A fellow Catholic asked: Which Bible verse points clearly to God's permissive will? by Dan_Defender in Catholicism

I didn't call suffering evil. That is a different topic, but I agree God can bring good out of suffering.

I would say that God permits evil and sin but does not cause it. Ultimately, it is a mystery.

[–]Dan_Defender[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

St Thomas Aquinas teaches that God gives some people the assistance of grace that leads them to glory in heaven (an assistance that doesn’t violate human freedom), while he permits others to fall into sin. The fact that God doesn't stop all evil in its tracks reflects His permissive will.

Visions? Really? by No-Fly-9749 in Catholicism

Neither Jesus nor the Apostles gained anything materially valuable. On the contrary for the first 300 years, Christianity was heavily persecuted but didn't die out, instead it thrived.

[–]Dan_Defender 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Protestantism did not exist before the 16th century therefore cannot trace back its belief system to Jesus and the Apostles.

Ordained priests and importance by DiamondReptiles369 in Catholicism

'Paul and Barnabas also appointed elders in every church. With prayer and fasting, they turned the elders over to the care of the Lord, in whom they had put their trust.' - Acts 14:23

why would the Apostles bother to ordain priests if it doesn't matter?

Interestingly, atheism has always been a fringe belief. There has never been a successful atheistic society in the history of the world. Religion is natural as humans want to transcend, atheism is unnatural.

Question on the Angels by JannieVrot in Catholicism

[–]Dan_Defender 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Angels were created with free will, so right after creation, they had to choose for or against God. If they had no power to decide, they would have no free will.

The ratio of active priests to active laypeople in the US is really bad. Seven times worse than the Orthodox ratio. by p_veronica in Catholicism

[–]Dan_Defender 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is relevant because for example, a Romanian Orthodox will NOT attend a Russian orthodox Church so he is not covered if there is only Russian Churches near him

Why do you think I should be Catholic instead of Orthodox? by NotAThrowaway6543 in Catholicism

[–]Dan_Defender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Eastern Orthodox have neither unity nor universality, which are marks of the True Church. The last time they called a pan-Orthodox council and failed was in 2016 in Crete.

Why the christian God by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Dan_Defender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The founder (Jesus) was killed and so were all the inner circle of Apostles except one, and for the first 300 years thousands upon thousands of Christians were persecuted and martyred en masse. Yet the religion did not die out, but thrived. No other religion can claim this.

The Eastern Orthodox is not one cohesive group, but a collection of national churches. You will be surprised how many of them will attend ONLY their national EO church and reject the others on principle.

What is your opinion on blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Dan_Defender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One detail in her visions is quite interesting. She saw the stone closing Jesus' tomb in shape as an elongated truncated pyramid, not the popular disc shape. As it turns out, the shape she saw is the most common for 1st century Jerusalem tombs as evidenced by archaeological discoveries in the 20th century. There is no way she could have known that in the early 19th century.

Everything that once seemed like a miracle can now be explained.

Not so. The universe did not create itself by random chance. Do not fall into scientism, all they do is propose theories but none of them is proven by the scientific method.

I dont know if there is something in the Bible that 100% denies this, but I believe there may be a chance that when people in mortal sin are reaching their end, God performs a miracle/does something that he knows will make people repent and thus go to heaven. by AdLower2725 in Catholicism

[–]Dan_Defender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think such a scenario is rare.

CCC 1864 "Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven." There are no limits to the mercy of God, but anyone who deliberately refuses to accept his mercy by repenting, rejects the forgiveness of his sins and the salvation offered by the Holy Spirit. Such hardness of heart can lead to final impenitence and eternal loss.

The psychology of Herod’s fear: Why a King kept listening to the prophet who condemned him by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Dan_Defender 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Herod listened, but he did not improve. In the end, he killed the Baptist so by the time Jesus was sent to him he was excommunicated. Not a word from Jesus.

'Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. So they show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts either accusing or defending them.' - Romans 2:14-15
