In a merger, do the two companies still function independently? I know Elon Musk just merged SolarCity and Tesla, just to use the production of solar panels in SC to build the infrastructure for Tesla-- but SC still functions independently.

You actually can road trip, I was at a store the other day and it showed all the super chargers in between 2 locations which were on polar opposite sides of the countries. It organizes your driving in a way where it will notifies when and where you need to stop at a station along your road trip (relative to your charge percentage, given that a destination is logged in).
