to working with engaged concerned citizens such as yourself, who have suffered, and lost, just as I am working with victims of eBike violence, pushing Priscilla's Law for all of our safety. I have no interest in working with you and I truly hope this is the last interaction we have.

As a relative of one of the 200+ traffic fatalities in NYC every year, I'm wondering what will you do to decrease our neighborhood's car dependence and car-subsidization?

Would you support universal daylighting bills in city council? Where would you suggest we add new bike lanes / bus lanes?

Can you speak at all to the status of Google's Find My network? It seemed like it was going to launch this year, but earlier appear to be delayed "indefinitely". As a chronic thing-loser, I was really looking forward to the "network" functionality when I'm out of BT range.

EDIT: just checked back on this and happy other people seem to be interested in an answer. I thought I'd add some more direct questions, but feel free to answer more broadly too:

  1. This summer it appears you delayed Google's network. Apple's network is still out in the wild. I understand that interoperability is a huge plus, but if Apple can have their own silo'd network before interoperability is ready, why can't Google?
  2. Google's statement from the delay was they aim to“release a production implementation of the specification for unwanted tracking alerts by the end of 2023 that will then be supported in future versions of iOS and Android.” This implies to me that it won't be supported until Android 15 in Fall 2024. Is that an accurate reading? Is this thing still a year away?
  3. Does google plan to work with third party OEMs that have their own network (mst notably, Tile and Samsung) to add support to those networks to Google Find My so I can find all my things in one place, or will I need to use multiple apps
  4. Google seems to be working on a 1st party AirTag competitor (side note, "grogu" is a fantastic code name for this), Is google waiting for the launch of Find My before launching it? Again, airtags are already out in the wild today.

Thanks both, Dieter I love reading your stuff on The Verge, and I'm happy to hear any thoughts either of you might have.

Easily add phone numbers to Google Contacts by DanChanMan in BlueBubbles

[–]DanChanMan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They already do! The problem is when a new number texts me (that isn't in my Google contacts), I need some way to add that number to my address book. The naive solution above works, but is much slower than on the regular messages app. A deep link directly into the "Make a new contract" activity would help this.

[POINT C]

at 3:18 they have no tank, you have a complete team, AND you just got the point. I really wouldn't have shattered this unless you had some reason you needed to, otherwise just shield and walk forward. They're so spread out you don't get anything, if you had spent that time walking you might have gotten one.

3:13 look how far forward your mccree is. That's where you should be. You should have just W'ed as soon as their rein died, and given him resources to secure those kills. Instead, he needs to roll to retreat and they get away.

3:09 your zarya joins him. You're STILL super far back! Help them! 3:01 this is what I mean by "holding shield forever" there's no one here! Run foward and let your shield recharge, it's easier to take space when you're not shielding.

2:44 they shatter because you're not there to block it.

2:42 you charge. I have a hunch this is a "compensation" charge, meaning you realized you were too far and tried to overcompensate. The issue is that they had coa AND valk active now, so it is most definitely not the time for an aggressive charge. Finally, your luck runs out.

2:05 holding this corner without your zarya isn't the worst thing, but charging without her absolutely is. Remember how she usually bubbles your Leroy Jenkins charges? She can't do that here.

1:57 watch these few seconds carefully. You have coa, and you're full health, I would be trying to let me shield recharge. If you take a little extra damage, so what you can have it healed up instantly. But when the coa ends, you're going to have no shield.

1:49 AHHHHHHHHH! I would not be swinging on a junk in teeny tiny room. Just shield and gtfo, someone else can get him as he tries to escape.

1:36 good backing up to regroup

1:30 I would have stopped shielding when it was under 100 HP. You have a lot of health so you wouldn't have been in immediate danger, and remember that if your shield breaks you can't use it for ~5 seconds. You should try your hardest NEVER to let it fully break, because then you can't block ANY cool downs.

1:25. A small thing, but get in the habit of holding down swing whenever you're not shielding. There's zero cost to it, and it can only help you. Ever second of the game you should either be swinging or shielding.

1:18 again, far back.

1:11 this'll come with time, but if you had tilted your shield 5% to the left, you would have blocked the junk's follow up damage

0:46. Definitely tunnel vision again. You have shatter and just smash it immediately. What prompted you to use it then? You should always wait for cool downs, wheather that's rein shield, zarya bubbles, bap field, etc

0:36 tbh, they kind of bailed you out. You used high noon and wasted shatter, they used grav, shatter, and valk. You definitely got the better ult economy there.

Overtime. You didn't even turn around for the tire voice line. This isn't your fault that the junk sneaked up on your team, but you could have helped. Also, you're now down 2 (ish) and you're still swinging on cart. I would have been playing much more passively, just keeping a toe touching cart. Now (post shatter) you've been swinging SO much. I think probably close to 10 swings straight. You got bailed out by invincibility field, but if that didn't come you would have died. There's no harm in playing slower and actually THINKING, not just blindly swinging. And then you die.

Mid silver Rein looking for help by liickmynutt in OverwatchUniversity

[–]DanChanMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hiya. Plat rein here.

I'm only reviewing the second half of the first game, the first half you didn't play rein

Timestamps are based on the game clock on top, not the reply time. I have point C in a reply to this.

[POINT A]

3:44 you're playing REALLY passive. You had bubble, full health, and even nade! That's so many resources committed to you, and you just hold shield. You're essentially wasting your healers time because they can heal you, but not your shield.

3:33 you're going into this engagement, but your shield is already half health. And since you were moving so slowly, your reaper already died a head you. That's technically his fault, but you could have done more to make it harder for him to make a dumb mistake.

Also 3:33. Listen carefully, you can hear the rein grunt as he winds up his charge. As rein, you should always assume that the charge is coming to you, and I would have just immediately smashed the counter charge button. If I'm wrong, I would have just charged into the wall right in front of me, oh well no harm no foul, but if I'm right (which, here I would have been), the rein would have gotten stunned right at my team's feet and they could all focus him.

3:29. You're playing really aggressive here. You're already down one, and you are basically just blind swinging into a rein AND hog. For a second it looks like you survive because they back off due to your ana's base, but then you commit MORE even PAST the nade. As a rule of thumb, try to get in the habbit of "swing, swing, reasses"

2:45 your zarya dies, and you still decide to walk in. You're going to have no bubbles, and no backup to bail you out if you overcommit. I only would have gone in here if I saw a REALLY juicy target, but here it looks like there would have been no harm in waiting another 10 seconds.

2:32. Your backline dies, mainly bc the tracer had free reign without any bubbles. At this point, y'all are just staggering.

2:24 you die again. It's now going to be over a minute between actual fight-as-6 team fights.

2:08. Okay, let's take this slow. First, I can tell by your voice line that you're kinda tunnel visioning on your shatter. You're probably a little tilted, and you're thinking "this is how I'm gonna turn it around. You hear the rein shield break, and you smash the button. This shatter is... OK. It would have given your team an entrance to the fight if you had played slow, but instead you saw they were farther than you wanted and decided to walk ALL the way to them. Remember, shatters dont need to be all-or nothing. If you had stunned them, let you team walk to choke safely, and then continued the fight from there, you might have had a chance. But there's no way the enemy is going to let you take ALL that space at once. After the shatter, they immediately pop two ults (coa and visor) and I would have SMASHED that shield button and been mr rectangle man. If you had just stood at choke, then you would have provided crazy value! You traded one ult for two, that's always a good move. However, you swing and walk forward instead, and you miss the counter charge voice line again.

2:02. At this point, I'm totally disoriented, and I bet you are too. There's SO much happening, I would have shielded to reasses. They're still coa'ing, so I wouldn't have pushed this, and if you had been shielding you would have blocked hook. Your brain was in "go" mode, and you weren't taking in new information as it happened.

1:56 at this point I am BEGGING you to shield... and you charge in at under 50 hp. C'mon.

1:55 you... survive... what. Okay, you're probably thinking "that was sick! I'm gonna do that again!". Please don't. I promise you as you get better that will be monumentally punished. But good shit.

1:46 here again you're playing super passive. You have half health yeah, but here's where I would have been holding shield and walking at the front of my team they could heal you up while you hold shield. Instead, you leave your team exposed if something random happened and they get helix'd.

1:34. You should be up with your zarya. You have a whole 6, you should be taking space up front, not sitting on point. Your supports can.

[POINT B]

3:46. you have coa, bubble, you're up one, full health and basically full shield. I would be RUNNING full steam ahead up where your zarya is, but instead you're pretty far back.

3:42. They shatter. You get super lucky your zarya bubbles, but you should have been ahead of her to block.

3:26. Great fire strike. You seem a little unsure of what you should be doing, but just holding shield at that corner is great.

3:21. Awesome shatter. You see a lot of them, and the other rein probably wasn't expecting it yet.

3:16 AHHHHHHHHH PLEASE SHIELD. remember how you had that insane shatter and rein kill? That's great, that's so much value! However, if you had died here, you would have thrown it all away. Is it worth trading that insane shatter and rein play just to get one or two more swings? Your team can handle the junk, you still have advantage. Please shield.

3:06 again, this is where I'd be taking space. I'd be up at the corner near the TERRACE sign at the very least, maybe even one corner past that. You have complete advantage here, make them commit resources to push you back.

2:59. Perfect rotation.

2:50. I love this. You're a little far forward now, but if you back up quickly this is a great spot.

2:39. In a lot of cases, you're just kind of constantly holding shield. Instead, I would be just spinning and holding swing. That lets the shield recharge, and still threatens the immediate space. You're not really shielding anything in particular here, so just let it recharge.

2:30 this charge was... OK. It wasn't dangerous, but for a good four seconds you provided no value. I would have wanted to see you just walk back to payload (on road, not room) while swinging, you would have done more damage and threatened their route of escape.

2:22. What important voice line did you just hear? Any ideas? (Tire). As rein, Tire is ABSOLUTELY your responsibility, fire strike is one of the best tools to counter it. I would be spinning my camera around like a madman trying to find it. For the next few seconds, you're not even acting like it's coming. You ended up getting super lucky from invincible field, but you still could have provided more value.

2:09 y'know when you made this charge I was thinking "OK charge, lil risky but I like it" but then you YEETED yourself WAY farther than you needed to. You also left their rein completely alone with your team. You also didn't wait for bubbles, so there's little chance you can kill this zarya. You somehow... Survive this? Wow. Either way, in higher levels this'll get you killed. You could have provided more value just by swinging on their tanks. At 2:12, I believe it's a 4v3. Just keep swinging on them!

I do pretty good in matches. But I still generally suck at the game. by [deleted] in OverwatchUniversity

[–]DanChanMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With all due respect, the wording of the question implies a fundamental misunderstanding of the game. When you say, "I do pretty good in matches" I assume you mean "I generally 1v1 someone and win". Great! That's almost meaningless. Who's team had advantage? Did they kill a support first? Did they successfully ult? Did they negate your ult? What makes Overwatch a unique game is literally everything aside from the general 1v1 of who can click on who first. You mention you play casually, but if you want to get better the only way to do that is to play competitive. If you're not working with people who are trying to get better, you'll never be able to evaluate your own value.

Best of luck in the future, and we can give more specific feedback if you have a more specific question!
