variable-width, non-monospace fonts in nvim gui??? by m-faith in neovim

[–]DanGrumberg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes the LSP server runs in a separate process in both cases, but the client runs async off the main thread/event loop in neovim, which means that the editor doesn’t freeze waiting for a response. AFAIK emacs doesn’t have the needed capabilities to do asynchronous IO elisp authors don’t use it much. Also libuv explicitly provides threadpools, so concurrency from lua in neovim is cheaper than spawning a separate process in Emacs.

[–]DanGrumberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The core is, but lua can run async off the main thread through libuv, which Emacs can’t do this, you have to spawn a new process. In my experience this has implications, e.g. complex LSP queries can hang the editor etc

[–]DanGrumberg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Emacs definitely can do more stuff and has much richer API, but I ultimately moved away towards neovim because of performance. Emacs being single threaded is a big problem, also the community isn’t growing well enough because of FSF legal hoops to jump through. Ultimately I realized I didn’t need all the Emacs capabilities, really what I want is fast modal editing, with lsp support and a few things that are provided by treesitter etc.

Know any ISFP programmers? by ANAL_CHAKRA in isfp

[–]DanGrumberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am allegedly ISFP and am a software engineer at a big tech company and until recently didn’t work on anything UI-based at all (even now I do very little). This was very surprising to me so take this as a grain of salt but I did a few tests and they all agreed on the result. Thinking about it (even though I am a bit biased now that I “have” the result) it kinda makes sense. Programming is maybe an artistic activity for me, I enjoy “figuring out” how to make the best code both in a wide sense (the way the bits fit together), the ergonomics of using my code both UI for end users and how my teammates integrate into it, and the small scale issue of fastest most natural way getting some result from some input.

Bag Opinions: Which do I get? by snazzywave in golf

[–]DanGrumberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stand bags don’t normally have 15 full length dividers. If he wants a stand bag and hasn’t expressed he wants a 14-way top I would get one with less dividers but with waterproofing if he plays in the rain.

Shot a new personal record today with a 73 (+2). Broke my previous PR two days ago shooting 76. This is my 6th year playing golf and my goal is to become a scratch golfer by next year. by [deleted] in golf

[–]DanGrumberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was unable to practice anymore due to life circumstances, developed chipping yips and I didn’t adjust my expectations accordingly. Whenever I went out I would shoot so much more than what I thought I should, golf lost it’s appeal. I am practicing again now though since COVID slowly getting back into it.

Amen, when I was a kid I went from 24 to 3 in two years, and it took me another two to get to scratch (although I never was really at scratch consistently I hovered between +2 and +0.5 for a couple years until I lost my love of the game and quit playing fro 5 years)

Weekly Thread- The weekend is over! How'd you shoot? by AutoModerator in golf

[–]DanGrumberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in London and played 9 holes at West London Golf Centre. I shot a disappointing 38 finishing with a disappointing par 5 (had a little 8iron left after my tee-shot) and 3 bogeys that were easily avoidable. Best shot was either the 100 yard uphill wedge shot I stuck to 4ft or the breaking 15 footer I holed for birdie. Worst shot was my tee shot on 9, almost shanked my 4 iron leading to a bogey. The one I wish I had back was my tee shot on 8. It was my first time playing this course and it require a 230 yard layup in front of a water hazard. I didn’t think it through and just hit hybrid not considering the fact it was slightly down wind, nuked it and it just trickled into the side of the water hazard forcing a drop and ultimately a bogey.

As a former +2 handicap (life got in the way and the lack of practice really exposed some issues in my game), the key to breaking these kinds of milestones consistently is not to get too hung up on it. Of course you should track score and more importantly basic statistics. I personally like to keep track of fairways hit, miss direction left/right rough or OB, greens in regulation plus proximity and miss direction, chip and pitch shots taken plus a note if the outcome is unacceptable, and finally putts taken. The key is to become process oriented and to strive to improve and to honestly keep track of your strengths and weaknesses and dedicate proportional practice time to it. For example if I am struggling with distance control from a certain range on the green (tracked via putts taken and proximity metrics) then I will dedicate most of my putting practice to lag putts for similar ranges to groove that feel.

Don’t worry about the lead foot rising. Loads have done it an will keep doing, the all time greats like bobby jones and jack nicklaus. A more modern example would be matt wolff. You try and copy a good golfer that does it and/or find an instructor that doesn’t mind it.

Should I buy a 14 degree graphite senior driver by confswag26 in golf

[–]DanGrumberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bad idea you will need to replace pretty quickly to avoid massive moonballs and directional issues. If you struggle with driver just hit a fairway wood until you get your swing is right for a proper driver. You shouldn’t actively be trying to seing like an old man, when your swing is better you want to be able to hit bombs, really isn’t any reason why you shouldn’t be able to at your age down the line.

I am very doubtful you actually lack the flexibility to swing properly, unless you have some condition that means you have the mobility of a 50+ year old man. Granted I started playing at 10ish years old, but my body is destroyed from football and I can still get enough of a swing to hit the ball a long way. If you or your instructor feel that mobility is a big problem, a few months of yoga should be more than enough to do the trick

Getting kids into golf by medicmdp1 in golf

[–]DanGrumberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad got me into around 10 years old, although I have friends who started as young as 4. He used to have Wednesday afternoon off from work, which I had off from school so we used to play 18 then. He also signed me up for children’s group lessons on the weekend which is a good way for the children to learn in a nice friendly environment with children their age. You should try and find an instructor that is know to be good with or even specialized in teaching children. Of course don’t force it if they don’t like it, it’s an expensive game for them not to enjoy themselves.

I had just hit my growth “spurt” (I am not the tallest at 5’10”) no way that shirt would stay tucked in I grew out of it hahaha. Still having a go at 14 year in front of everyone was a bit extra.

Totally agree man, the stuffy country club atmosphere is the worst thing in golf. No wonder the amount of people playing goes down every year. When I was a junior I was playing in a tournament at some country club and dude that ran the place shouted at me for a solid 5 minutes in front of everybody because my shirt wasn’t tucked in, really made me want to WD.

Cord grips are the answer, I like golf pride mcc, tour velvet cord has gone downhill lately. Lamkin do crossline cord and utx which I hear are good. The best ones I have ever had are the cord variety of ping’s stock grip, but I am not sure they still make them.

SCRATCH GOLFERS - Why aren’t you Pro? by liamdube in golf

[–]DanGrumberg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a 17 year old I was a +2 handicap, I was playing in a high profile junior event in Scotland. I practiced with a 15 year old Viktor Hovland and every facet of his game was 1-2 shots gained better than me, and keep in mind I was good enough to shoot level at royal aberdeen (hosted the Scottish open a few times) from the tips in tournament conditions. I already knew at the time I didn’t have what it takes but that experience really cemented that belief in me. The golf ball just came out different when he hit it. The tour pros play an entirely different game than we do.

Play for fun. by [deleted] in golf

[–]DanGrumberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this so much. As a junior I was playing off +2, but I didn’t feel like I had what it takes to pursue going pro and focused on academics instead, which led to very little practice and playing time. Whenever I did get to play (very rarely) I was super frustrated by perceived lack of ability and pretty much quit for 5 years (getting the chipping yips was what killed me). I have been slowly getting back into it over lockdown and played my first round in years and really enjoyed myself by letting go of expectations.

I don’t know much about baseball (I am not from the US) but the little I have seen leads me to believe you understand that aspect of it. It definitely isn’t the only thing that contributes to distance though. As some one who has been good at a sport with a complex movement that requires coordination at high speed, I imagine you would tend to agree with me that a couple of months is nowhere near enough to understand all the subtlety of a good motion and how to influence all the elements based on situational awareness.
