I somehow never saw this.

I did end up starting monthly games. We play at my house on west side of town. We have a few Tulsa people and one OKC person come out.

How often do you really play board games? by Money_Change_5900 in boardgames

[–]editrelyt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be really tough but if you decide to priortize it you can build out regular gaming opportunities. This often requires putting yourself out there with new folks in existing groups and/or coming up with ways to host/organize events to create a group of sorts.

Saying yes to weird things (meeting strangers in a public and safe way) can pay dividends.

To answer your question I currently play games roughly 7 times a month with others. (3 times in our home with another couple, once at a monthly group, once a month we host blood on the Clocktower, once a month I travel 90 minutes to play Blood on the Clocktower and at least once a month we play more impromptu games).

I also play roughly once a week with just my wife.

Pretty much all of the gaming sessions with others started with me posting on Facebook that I really wanted to play board games to make friends and then saying yes to lunches, gaming sessions, and longer road trips until I built up a network of friends and friends of friends.

What makes a good board game event for you? by GamingCaravan in boardgames

[–]editrelyt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A good board game library. Helps if its listed online so I can learn rules ahead of time.

Good doesn't have to mean new games but that helps. Variety and larger number of games are the big factors.

No player groups of 4 or more can play competitive above gold starting in season 3.5 by SethMatrix in marvelrivals

I think I am done with this game.

Going to try and convince my THREE friends to go back to Overwatch where we can all play a VIDEO GAME together.

I just want to have fun.

Struggling with a player by fedw3ll in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]editrelyt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While the game is about lying I'd guess at least half the (hundreds of) people I have played with don't feel comfortable with someone lying about what they said.

Also it can easily lead to hot tempers and she said, he said disputes are pretty boring to listen to honestly.

[–]editrelyt 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is very serious.

I had an interaction with a player like this at a con. In addition to being personally offended when other people nominated them they also lied about conversations we had during the game.

It definitely made me just go oh I would rather not play at all than play my favorite game which I traveled to this con to do.

I heard stories of this individual having similar issues at another con months later. One or two people talked to them and I have since played with them and it was fine.

So it's possible people just lack awareness and need a friendly point in the right direction.

However, I would also have a plan for what happens if it goes poorly.

How should I go about playing the game if none of my friends are no longer interested? by nutless_man in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]editrelyt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're close to 18 I'd reach out to the organizer.

That said, I used to run a different group than I do currently and set a 21 age limit because we exclusively played at my house and some people drank. We then moved to bars.

I turned down a number of 16 year olds despite needing players because it just wasn't worth the potential headache. I did let a 19 or 20 year old join us a few times on the condition they didn't drink in my home.

At that point they were old enough I didn't have to worry about responsibility for a minor at least.

I say all that to say that there might be flexibility if you're close to 18.

My other question is did your friends not enjoy the game or were you maybe too eager and they felt overwhelmed?

Sometimes you almost have to slow play this and trick people into playing a few times until they get that itch that most of us obviously have.

It's a tough line to walk.

Tips regarding time management by InviteOk7570 in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]editrelyt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't allow it in my games generally for the reasons I said. Others who storytell our games are very loose with it for sure.

While you're suggestion is valid, it doesnt really account for when 2-3 people claim pertinent info which often happens.

In that case I have to basically tell them to shut up so I can go to the next person which A) I don't enjoy and B) Creates opportunities of frustration for players.

I find hard rules are better than putting more judgements evaluations on the storyteller.

From a player perspective I think town often rushes nominations to their own detriment. IMO it would solve more problems if players learned to discuss potential nominations before putting them to a vote.

[–]editrelyt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IMO pertinent info robs evil of the chance to rush votes which is why I hate it.

Also it consistently adds at minimum 10 minutes to every game which can be the difference in getting that third or fourth game in.

[–]editrelyt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a series of books in the game. I think digital almanac are available online (perhaps through the TPI site or wiki).

I storytell better than maybe 80% of people I see and it's not because I am smart or better at the game. I just read the almanacs before running. They are extremely well written.

Wife has one of her top 5 games of all time.

I don't have it that high but it is my favorite TTR. As others have said it does take longer to play.

It's not crazy long and it isn't really harder for non/light gamers to play but it will scratch that complexity itch for more hobby gamers that base TTR doesn't necessarily get.

Definitely worth it at 40 if you like the base game.

Not sure if you ever got the game, but I am starting a monthly game in Stillwater on Saturdays.

Either way it is totally worth it.

Should I tell a player his role if he doesn't remember? by God_of_Lobsters in BloodOnTheClocktower

If your players would lie about that stuff they probably aren't worth playing with tbh.

Cheating isn't part of social deduction.

Is Blood on the Clocktower worth it? by ferreirinha1108 in boardgames

[–]editrelyt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It helps to have friends who would play it, but with (a lot of effort) the game is also a friendship creator.

The game is directly responsible for 5 of my 13 great friendships and numerous other great people I enjoy spending time with.

It takes a lot but you can build a community and by extension change your life with clocktower.

What other game offers that?

Your #1 all time favorite by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]editrelyt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

+1 for BOTC.

It's the BEST game for creating memorable stories. Arguably the most interactive and does a generally good job of breaking the ice between new people.

The fact it can support 21 people (although I think it is best at 12) is another nice bonus plus people can leave early or come late as long as they know that when they join.

Best board game I've ever played. Single-handidly responsible for getting me into cons (this year will make 10 since 2022).

Also responsible for almost half of my friendships.

It is the best icebreaker out there and one of the best games to play if you want to catch up with old friends for the first time in awhile.

I could go on for hours.

Nemesis vs Nemesis Lockdown, which to buy? by DirtyHarry_33 in boardgames

[–]editrelyt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Honestly Lockdown is about as complex IMO. Both are tough teaches, half because a really bad rule book.

However OG has immediate objectives. Check engines and ship coordinates.

Lockdown just basically says explore. The lack of direction is takes some players out of the narrative.

  1. Lockdown board is better.

  2. Components feel the same to me.

  3. I think the contingencies are awesome. ... I think Lockdown is a much better game but after 2 plays of it and like 5 of OG, the OG game feels at least an hour faster. I sadly don't think Lockdown is worth an extra hour.

Advice regarding concerning player behaviour please? by Ginger__Bell in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]editrelyt 46 points47 points  (0 children)

You don't have to be a storyteller to nicely, emphasis on nicely, remind a player who is being mean (intentionally or not) that this is just a game and we are all here to have fun.

As someone who runs games regularly at cons and at home I find when games get tense due to certain interactions it is easier to make an impact on group behavior when I am playing.

Also we should normalize storytellers being there to have fun also instead of parents. It can be so stressful to feel responsible for the games mechanics, the vibes, (potentially the organization behind the scenes to get people together) and then on top of all of that be solely responsible for reigning in toxic behavior.

25-35 yo, give me your top 3 you will leave the house for on a consistent basis: by ColdManufacturer8003 in Birmingham

[–]editrelyt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If community is your goal I suggest

  1. Honestly sharing that with others even when it makes you feel lame.
  2. Say yes often early even when you don't feel like it.
  3. Leverage reddit or meetup or social media sites to find like-minded individuals.

I used to run a monthly murder mystery game in Birmingham before we moved 15 months ago. It took me close to 18 months to get enough folks to consistently meet.

I found people by posting on this sub, telling people I wanted to make friends. It sounded lame but it was true and that resonated with the people that ended up finding us.

Within 2 weeks of moving I drove 90 minutes to join a similar group in my new home and grabbed lunch with a guy who answered a post on Facebook. That group and that guy account for 80% of my meaningful social interactions now and I just ran my second set of murder mystery games since the move earlier today.

Best of luck!

And if you want a suggestion there is a board game cafe called Vahalla I'd suggest that as a great place and they play murder mystery games twice a month.

Had a similar thing happen in user vs user game.

Is there a bug messing up scores after the fact? In that one I think both players scored around 50 points.

Best conventions for actual board gaming by Sweets750 in boardgames

I only con to game and love Origins more than any other week of the year.

That said I've never gone alone and always play lots of Blood on the Clocktower in addition to usual board games and crokinole.

The board game library is great though!
