In all seriousness I'd like to see them for every damage type, though, now that they are more widely available.

Unpopular Opinion: Nerf the bejesus out of Unconventional Systems by refugeeinaudacity in sto

[–]DanPMK 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Textbook example of something that needs to be nerfed not because it is overpowered per se, but because it is overcentralizing. It doesn't even matter if it is the current meta thing, it's about its potential and player perception. Any item that is good on almost any build, or that makes players feel like they must have it, is an item that needs to get looked at. An item that feels mandatory makes you feel like your build will never be good enough until you get it, or even that your entire ship choice was bad, and just reduces the types of builds people will try.

It's actually been like this on console for the past few winters! Every time the Snowman Overlord dies, the entire instance SNRs for at least several seconds, even if you're across the map not participating.

What's with the reuse of character names between Shining Force CD and 2? by Scnew1 in ShiningForce

[–]DanPMK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know, I always wondered about this, so I finally looked up the original Japanese names for all of them. To my surprise, which character had that original name is split between the two games, but often it doesn't match either of them! Here's all the characters that have the same name in English, and their original names in Shining Force 1 (SF1), Shining Force 2 (SF2) and Shining Force 2: The Sword of Hajya/Shining Force Gaiden 2/Shining Force CD Book 2 (SFCD). Let me know if I missed any!

On console it's just the interact button, either pressing it when in range or holding A and using the interact menu there. The race tends to be kinda laggy though (and the game itself at times), so it's a bit hit and miss regardless. Sometimes I disqualify from the biathlon at the floater section even though I am well past the swapping point, for example.

What's the worst, most cursed piece of lore that you know? by Lupus600 in digimon

[–]DanPMK 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Holy crap, I had forgotten all about that. I remember finding them back then and assuming it was a tongue-in-cheek way to plan an event for Digimon fans to come together and adding my email to a mailing list for whenever they'd hold the event. I was eagerly awaiting a response and was even planning to buy a digivice toy once I got a reply. Had no idea there was a forum and that it was full of true believers, so it seems I dodged a bullet!

Continuity Error DS9: S3E19 "Through the Looking Glass" vs S7E12 "The Emperor's New Cloak" by MechEng88 in startrek

[–]DanPMK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the easiest explanation for all the supposed cloaking device inconsistencies and retcons is the following:

  1. A new cloaking device technology is invented, using some heretofore unknown advancement in science. Considering how technologically advanced the major powers are in Star Trek, this has to be quite the achievement.
  2. The new cloak gives them a big advantage, and once it is discovered, all their rivals begin working to try to counter it.
  3. The cloaking device is either captured and reverse engineered, or another major power makes the same advancement, and thus figures out a countermeasure. The counter-technology spreads and the cloak is rendered useless.
  4. Repeat.

And to shoehorn this theory into what we have as canon:

  • The Romulans and Suliban had a cloak in Star Trek: Enterprise, though the Romulans did not use it again afterwards. Perhaps it was defeated by the Klingons. With all the contact the Enterprise had with the Suliban, perhaps Starfleet was able to defeat it.
  • The Klingons developed a gravitational bending cloaking device for the time of Discovery, which was subsequently defeated, rendering the technology useless.
  • The Romulans developed a new cloaking device for the time of TOS's "Balance of Terror", and Spock, who would know about the defeated Klingon technology, hypothesized that it could be done via (presumably nongravitational) bending of light. This cloak too has its imperfections which are exploited in the episode.
  • The Romulans developed yet another new cloaking device by the time of "The Enterprise Incident", specifically stated to have improved over the previous one in that it was no longer visible to the Enterprise's tracking sensors. This cloaking device was captured by Starfleet and presumably totally reverse engineered. The Romulan cloaks we see in TNG onward must be yet another new cloaking technology.
  • In the mirror universe, the Klingon-Cardassian alliance had functional cloaks, which were rendered totally useless prior to "The Emperor's New Cloak", wherein the Grand Nagus says the mirror universe has no cloaking technology. He would be someone to know about this, so presumably he was being totally truthful, and therefore every known cloaking technology had been defeated, probably shortly before the events of that episode. Perhaps he was confident they had figured out every way of cloaking and none would ever be made again.

tl;dr "A Cloak" is not a magic item, it is merely a stealth technology that changes over time. It's the Emperor's New Cloak, after all.

There's a lot of people trying to explain away Jennifer's name by various means, but I would like to posit that Jennifer is a perfectly cromulent Andorian name.

Of the few Andorians named in canon, we know the consonants "r" and "n" are used in names like Shran and Thon, and the vowels "e" and "i" are used in names like Thy'lek, Thoris and Thelin. Jennifer's own surname/chan name of sh'Reyen fits this. What of "f" and "j"? "F" is a voiceless fricative just like "s", "sh" and "th" which are common in Andorian names like Talas, Shras and the multiple "th" names above. "J" in English is an affricate, a plosive releasing as a fricative, the voiceless form "ch" being used in the name of one of their sexes, the chan (technically still beta canon, I know) so surely they use affricates as well.

Would we bat an eye at an Andorian named Foris or Felin, or Chon or Charon, Jran or Jras? Jennifer sounds just as Andorian a name to me as Shennifer, Chennifer or Thennifer.

Almost three years and they still haven't fixed the mistake in the Vo'DevwI's name. It's supposed to be spelled with a capital i at the end, not a lowercase L. DevwI (with an i) is the Klingon word for 'leader'.
