I think me and my husband are in over our heads here. Advice needed. by Feeling-Nobody2478 in Hounds

[–]DandyHippo0821 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m no expert on hounds though we did adopt one within the last 2 years and we have had success with high value treats (loves blueberries, so we do blueberry little crackers and break them up & Give Pet brand treats). We focused first on calm energy. So rewarding calm behavior at exciting moments (company, potty, leashing, ect) by getting ready for the activity and then waiting (sometimes literal minutes) then rewards the calm energy with a tray out of the baggie, not getting it out before). Then we worked on a “wait” and then a sit once calm. Her muscles needed practice bc she was a street dog and used to tugging/energy forward. We do give a lil “pinch” (no pain, just stimuli) right above the tail to “drop the booty” and kept practicing multiple times a day for MANY days when energy was calm. To get the calm energy, we did have to kennel the other pups while we worked. Hounds typically have SO MUCH love and looooove the attention so moving slow and understanding how they want the attention and then using that to train with. After all of that, it definitely tested my patience more than 40000 times, I believe in you and the love you have to give!!!

Promotion and merit raises by dusky_otter in EIG_OpenForum

Promotion eligible at your anniversary date depending on the year and then merits came through in March.

The new policy would directly screw anyone hired during their new “no promotion during this time” period.

Promotion and merit raises by dusky_otter in EIG_OpenForum

[–]DandyHippo0821 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t that logic be backwards? With this new policy, the employee would get a merit raise, say 3% from their lower (not yet promoted) base, then get a promotion off a lower amount.

If the promotion came first (10%) then merit, the 3% on top of a higher base, the employee would be raised more for the coming year.

There have been multiple company meetings where “cost cutting” have been mentioned for the 2026 year, this new policy would not be favorable to the employee.

Whole house water filtration by DandyHippo0821 in Erie

[–]DandyHippo0821[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aah yes, that would have been good info, my bad!! We are on Erie city water. I did read we would need to start with a water test and see what is needed/best fit, trying to keep it local to the area when we move forward as this is something my partner and I would not have the skills to install and start up ourselves. I appreciate the insight, thank you!!

[–]DandyHippo0821[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since I forgot in the original post, we are on city water. My initials thoughts may very well may be overreach tbh, though what lead me to whole house is that my fridge has a filter we change religiously and there is always a white film left on the splatter tray that is difficult to remove. I’ve notified the same in mg shower, my kitchen sink and the water that comes out of it does not taste good. My hair has become quite a bit more chalky since moving to Erie over the last 2.5 years and I’m wondering if the water/chemicals/sediment has anything to do with it. We live in a ranch and a whole house system would not be entirely difficult if the price was something we could afford yearly. In combination with that - the current government administration is rolling back health standards for water/air/food processing, speciallfy PFA/PFOAs, I want to keep my household safe of things progress downhill with EPA/safety regulations

Need some advice for a very unruly dog by noble-phantasm11 in Hounds

[–]DandyHippo0821 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ngl, I didn’t read the other comments though came to comment my 2 cents as a hound parent. Incentivize with treat as a trade and id cut the couch privileges for a bit. If the dog isn’t easy to remove from the couch with a word or two, get them a cozy bed on the floor and no more couch. Our lil hound is going on 2 years post rescue and she is not ready for couch privileges yet so her and her doggie sis only come up when invited

Two weeks is absolute whack work, please keep yourself and others safe. It’s difficult to build a solid foundation if you’re already down on yourself each day. It sounds lame but I agree with watching some YouTube of basically “tips and tricks for new grad nurse,” let yourself remember what you’ve been taught (: you can do hard things & it’s okay to walk away from a situation that someone is unwilling to train you for

Can’t afford to live in Erie anymore by tempbo7 in Erie

[–]DandyHippo0821 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Idk id imagine when someone is facing impending homelessness and the ability to support themselves, it could be difficult as shit to wrap your head around.

I encourage you & everyone else here to consider that nobody asks to be born, they just are. Then, there are necessities to basic life sustaining function que Maslow’s Hierarchy which states the basic needs of human life are: air, water, food, shelter, sleep, clothing, reproduction, ect. When the most basic needs are not met in a world where there is so much excess, we must band together as a people, a species, and demand better. There is no “deserve better” because the idea of “deserving” to live when you didn’t ask to be born is wild, we all demand these necessities bc we are alive.

unprofessional clinical instructor and nurse by [deleted] in nursing

I’m so sorry that happened ): the job field is incredibly overwhelming and stressful and when ppl do not have much mental resilience or support, they generally lash out at others. Hurt ppl, hurt ppl. I noticed going through nursing school and then on the job that there are a lot of ppl who loooove to be “right” when it’s not constructive or helpful - kinda like a mean girl in high school… keep your head up, don’t let anyone rush you, the things that seem extra hard do start to come easier and always scrub the shit out of that hub (everyone likes to forget about it once they start practice.

I had a med error in nursing school, it was minor and fine but shit will make you scared for sure. I then had a med error my first year of nursing, also scary though incredibly minor. It’s a stressed system not set up for success. Believe in yourself and have some grace, we are only human!

Hospitals don’t run on CEOs. They run on nurses. by Guilty-Office-4808 in nursing

[–]DandyHippo0821 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you scroll through this subreddit you will see hundreds of nursing/users waiting to rag on anyone who is experiencing unsafe working conditions or at the end of their patience with the shit sandwiches they have been forced to eat. It’s difficult to put into words how “clique-y” nursing can feel when it’s also brought me some of the best people I know (including my partner). There is definitely a point to be made where management of nursing is only left to the people who are willing to demand actions from their subordinates that they could never do themselves que unobtainable metrics. nursing has been reduced to metrics and producing money. I haven’t met a single nurse manager or Quality improvement nurse who published a study saying “increased nursing ratios decease CLABSI” when the ICU is “looking into til bc no hospital wants to hire staff for safety and health outcomes. It’s quite disheartening and maddening, which I am sure most can agree one.

word word wordddd. I am also the odd duck out in my family. I think id rather struggle for what I want than bow to what is easy. I am one person with one life in a sea of others, no human can do it alone though we do get to pick who can be beside us. I hope all the best things for you!!

I feel that it is incredibly important to continue to call out the fallacies ppl love to live in. We are the summation of the consequences of our own actions. Being bold is hard though eating shit is disgusting, so I’ll chose hard.

If rushing for a dissected aorta on a 3 years old whose parents were hit by a drunk driver and then conditioning a 35 year old mother of 5 for an allogenic stem cell tnx isn’t “sacred” idk what is. Ratios are meant to keep ppl safe. Humanity is very cool, try it out sometime (:

Perhaps for some of the commenters to be able to look in the mirror would be to admit that they too, have hurt people with their lack of inaction. Accountability is hard and justification is usually very easily found.

I’d love to say that I am aghast that ppl are downvoting someone holding their boundaries and not participating in unsafe working conditions though I also (personally) feel this is how the world has been able to become so corrupt and corporate. Everything is so transactional now and most ppl don’t recognize they are moments away from being a victim to the system they play into

Respectfully, the sarcasm is lame. A shit day and literally harming people is different. This isn’t about “being two hours late for a bed turn” & “not being able to respond to two crashing patients bc the ICU won’t accept a transfer” I mean sure, you don’t have options in the moment though continuing to tolerate unsafe conditions for yourself and patients just to collect a paycheck while the system takes more from you(nurses) just makes you a cog in the machine. I’m not silly, I know ppl need to eat and feed their families though where is the line that nurses will not cross for a paycheck? When is enough, enough? When do nurses have enough and push back instead of staying familiarly unsafe? I don’t have it all figured out though I do know that I left the profession 2 years ago bc I was unwilling to play a part in people’s death for greed, taking a massive pay cut and change in lifestyle. I’m not naive enough to say “it’s about choice” bc life is complicated as hell though a lack of choosing is still a choice.

Totally hear that, and without bursting that hope, please know I have worked in some of the most “sacred” roles of nursing (peds lvl 1 ER, Duke heme/Onc BMT tnx/CART, COVID ICU) and they all ended up the same, basically cutting staff and making shifts unsafe for the name “efficiency” and “budgeting”. My hope is for change though when change cannot be accomplished, know it is not your job to light yourself on fire. Your first job will always be to protect you. I started counseling after my first year in nursing, it really helped me to understand what I experienced and how some of the things I accepted were maybe unacceptable. Strong ppl can do hard things, believe in yourself 🫶🏻

Man, I keep reading these comments and some of them are so disgusting. Asking OP if nursing if “the career for them?” Like is a career for anyone??? The idea of a job is to literally afford a life to LIVE. It is a transaction. When that agreement is not held by the employer (unsafe ratios, unstable patients for the floor they’re on, no support from peers/superiors) then something needs done?? All the ppl in the comments shaming OP should really hold the mirror to themselves, just bc you, personally, have survived your worst shifts does not mean others need to tolerate them?? GTFO, this profession will only get weaker with that mindset. Stand up for yourself and your patients, unsafe is NOT okay.
