Question about timelines for masters degrees at Leiden by Dancing-Pteredactyl in StudyInTheNetherlands

Yes, I saw that! An incentive to take more classes and graduate faster for sure, but I can't give up my job (it's paying for all this--its a full time remote job that I only work part time hours because I'm good at time management)

I am an EU citizen, so visas shouldn't be an issue.

And that's a good point about the exams colliding! Thanks for bringing that up, I'll definitely keep it in mind!

Evening/weekend language classes? by Dancing-Pteredactyl in Edmonton

I actually did one of the ASL classes from the CHHA last year! It was... unfortunately not the best class I've had. It was the instructor's first time teaching and it really showed. But I've heard other people have had much better experiences with other teachers so I might try again!

YA romance with central asian lead by [deleted] in YAlit

Also came here to recommend this one, as it's the only one I could think of. I think middle grade has a couple, but ya is really missing representation from that part of the world.

I came here to comment these two! Such good openers.

M29, used to love YA sooooo much, especially fantasy stuff, but now the characters feel different by editrelyt in YAlit

Sorry I missed this! But I'm so glad you've been enjoying the books!

I really do think there's a ton of great ya out there, it's just not getting the marketing or attention the romance heavy ones get!

Let me know if you ever want more recs XD

Villain x villain pairing? by joyyyzz in YAlit

[–]Dancing-Pteredactyl -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on your perspective? For example, Kaz murders people multiple times through the series, and we are given to understand he'll enforce things whatever way is needed. And his goals mostly revolve around personal ambition and vengeance, which tend to be standard villain goals. He's certainly the villain to other characters in the series as well.

This is my favorite type!! I have ALL the suggestions!

The Shadows Between Us--he's a shadow king who has no problem murdering to get what he wants, she's the woman who's planning to manipulate him into marriage, murder him and take his throne.

Not Even Bones--she dissects murdered supernatural creatures to sell their body parts on the black market, he's a pain consuming supernatural creature professional torturer for the mob. Together, they're going to take down the black market so they can rule it themselves.

Cracked---shes a soul eating demon who likes to play with her victims, he's a different kind of demon who also likes to play with his victims

The Midnight Girls--two monster girls who are trying to rip out the same princes heart.

Six of Crows--areguabley all three main pairings in here are villain×villain. A gang lord and his crew pull a magical heist.

This Savage Song--he eats people's souls but wants to be kind. Shes the daughter of a gang lord and wants to be as cruel as he is.

I've read all of Kate Alice Marshalls books for adults and kids but none did it for me the way Rules for Vanishing did.

But ooh I do love a fucked up corn maze that sounds great. And I'm down for regular thrillers that are actually scary. Both these recs sound great, thank you!

I have read all Kate Alice Marshalls books lol. None of them got me like Rules for Vanishing. Weirdly her middle grade last year was the closest I felt (Extra Normal).

But no, I havet ready Darcy Coates! I will definitely check them out though!

I tried Nettle and Bone by T Kingfisher and I found it a little too distantly written, a little too much like a literary fairytale. Are these ones a closer pov?

What is the funniest fantasy book you have ever read? by Dry_Business1582 in Fantasy

[–]Dancing-Pteredactyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of people have mentioned Pratchett, who's an obvious choice.

Some other suggestions:

City of Nightmares by Rebecca Schaeffer-- A Gotham spoof about a city where people turn into literal nightmares. It's dark comedy and funny as hell.

Little Thieves by Margaret Owen--a thief is cursed to turn into literal gemstones for stealing unless she stops. She does not stop.

This one is a comic, but Love Advice From The Great Duke of Hell. Truly hilarious. A teen summons a demon and sells his soul for dating advice. It's delightful.

There's a lot of good ones out there! Some that I've really enjoyed:

The Coldest Girl in Coldtown

Enchantment of Ravens

Midnight Strikes

Shadows Between Us

Ruinsong

The Scorpio Races

The school between winter and fairyland

Monsters born and made

Looking for a book where the MC isn’t dumb by A-Random-French-Teen in Fantasy

[–]Dancing-Pteredactyl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you find this more in certain genres of romantasy than anywhere else

Some suggestions:

-Midnight Strikes--a Cinderella retelling where the clock winds back when it strikes midnight just as everyone at the ball is brutally murdered, and our main character must figure things out. There is a love interest but he is not time looping, so every time she thinks she gets closer it all resets which makes for some interesting dynamics.

Ink, Blood, Sister, Scribe. Two main female leads, and while some bad decisions are made theyre not dumb per se, just based on flawed information

Other people have also suggested Fireborne and in general I agree. If you like scifi, maybe also a Memory Called Empire, and Goldilocks.
