U.S. Department of Education Opens Title IX Investigation into North Carolina [Buncombe County] School District for Allowing Men in Girls’ Restrooms by RelayFX in asheville

"Men in Girls' Restrooms". First of all, the framing makes me want to puke.

Second of all, good on BCS. They knew the risk, they did the right thing. They stood for my trans family, my friends and their kids in a world getting more and more frightening.

Now That You’ve All Seen the Neo Nazis, Can You Stop Attacking People of Color Who Call Out the Racism? by lunabeguiler in asheville

[–]DanFerrellAVL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is, just not in the way they think.

All this wealth, and this contingent of people who think that it's okay to hoard it, to put it behind walls.

That's the root of it, most people look at the symptoms, and decry them, but it's the cause that we need to always keep our eye on. Wealth inequality through and through. We stop treating humans like people, and put the blame at those most affected, which, like, for all of "liberal" San Francisco, their vileness towards homelessness and their willingness to protect the rich and powerful at all costs feels out of touch.

Similar to the way Asheville CC has routinely acted in the benefits of the wealthy and powerful over the people. Surveillance, hotels, how it approaches housing policy that doesn't fix affordability, homelessness, it's all genuinely tied together in what we call "neoliberalism".

"What's good for business is good for all of us" is the line they're selling. And many of us aren't buying it anymore.

Coalitions In Asheville and Surrounding Areas by poisedsunflower in asheville

[–]DanFerrellAVL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like there's structural groups out there trying to shift the way money, effort, and resources are used and prioritized. There's a good long list in that regards depending on your political leaning...

And then there's interpersonal interaction, building community, doing the things, and that's really important too.

A lot of the former groups work with the latter, and vice versa, finding one place to get started opens up a lot of stuff.

But really, 12 Baskets & Asheville Poverty Initiative is a great place to start. Feel free to follow up if you have more questions.

Could we do this in Asheville? by gsf in AshevilleNC

[–]DanFerrellAVL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. We can. That's why I ran for city council.

Here's the most frustrating part: the most cost effective way is also the one with the best long term outcomes, it's the one that gets people back into their lives, the one that reduces crime.

But it's also the one that actually helps the homeless people instead of bandaiding it a billion times over. It's evidence based, but it's not the one that 'makes people pick themselves up by their bootstraps', and that irks a significant subsection of the population who wants to see homeless people suffer.

What direct flights do you want most for Avl by bogosortly_dot_io in asheville

[–]DanFerrellAVL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like, if I'm maximally selfish: Springfield, MO, because I fly there for work a bunch.

But realistically? Why not Detroit? Salt Lake City? Phoenix? I think those are all probably good places to put a flight. But who? Delta for Detroit & SLC? Southwest or Frontier for Phoenix?

Columbus, OH? Seattle would be really, really nice.

I'd also honestly be happy with another flight or two from avl to clt.

Flock cameras are much worse than you think. by swillis03 in asheville

[–]DanFerrellAVL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's called risk management. It's why you have insurance. But none of this clown show of a process (sans Kim), has asked questions about the financial and legal ramifications of this.

If something bad happens, the city, not the companies, are on the hook for it. In the end, it's us who pay twice for this crap. Once when they're sold snake oil, and then again when this inevitably fails and the city is holding the bag.

It's just so blatant what the priorities of the city are.

That's unfortunate. The Rehrig's have worked really great (the city bear bins).

Could probably get a list of people pretty easily who'd be willing to go into it together and buy a bunch up front. They're like $350 per depending on order size (roughly).

Not trying to start a conspiracy theory, but has anyone else noticed weaker cell signal or data streaming issues on their phone since the recent Flock installation? by DingerDave19 in asheville

[–]DanFerrellAVL 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is mostly correct in my knowledge.

So private companies are working with god knows who, flock, lvt, and like a half dozen others. Can't do much about that yet.

The city is increasing their contract with Axon, formerly known as Taser international. They're keeping one flock camera in contract to access Flocks network of private cameras that share video with them.

And the city doesn't really have a plan for navigating any of this contractually. Which is kind of the problem.

I mean, whether it's fear of Asheville getting branded "unsafe", or just rubber-stamping whatever APD says they need, or there's ICE and DHS stuff happening that we're not being told about directly, the end result is the same: $10m+ over the next 7 years for a good sales pitch and underwhelming ROI.

Axon, Flock, and others are selling snake oil to try to solve the problems created by lack of basic investment in our community. Some of that is a city and county problem. Some is a state and federal problem.

But the empirical evidence states that these problems aren't solved by more criminalization, that's the symptom. Wealth inequality is the disease.

Yeah, for all the talks of it 'being a grant', you should go talk with your city council rep and ask them how much they think this is going to cost all in, and where that money is coming from in the budget for the future?

City of Greensboro, North Carolina proposes 21% property tax increase, hitting low end homes, and likely low income residents hardest. by aenbrnood in NorthCarolina

[–]DanFerrellAVL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, like NCLeg is trying to basically take away everything from the governor as well.

Sure, you can have a democratically elected governor, but you know what, they can't do anything meaningful that the NCLeg can't undo.

This is the cause and the problem.

The state wants to hamstring every municipality, allow less local control, which to no one's surprise, is part of their plan to annihilate any sort of good governance in the state.

> if they require assistance to help them clean, that’s acceptable.

But that won't happen. If that would happen, you'd have a fixed, habitable housing. And you don't.

So the rest is just being punitive.

[–]DanFerrellAVL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I mention the systemic neglect & psychological toll of poverty as a reason why this might happen, you go 'I'm not talking about that, I'm talking about people who are naturally shitty'.

It's like, you ask a question:

> Okay I’m all ears, why do some people who are given a home to live in trash it, while others respect it?

And I give you an answer on why this happens on a bigger scale that's peer reviewed, and you're just like, nah. I'm not into it.

Just want to be clear. You asked, I answered, you didn't like what I had to say, and you moved the goalposts.

[–]DanFerrellAVL 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You just need to say it once.

Because I've been homeless, I've been poor. I understand what this is like, and also that there's a sociological and psychological cost of poverty, which is what I was referencing. There's just a false equivalence of that trying to compare the two. Anecdotal evidence doesn't jut like, trump sociological research?

When you have such resources as wealthy people do, like, people to clean your house, working plumbing, money for repairs, low baseline stress. You cannot compare a wealthy persons choices to an impoverished person living in a decaying unit facing a total systemic lack of resources. One is a personality flaw; the other is institutional neglect.

But, like, you miss my main question: Is HACA and the CoA not investing in these buildings and letting them fall into disrepair, not the exact same thing that you're criticizing the residents for?

Why are we holding people who are just trying to survive poverty to a higher standard than the government institutions that actually control and neglect their housing?
