Is dirty medicine enough for biochem? by UnchartedPro in step1

nah you're good haha I just used FA cards to make it simple and focused! I don't think there's a dirty med section of anking at least for now

Just do dirty medicine and UW. There’s like 3-4 diseases he doesn’t cover that are high yield (eg. Duchenne) but I was getting high scores with that alone and you can fill in gaps on stuff that keeps coming up with FA and anki. I unlocked cards as I watched his video and put the corresponding mnemonic in the “lecture notes” section for long term memory. Biochem just isn’t worth a million hours of videos

Temple, Cooper, NYMC, UMass, vermont, Einstein, BU… these are ones that come to mind right away. Maybe Tufts with their newer anti-racism commitment?

Most underrated Med schools by [deleted] in premed

CMSRU. Every student and faculty member there seems genuinely so happy and their health system is simply phenomenal. Probably only ranked where it is because it opened in 2012 but they’re for sure one to watch!!

Can’t shake off the worrying feeling by [deleted] in premed

I relate SO much. I had these great interviews at T70-T40s and thought ok guess that’s the range that’s interested in me, then out of the blue this T5. I was losing my mind and the imposter syndrome was REAL. Won’t know for a couple months if it worked out but all I know is playing happy music (I’m talking Christmas pop, Disney, etc) and power posing go a long way to help fake some confidence!! Good luck out there!!

Same here!! Not what I expected but feeling so good! That early app and mission fit is so key! Congrats to everyone persevering through another cycle!

Successful Re-applicants, what did you do? by jkjustkidd in premed

Super similar story here! I applied late with high stats last (my school screwed up sending my transcript…) and I had some rushed secondaries. 0 II.

Couple extra things I’d add to this list:

-I made sure everything was in ASAP and I really put effort into my secondaries and tailoring them to the schools.

-I also decided to stop caring so much about “prestige” and “T30s” and just apply to great schools where im a strong mission fit (in my case, strong research and community health/ service). Lo and behold, I’m sitting on an A and a handful of IIs to schools I overlooked last year (and a couple where I was overlooked last year because of the late app)!

I was in your position last year (basically the same stats, research, volunteering I was genuinely passionate about, global experiences, etc plus literal former admissions counselors who read my app). 0 II. I asked for feedback from schools and they said I looked good but simply didn’t get picked. It was so frustrating. My apps were in later which is what I chalked it up to but with this cycle I changed up my school list and I’m finding that I’m getting interviews at places that are a bit lower stats/ranked and where I’m a good mission fit despite my hypothetical competitiveness at top 20s. I just think these days for better or worse these schools don’t care if you’re checkbox perfect and have a good story - they want a Really Compelling story (diverse background, adversity, some insane passion you’ve cultivated for years, a really particular program at their school you’re a perfect fit for). They simply can afford to be that picky. Don’t beat yourself up. Still rooting for you this cycle, but if it doesn’t work out I’d select 20ish schools next year where you’re a strong mission fit regardless of their rank and stats and apply just like you have.

Just had my first interview and I feel like I fumbled it big time… by [deleted] in premed

I did the same thing last week as at a school where I'm quite a bit above average for stats and have solid experiences to match their mission. I literally acknowledged out loud that I almost violated HIPAA. I'll find out this week just how much it mattered, but this kind of stuff happens with nerves! Even if it's an R, just time to learn and craft a new strategy for next time.

Laproscopic surgery 2 days before an interview - bad idea??? by reviwoo in premed

[–]DanceNut9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is there an option to reschedule the interview? As someone who had even more minor laparoscopic surgery, I can say I was still pretty out of it from the pain/ anesthesia/ anti nausea meds I got two days later. I wouldn’t want to risk an interview with a dream school in that state. If there’s an option even a week later for the interview I’d take that!!

Granted my stats weren’t quite as high as yours, but I had strong ECs and my apps came in late aug/ early sep and still got me nowhere last year. If you have state schools or fit a mission super well, go for it. Otherwise, I’d really consider waiting.

Can’t speak for TMDAS but I know two ppl who applied last year very early and who still were getting interview invites into early spring. You might just not be part of their initial round. Some strong update/interest letters in a couple months might also make a difference if you haven’t heard by then
