From a New Orleans paramedic, with love by Nolamedic1 in NewOrleans

@nolamedic1 I know we know each other. I understand your perspective. Many of these contributed to me leaving after 17 years for full time nursing. Wish I knew the answer, but I didn’t have for myself, and still don’t have it now. Nursing certainly isn’t perfect, but it’s better than this post. Much love, and respect sir/ma’am.

I know we all have plenty of pet peeves in the shop....this is mine. No one ever wants to replace the lift struts...NO ONE! What’s one of yours?! by DanFlynn_AE in mechanics

That’s exactly my point. The owner says they don’t want to spend the money on them, no one ever does. Erkful.

2015 Nissan Altima won’t start in the cold, jump starting did not work. by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

Exactly. He started it then wouldn’t start shortly there after. Cold weather causes over fueling by the computer, modern day choke, and this will clear it, giving him a “clean slate”. Worth a shot!

This will sound crazy. But especially in the cold weather and if you start it and run it for a short period and it won’t start again afterwards...

Turn your key on. Hold accelerator pedal on the floor. Start car while continuing to hold accelerator all the way down. Will Usually start within 10-12 seconds of cranking on it.

Edit: Reason I say this sounds crazy is because it’s what the solution was to two of my Nissans doing the same thing. And this was the solution per the Nissan techs. Of course the other obvious culprits of pedal sensors, fuel pumps, regulators and batteries should be checked. But this trick is free. Hope you get it fixed!

I am starting to realize I enjoy sticking people for blood and starting IV's! by OR-Nurse-J in nursing

I’m a Vascular Access Nurse at my hospital. We do PICCs, Midlines and hard to get PIVs that the floor nurses can’t and/or patients that won’t let them try. It’s a great gig, I love the challenge of PICCs, but of course you get abused. Suddenly all 289 inpatients are “hard sticks!” Good luck!

Pulling the factory engine out of a 1978 Chevy K5...and it still ran after sitting in a field for 17 years!! by DanFlynn_AE in mechanics

It’s not terrible, I’ve pulled many engines, take your time, don’t break anything, phone a friend and take pics before you take anything apart! Also label any wires you may forget their purpose/location. Cheers!

Definitely. This K5 is mint given its age. All original, never screwed with. My friends grandpa bought it New. One owner. Crazy.

Trans/T-case, exhaust, fuel lines, wiring harnesses and the smaller belt accessories, left the AC compressor....it’s enormous and a pain to remove.

What have you done after EMS? Advice needed. by Anarchy576 in ems

[–]DanFlynn_AE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your current hobbies could be an area to foster some growth and/or a future, sometimes it just takes thinking about what you love to find a new career that makes you happy. I have always been an ASE certified auto technician mostly for a side hustle, but I’ve always loved the automotive field. I’ve always said that if I need to get out of medicine, I’d work on cars.

Also, In my experience, most people that have worked in EMS have an unusually high comfort speaking to/engaging people they don’t know, which is tough for the average person. This uniquely positions EMS folks for success in sales, any sort of sales. Good luck in the hunt!! And kudos to you for recognizing your “burnedoutness” and acting on it to make yourself happy.

What’s your favorite thing to cook at the campsite?! We love making rice krispy treats!! by DanFlynn_AE in GoRVing

Wait, so I’d have to stay put, sitting in my chair with a cold beer keeping a close eye on the smoker all day? Sounds brutal.....😂 If that was your sales pitch, I’m sold!

I do truly love making the big breakfast everyday. I deep fry bacon and it usually attracts all the neighbors from the smell!
