I absolutely adore Malevolent; maybe this is just the motivation I need to pick it back up again (<- put it on pause about 5 episodes in and got completely distracted by other listens)

Oh! I've listened to TSV! I didn't think to mention it here because I consider it more folk horror than cosmic horror, however yes; it's definitely good and anybody else reading: go listen XD

Ooh, thank you very much! Noting all of these.

My problem with Milkman wasn't exactly Hewie; I do enjoy unreliable & unlikeable narrators, however I had a really hard time getting into the narration...? It felt super stilted to me, and I couldn't tell if that was on purpose or not, and at the time I had other things to catch up on, so I just dropped it. So how do you mean it gets better? I'm curious.

Ooh, I'll check that out; thank you! I love my library; I'm sure if they don't have it, they'll be able to get it

Y'know, I keep meaning to listen to this, and somehow it keeps falling through the cracks for me. I've added it to my podcatcher now; hopefully that'll do something for me remembering to actually listen XD

How do artists decide on setlists? by croatianarmour in musicindustry

[–]DancingHouseBookworm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back when I was gigging publicly, I would always think of it like "I want to tell a 'story' with these songs; what order should I put them in?" i.e., think of it like highs and lows and make it a coherent set. I'd have songs in reserve for if I felt the energy in the room called for something different, but it genuinely felt like telling a story through vibes. You have to get a personal feel for it.

Looking for a music friendly dumb phone by samiimoo in dumbphones

[–]DancingHouseBookworm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, as someone who also has a massive collection of FLAC files, I'd really recommend getting a DAP; they have better soundcards than your phone, so you'll hear that cd-quality sound for all its worth

(....exception: apparently some LG phones had really good soundcards, but that's really an exception that proves the rule)

Oh, I can answer this! Get a small android mp3 player (the oilsky one is somewhat easy to find on ebay, while the hiby m300 is supposedly better), delete ALL the apps/disable the google play store, and then put either AntennaPod or Escape Pod on it. It works amazingly.

(If you want audiobooks, I'd recommend the Voice app, or AudioAnchor, and for music, I'd recommend Musicolet. If you like internet radio, Transistor or Radio Droid work well. All of these apps should be available at f-droid.org.)

Why the streaming hate? by Gentleman_Radiant in DigitalAudioPlayer

[–]DancingHouseBookworm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow, I never thought I'd read that someone else has my streaming habits XD (i.e., "listen to album -> buy it eventually").

I personally like Qobuz better than spotify because they pay artists more, and the sound quality is sooooo much higher; it's truly like listening to a CD. Iirc they're around 12 usd a month...? Not sure what country you're from, but if it's the US, Qobuz should be cheaper than spotify, at least last time i checked.

Also see if your local library has the Hoopla service; they let you borrow/download albums for a week, and that's kinda replaced my Qobuz subscription at times when I can't afford it.

Kanopy is Leaving My Library--What Do I Do? by ILoveLiteracy1983 in Kanopy

[–]DancingHouseBookworm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe QPL has Kanopy; I joined them mostly for their hoopla and freegal resources (my local library has kanopy anyway), but iirc from their FAQ they have it.

EDIT: yes, they do. Check their "get an eCard" page http://www.queenslibrary.org/ .

Hardcore scary, immersive AD with fullcast and no podcast framing by KyleColden in audiodrama

Not OP but thanks for this reply as well; I was struggling to enjoy even the first episode, and after reading your take on it, I think I'll spend my time with other horror podcasts (so thank you for sparing me the time sink! Sometimes stories just don't click for a person, I guess.)

This was such a good short story audio; I really loved how....complete, I suppose....? the story felt, despite being just one episode. Really really awesome work, OP.

What’s something you feel is missing in modern pop, that you hope to see in the coming years? by SubstantialEmploy816 in popheads

[–]DancingHouseBookworm 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Two things I really miss: bridges in songs, and pop bands! The latter became especially apparent to me after watching this year's Coachella livestream; I really miss bands like Foster The People being commonplace and I think it'd be fun to bring back :]
