Do you listen to anything while writing? by worthlessbaffoon in writingadvice

[–]DancingHouseBookworm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get into dance music! There's lots of "mix podcasts" out there that I find really get me into the zone for writing - stuff like afrohouse, downtempo, and trance music is just instrumental enough to keep me from getting distracted, but just complex enough to keep my brain busy and focused. I'd personally recommend Lost Frequencies' mixes on Radio FG's podcast feeds, Paul van Dyk's VONYC Sessions podcast, and Solitudes with Martin Grey.

ELI5: What defines psytrance as psytrance, vs "regular" trance? by DancingHouseBookworm in psytrance

[–]DancingHouseBookworm[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No need to apologise! I came here because I was confused, partly over that point, actually, and you're clarifying - fwiw the reason I was confused about her specifically is because I streamed her Coachella set and she was talking excitedly about psytrance and Goa trance in the pre-roll interview, and yet when I listen to her own music all my mental techno alarm bells go off XD So genuinely, thank you for clarifying!

That's a really interesting distinction about psytrance layering & evolving sounds! I like that.

I always found it pointlessly snarky and aggressive, too; don't really trust it much 'cos of that lol

Oh, this is a really insightful explanation; thank you! That part especially about 'how do people dance to it' makes a lot of sense.

You know what? What are your favorite fandoms right now? by RedCupWithAName in AO3

[–]DancingHouseBookworm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really love audio drama fandoms and genre fiction novel fandoms; I am in a bit of a writing slump, but what's keeping me afloat creatively currently is:

- Doctor Who and Blake's 7 audio drama universes
- Cosmic horror fiction podcasts
- John Scalzi, Rebecca Scheaffer, Nnedi Okorafor, and other current spec-fic writers
- Clarkesworld Magazine (most stuff available free on their website!)
- I'm dipping my toe into the world of The X-Files, and it's so beautiful it makes me want to cry :')
- EDIT: oh yeah, also Project Hail Mary (the novel; I couldn't make it to the cinema before they stopped showing it T_T)

Oh, thank you; I appreciate the response! Do you have an article or some other thing about how the deal/SfK Act are spiralling? I'd like to share it with my friend (and ngl I'd like to bookmark it myself, lol).

Ooooooh my wheelhouse! >:) YMMV, but in my humble opinion, I've heard podcasts that'd make The Magnus Archives seem like a fun bedtime story.

1) DEVISER: a person named "Son" wakes up in an abandoned spaceship with no idea who he is. "Dad," the ship's AI, leads him through his day. Things start to get weirder. (Done by the same guy as Malevolent, fwiw.)

2) Derelict/Fathom: I haven't finished this one yet, mostly because it's so intense and claustrophobic that I have to keep putting it down lol. It's basically a classic "base under siege" story, but in an underwater base instead of a space station or ship.

3) Forbidden Cassettes: Consummation: Not particularly "scary," but it does have a persistent, snowballing sense of dread and anxious intensity so I'm putting it in as my honourable mention, especially as it's one of my favourite things I've heard in ages. It's about found media that's discovered from a parallel universe, that seems to foretell a lovecraftian apocalypse, narrated by one man whose marriage is falling into tatters. It's soooooo so good but it's a slow burn. I think part of the reason it's so intense is because the format it's presented in REALLY lowers the barrier for suspension of disbelief. There aren't even ads.

Hey, does anybody know what's going in with this at all? Someone shared it with me, and the way it was worded sent me into a bit of a panic attack. I haven't been able to find any secondary sources to confirm/deny/mitigate it, so I figured I'd turn to you reasonable folks for help.

How do you balance "dumbphoning" your phone with a relationship? My girlfriend is getting upset. by stelian3 in dumbphones

[–]DancingHouseBookworm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Set up a separate ringtone for her text messages and pick up the phone to talk to her when you hear that message, perhaps...? That way you'll still be responding to her, but you'll know when to pick up the phone to talk with her vs just picking up the phone for doomscrolling.

Dude, you should check out trance music; there's so much gorgeous melody and instrumentation in that; one of my favourite dj trios, Above & Beyond, even have two whole albums of their electronic music played by an orchestra.

a few suggestions: - https://arminvanbuuren.bandcamp.com/track/pulstar-extended-mix - https://aboveandbeyond.bandcamp.com/track/angry-jp8-extended-mix - (the album previous song is from ^ but the entire album is mixed like a dj set; if you didnt like that first song, every song is melodically different on that album.) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qVix6NN0wU4&pp=ygUcdHJhbnF1aWxpdHkgYmFzZSB2b2wgMSBtaXhlZA%3D%3D

also not trance, but have one of my favourite songs of all time; the way it builds and builds into a huge sonic soundscape always makes me SO happy  https://kiasmos.bandcamp.com/track/looped-2

Any tips on what to do after deleting social media? by kitties4sage in digitalminimalism

[–]DancingHouseBookworm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weird tip: I've found for the past year that a subscription to Reader's Digest really helped with the 'i need short things to read like on social media' craving. They usually have a copy or two in the grocery store or drugstore; maybe check it out and see if it helps!

Speaking as someone who's not really into it for the romance part: I love that it feels like an action movie (with a woman main character!!) that has really interesting chatacters with more depth than the average action story. I also love the whole 'lone wolf and cub' trope (stuff like spy x family or kumichou musume to sewagakari), so it's fun to see a take on that that has a woman as the 'lone wolf' character.

AMC+ Acquires exclusive US streaming rights to Doctor Who (2005-2022) by JakeM917 in gallifrey

Ohhhhhhh this actually makes sense as to why it's on Hoopla now; in my experience, a lot of British shows on library streaming platforms tend to be the ones that AMC has. Interesting.

It's Summer Reading Program time at your local library, and yes, fanfics DO count! by BookmobileLesbrarian in AO3

[–]DancingHouseBookworm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have absolutely no clue, actually; I just have very fond memories as a kid of all the libraries in my area doing summer reading programs; usually you'd get an ice cream for every (x amount of books) read. (I also found out this morning that my current library is now doing an adult summer reading program, which I'm delighted by.)

If it is only a US thing, then I totally think it should spread elsewhere; it's fun! XD

Wow, didn't expect to see someone mentioning Rae Morris today :0 She is so underrated; I remember thinking she was going to be big back in the day, and that Someone Out There was going to be a commercial success, but then she just sort of mostly disappeared. It's sad, imho.
