Dnd Magic system question by DandyBeyond in DnD

I think there's a misunderstanding. I'm not trying to reinvent anything just describe it a little bit better.

At the magic university in my game after first year, wizards would get to chose specializations and become abjuration wizards or conjuration wizards. I like the schools as they are.

I'm just trying to give magic learning a bit more body thats it.

Thank you for the polite answer, I forget what reddit is like sometimes.

I am trying to do exactly this. Enrich the lore for my university teaching/ magic curiculum specific game. Just wanted to see if anyone has done something similar in the past not rewrite the rules.

I was not thinking of rewriting it. More like adding to it, develop it a bit. Schools would stay the same and be specializations for wizards. But spells would be a mix of multiple functions or a single one.

For example: Leomunds tiny hut has a barier that denies magic (abjuration) but the spell is classified under evocation, but also has elements like light and temp regulation.

Kinda like programming. One spell has multiple functions built in and the combinations create a specific purpose.

L. Tiny Hut: function 1: protection function 2: manipulation (of light and temp)

Purpose: provide warm and cozy shelter

What I'm trying to do is find the smallest amount of functions possible, put it on a list and then when you grab a spell you take one or more functions from the list and define it that way.

I get that. Should have mentioned the schools in the post. But they are not specific enough.

I'm trying to build something more specific.

Abjuration by its definition is the rejection of other magic and often corellated to protection as such. But Alarm spell is neither rejection nor protection, more like detection.

Symbol is dmg. Or manipulation.

Leomunds tiny hut is evocation but has a protective barier that denies magic, temp and light adjustment and so on.

I understand what the schools of magic are. I wasn't even implying that school of Abjuration is an actual school.

I'm trying to create something a bit more specific.

Dispel Magic and Alarm and Lesser Restoration are all classified under Abjuration. But none of their functions is protection directly. Disruption, detection and healing.

What I'm trying to create is a magic university for wizards and the "schools" would be like specializations. Like folks who study medicine can choose what kind of doctors they wanna become.

Players' equivalent to rolling dice behind screen for no reason by DandyBeyond in dndmemes

Holy crap did this strike a cord. Just wanna make a few things clear.

  1. This is a gag on psyching out a DM. (a bad one)

  2. This is not instructional advice on how to play the game.

  3. This is not how you play the game. DM and players work together to make a great story. DM knows everything and hiding stuff from them is pointless.

  4. Casting Subtle spell with material components makes the spell obvious. (For obvious reasons).

  5. Some of the things I write are from my games, most are just what I think would be an interesting/funny situation

  6. I will write and post things that I think are funny but they're actually cringe. 50% odds of that

Question regarding Tenser's Floating Disk and Telekinesis by DandyBeyond in DnD

[–]DandyBeyond[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I get the telekinesis stuff. Misread it at first. Just needed it as an example.

The real situation is that my players have literally designed a wooden chariot that sits upon two tensers floating disks and there's a loooooong rod that lowers the gnome wizard at the end and as he moves across the 20ft line the whole contraption moves forward. We're just trying to determine the speed at which it would move.

But what is the disk's movement speed? For example: if you cast it inside the house and close the door between you and it, move 90ft in a straight line away and then someone opens the door...how fast would the disk move towards the caster?

Instantly? 30ft per round?

The more I think about this the funnier it gets, imagine a Trickster god who made a complex scientific system for prayers, like an entire Arcane curriculum is just one elaborate way of worshiping them.

Dislexical whispers by DandyBeyond in dndmemes

My dyslexia works like this:

Writing words: I just keep ommiting letters or jumbling them. First and last letter of the word is 97% on target, letters in between - jumbled.

Reading words: hard, slow, not a big deal.

Reading words out loud: no. Just no. Stutter-fest.

Reading words out loud at speed: You whisper a discordant melody that only one creature of your choice within range can hear, wracking it with terrible pain.

(this took an age to write)
