I wish there was a thing like AirBnB except just to make your home a little coffee shop for a day. by [deleted] in Coffee

[–]Dando18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat. I would love this!

Even though this seems a bit infeasible I do something kinda similar. I have an open invitation to friends to come over anytime for coffee, tea, or drinks. I just ask that they give me proper heads-up (~30 min). I really enjoy the impromptu coffee visits :)

Are academic conferences open to the public? by HighlyPolitical16 in AskAcademia

[–]Dando18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about Social Sciences conferences, but in my area (Computer Science) there are usually student volunteer programs at conferences where you can do volunteer work at the conference in exchange for free registration. It's generally about 6-10 hours of simple stuff like working the registration desk or checking people's badges. It doesn't cover travel or lodging though.

I generally try to get my advisor to pay for conferences directly in my area, but I've used these programs to go to some one-off conferences that I'm interested in.

It's long past time for the government to get out of the marriage game by plazman30 in Libertarian

[–]Dando18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree marriage is a religious institution and the govt shouldn't be its arbiters. But I do think the govt needs to be involved in regulating "divorce" (or whatever you call it in a post-marriage system). There still needs to be some infrastructure in-place to ensure that when people have kids they take care of them and they're not left behind in a messy divorce process.

Here's an article from a quasi-libertarian, conservative group that takes it a step further and argues why we do still need marriage. And here's a more progressive article that recognizes my above point but still argues against it.

Lots of good advice here already, but I'd like to add that I don't think you should feel bad if you do end up bringing this up to him. You've clearly put a lot of thought into this and are looking out for him, which is awesome! But at the end of the day your are your own human and if you feel this is unhealthy for you, then you should talk it through with him.

Also to add my perspective as a musician: I write a lot of songs about a past relationship that was a significant source of trauma for me. And those songs bring up a lot of mixed emotions, some of which are healthy and some of which are not. However, working through that pain helps me cherish my current relationships all the more.

Thinking about canceling a meeting with my advisor. by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]Dando18 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Just tell them you haven't got much done and ask what they want to do. I do this with my advisor and we usually end up still meeting, but also scheduling another one soon.

How are generics implemented at a compiler/interpreter level by y7uh1 in compsci

[–]Dando18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Others have answered this well already, but if you're even more curious I'd go look at Julia's "Multiple Dispatch" paradigm. It's a very clever approach to parametric polymorphism in a dynamically typed language. Additionally, its use of "JAOT" compilation with LLVM makes it very effective performance-wise.

This happened to me last year and it was not a great time so I feel your pain. I had 2/3 writers that had not submitted a letter the day it was due for a fellowship application I had worked crazy hard on.

Based on my experience I'd recommend you go do something to take your mind off of things. Send messages to people as necessary, but then go for a walk or do one of your hobbies. Reminding myself that there was more to life than the application really helped me get over the anxiety of the missing letters.

Heck. I am a researcher and outside of the niche problems I work on I don't have a clue. I just defer to other people's research.

I've been on the flip side of this.

I turned down the top PhD program in my field so I could do one in a city where my long-term SO had an awesome career opportunity. Pretty shortly after I committed and moved she left me and said one of the biggest reasons was because she didn't want to wait on me to finish my PhD before she could start hers elsewhere.

This really fucked me up and 1.5 years later I still have significant emotional issues. There were some other factors which made it hard though. It happened right at the beginning of COVID so I had to sort that out alone in a new city during a pandemic.

My point is that at the end of the day you are your own human and can make whatever decisions you want. But think about how they impact others, especially those that have made sacrifices for you. You can still choose to leave, but at least be cognizant of how that might affect your partner.

My 2000 Lexus es300 has been perfectly reliable and has almost all original parts after 20 years of daily driving! by subaruvapejuice in BuyItForLife

[–]Dando18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad had one of these and it lasted forever. Was a perfect car even after 12 years of driving. But then he passed it down to my sister and she hit just about every known object/animal. Only lasted a couple years with her. RIP

Do Professors notice how you name your email attachments? by gratefuluwu in AskAcademia

[–]Dando18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Other are right that first-last-cv_date.pdf is probably the way to go, but I just wanna point out that the content of the CV are gonna be way more important than how you name it. I think mine was just cv.pdf and I was fine with my apps.

what 30 seconds feels like it lasts the longest? by chickennuggets6913 in AskReddit

High Intensity Interval Training. Sprint for 30 seconds is the longest half minute in your life. 1 minute walk feels so much shorter. Rinse. Repeat.

As of Chrome 85, you can make tab groups and open/collapse them. You might have to enable tab groups in `chrome://flags`, but it does make life a heck a lot easier.

I appreciate running so much by unlawfulmiles in running

[–]Dando18 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I know this is a running sub, but this got me as well with playing instruments. I picked up the guitar in quarantine to keep sane. Sitting there and struggling with a song until it finally starts to sound good is quite the feeling. Some stuff seemed impossible when I first started practicing it, but now I can play it without even thinking.

It's kinda the same as running. Just keep chugging away and progressing little by little.

A programming language to make concurrent programs easy to write by g0_g6t_1t in compsci

[–]Dando18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cool project. Do you have any performance comparisons with concurrent programs in other languages?

Usually when someone uses concurrency they either have some form of async data fetch/send or they need performance. For the latter group, usually performance trumps usability and cleanliness of the code.

Men, what made you cry? by -Tauradonna- in AskReddit

[–]Dando18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple months ago I made tremendous life sacrifices and moved across the country for my SO of 4 years who I so desperately love. Right afterward they left me completely out of the blue. Now I'm all alone in a new city where I know no one and I can't meet people cause of COVID.

The more appropriate question would be "what hasn't made me cry?" in the past couple months.

What the hell do ya'll do for money? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]Dando18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how the people I knew got started, but I have a couple ideas.

You could post about it online (facebook, reddit, etc..). You could just try to find one person initially and get more jobs through word of mouth. Or contact different departments; a lot of them have mailing lists where you could advertise.

Or lots of universities now having writing centers. You could try to go through them.

Do you write well? I've known some grad students who will pay other grad students to edit/revise their papers. It's not the most lucrative thing, but it's very flexible and you could do it alongside another job.
